Epic Storm? How to prepare?

I can't believe the amounts I am seeing on the weather maps: one station's "futurecast" model shows 2 feet in one spot near me and 40 inches in another!!! If this really happens, I can certainly imagine losing power for a good long while even though it will be dry snow. If it comes down to the survival of humans or plants, it's the humans of course. Let's put it this way, I don't think I could afford a week or 2 of running everything on generator. So I have to ask, how long can they be in the dark and still be ok later? Or can I have lights on for a limited time each day? And if so, how long minimum? Well, I hope everyone heeds the warnings and stays off the roads and hunkers down after preparing! I love snow and look forward to big storms especially, but have to admit this has even me a little worried. I welcome the challenge in a way, but hope the power outage situation isn't too bad. peace

I lost power for 7 days during a bad storm and NOTHING could be revived.

thanks man, I guess! No, thanks for real. The least anyone is saying is 16 and most say 2 feet or more! I remember similar storms and not losing power, but that was long ago. I could do a few days of generator but if it comes to weeks, that would be rough or impossible.

I have a generator JUST for situations like this...even though I live only 45 minutes from the technology center of the US (Silicon Valley) we loose power for a week at a time, now it will run only 1/2 my wattage (2K) BUT that is enough to not loose everything.

what latitude are you at Noreaster? I have 18-24" here but I'll be surprised at anything over 12-14"... Idk I'm one of those people that never expects anything, and I rarely lose power but.... it was just the 35th anniversary of the infamous blizzard of '78. (bit before my time though lol)

I work at a gas station, and we ran out of gas! That's (I believe) around 30,000 gallons in about 15 hrs.... shit was outta control! I'm all for snow, but really not feeling it at this point.

if you lose power even a gas furnace won't run so you're stuck using a generator almost full time to keep your home warm & the pipes from freezing etc. The lights from your garden throw off big BTUs in lost heat so use that to your advantage in heating your home.

Same here, everyone who knows anything who lives up in these mountains has a gennie. Two years ago we were fortunate enough to be able to get an 8KW back-up gennie installed as part of our solar array. Just lost power the other night. I LOVE the autoMAGIC transfer switch! We can run damn near everything, but I don't have anything going indoor at the moment. I have found that certain things don't run properly or won't run at all while we're on generator power, most notably electric blankets, and many fluorescent lights.

However, just in case, we also have a woodburning high efficiency fireplace. When it really comes down to it, I've gotta be able to keep warm.

I'm prepared with 2 6 packs of heady beer, about 10 grams of nug oil shatter, water, food, and an xbox. Should be fun.

Snow is still light here - so far. Reports are calling for 15" - 22" and some blasting wind.

I ran out for the essentials this morning. Sugar for the copius amounts of coffee I drink, some cold food in case power goes out, beer (duh) and a fresh pack of papers. Im set.

Not too worried about the power - my plants are almost done.

I've gotten 2 crops through deep blizzards. The mosrt dangerous thing for plants is the cold. You have to find a way to keep the grow room in (about) the 50's. Slows them from growing but does not kill them. Second you need supplemental lighting in the grow room to stop them from triggering. I used 4-5 round "LED camping lights" and had to replace the batteries almost daily. Also shined flashlights on them whenever I thought of it.

The enemy is cold and darkness!

18-24 are the most common numbers you see now, 2-3 feet some say, in isolated spots. I think I will hang on to power. We have wood stoves for plenty of heat. I have a generator and have used it to run lights before, but if it were for a prolonged period it would be very costly. Just light snow now, occasionally moderate. Less than an inch so far but during the evening and night it is really supposed to pile up! Where I am, they show all these little narrow bands. Basically, 5 miles or so could be several inches apart or even up to a foot apart in totals. Have gas and all the other essentials, whiskey and gin and so on. I wish you all well. I don't care how much snow we get here as long as power doesn't go out or goes out for a short time only. peace

Following the hell of Hurricane Ike's landfall we didn't have power for 21 days. Naturally, my grow as completely ruined and our house was all fucked up by the storm, so growing was shut down for quite a while. It was a huge PITA.

Wow! It's hard to say what is out there due to drifting and settling, my yardstick measured anywhere from 21 to 25! The NWS Taunton site said 26 for a town right next to me and I just did limited measuring so far. No matter how you cut it, a lot of snow! (I've also seen 3 foot storms a couple times and this will not make it to that here, but impressive nonetheless)
It is still snowing at a pretty good clip now but I don't think there's much storm left at this point. Not enough to reach 30 here more likely than not. Well the power is fine, maybe I will start moving snow soon but have to make sure it's over first. I hope everyone is fine. Will be interesting to hear the final totals. I guess 3 feet is not out of the question in some spots. peace

Edit: Milford CT has 38 inches!!! Some CT town had 12 inches in 90 minutes last night! I think it was here. That's 8 inches an hour, CRAZY! The power of Mother Nature is truly awesome!
