I have 2 bags of the stuff I just mixed for my latest batch to go under my LEDs. I want to research this because I will not support monsanto in any way. I never liked FFOF either way BUT they had a deal on the bags at the local hydro shop a buddy runs SO I ended up with a few.

Make your own soil

I need to listen to my own advice

There was no need to ressurect a dead thread almost a year old to restate that this was a rumor. The last post from 2012 even says it.

FF stuff is crap though, make your own and avoid the problems.

sorry to resurrect again but haven't had a problem with my Fox Farm ocean forest no bugs. have any of you ever stop to think that maybe its where your local store is actually keeping their stock?

I've been to a few out of state hydro stores that actually keep it out back in the open.

also their labels on the bag that say which states they're shipped to,maybe that has something to do with it.

My problem with FF was the overall level of quality and the fact that I don't want to have to sift large matter out of my bagged soil.

never had bugs with FF and ive used it for years...and its never 20 a bag usually get them for around 8-9 bucks when you buy a whole pallet. 12-13 for singles at my hydro shop in oakland..

i mix FF with perlite at a 25-50% ratio and my plants love it....

the only issue ive had with FF is once i bought a batch that was hot and it burnt my GSC plants which are nute sensitive to begin with..

but seriously never had an issue with gnats or anything...

royal gold coco however? my friends gnats are out of control!!

FFOF seems solid to me. With new ownership no telling where the product will go Hoping for the best expecting the worst.

the main advantage to mixing your own potting mix is that you know what is in it! as w89 stated; a significant advantage here will be using your own humus sources rather than commercial sources>which leave much to be desired as humus resources without significant research

bagged compost and EWC tends to be dry and has sit in warehouses and/or store shelves closed up in a bag

FTMP these commercial preparations are not sourced as an organic gardener might source feedstocks for their own wormbin and compost pile

all this is without even considering nutrient cycling through the compost pile

somehow the soil mixing companies really picked up on the 'cannabis is a heavy feeder' dialogue too ~they mix their pre-amended soils much too hot & again; the humus and biology is not adequately present & growers typically have problems using FFOF or miracle gro type products esp when amended further <all based on experience and observation w/ beginning growers in the infirmary

Based on what?

Do you really think these companies spend time on making the best compost and EWC of course not they are in it for money and they will get the lowest cost, quickest product cheapest low quality ingredients as they can! very few companies actually pride them selves on their product and are in it to make quality products surely you know this....it's the same with everything now-a-days.... Make you own stuff and you know what has gone into it humus is the make or break of a successful grow... do you grow?

FoxFarm is run by good people and offers quality product. I've used FF ferts and soil for over 10 years without issue. I did get burnt plants one time from their 'Ocean Fish' (FFOF) stuff and did not try it again, but their Happy Frog line of potting soil and amendment has never let me down... The chemical nutrient 'pre-charge' put in most PM blends is enough to scare me away.

I used to blend my own potting soil - and got tired of bugs, inconsistent results, shovels and mixing. Then I moved to generic cheap potting soil I amended with all the regular stuff like perlite, worm castings, etc. If I paid myself $5 an hour to prep all those soils I would have spent more on my own mixes than just buy a damn bag of Happy Frog soil and a bag of HF conditioner and staying inside.

To each their own...

In over 10 years of using over 20-40 bags a year I have never gotten bugs or fungus gnats from FF soils. All about where and how it is stored. If your supplier stores it outdoors or near infected soils then gnats and bugs will migrate.

I stopped buying cheap potting soil for that very reason. If its stored outdoors during the summer its sure to be infected with all manner of crap.

agree 100%. I have had root aphids/fungus nats in my Fox Farms soil, but the bag came from a contaminated storage area. I changed my purchase location and have not had them since. I like FF soils.

As far as FF nutrients go? Well I used their grow big and tiger bloom for a while. During this time I was also not keen on dialing PH of soil runoff as well as I am now, but I still managed ok harvests. I will say now that I have run 2 cycles with Maxibloom, gettin my PH 0.X(tenths) down stable as can be, I would never consider going back. FF nutrients are sub-par in PH stability, looks, smell, potency, and easy of growing.

just my opinion of course.

Speculation is one thing I guess, however, I have seen plenty of people first hand use the stuff. One of the most notorious aspects of FF is that it is almost always cut down, that's the only thing I have ever notice 1st hand that was a "complaint" quality-wise.

All companies are really a pyramid scheme and are essentially making you the sucker, good or bad, that's capitalism, we can all make generalizations. I was wondering what 1st hand experience you had, that made you feel that way, aka evidence and to as how you fixed said problem, that's all, not a personal slam or something. [/quote]

Make you own stuff ... do you grow?
Actually, I make my own soil and aero solutions from basically scratch. Feel free to browse my albums from last year. I collect my own clay, mafic rock dust, seaweed and shells at the beach, I actually mine perlite and vermiculite [yes, my state has deposits of both in the ground on public land] I save all organic matter, vermicompost, and I can garden a little, not a lot.

and you know what has gone into it humus is the make or break of a successful grow
I agree, but do you have a TOC, SOM or CAC sample of the FF to share with us, I would bet money and I fucking hate to bet, that they would be above the 75th percentile.

You have the Organic beer goggles on my friend! Not questioning your organic integrity, wondering how or why you came to your conclusion, amigo!

Do you know, they still haven't mapped what a humus particle looks like, is that maybe something you were referring to?
