weird leaf issue, any ideas?

Hi all.

got an issue with my leaves. There not long into flowering so shouldnt be going all yellow already.
Dumped, flushed and re mixed the nutes TWICE.
cut back on the amount of watering thinking they maybe getting over watered.
moved the lights as far away as possible thinking they maybe getting to hot. (its hot here!)

Been growing the same strain for a looong time now and always used the same nutes (canna vega n flores) never had an issue before. Im sure its not a deficiency in anything, never had the problem before with same nutes.. and if it is... why?

calibrated my ph and ec meter so im sure everything is as the norm..

the issue is starting at the top but slowly started spreading down.

anyway any ideas would be muchly appreciated.

yeh i was thinking maybe that.
Not giving them anymore nutes than i usually do.
But should try lowering them i suppose.

what do plants look like when you don't feed them enough? Could it be not enough nutes?

Third and fourth pictures really make me think: root aphids. Check the roots, put up yellow sticky traps to monitor. If you have RAs and flyers, you've got some work ahead of you. With RAs, it gets really bad about a month into flowering or so.

That doesn't look quite like underfeeding to me.

Pull one of the plants from the pot and look at the root ball, scrape some of the bottom off. If it RA you should see them, and good luck if it is. Maybe a peroxide wash, 1 Table Spoon/ Gal. Or pyrethrin mixed with water. Care with peroxide, it will kill just about anything it comes incontact with, that includes your plants roots. It will clean out the root ball though. Ive used it for root rot.

thanks for all the help guys.
I cant really pull the plants up where they are but pulled some rockwool apart and saw some little black flying things in there.

The hydro guy said 'fungus gnats'. Sold me something called 'scarid 10'. diluted it, watered it through my plant pots.

hung some of them yellow sticky things up.

sprayed the leaves with a bug spray thing called 'confidore' i think..

mixed new nutes and added 'hygrozyme' to help the roots. im actually a big fan of this stuff but not used it an ages..

what you guys think? should do the trick i hope..

Also i bought some hydrogen peroxide 6% just incase. how much should i dilute it if i need to?????

Many thanks again.

I doubt it's just fungus gnats, and the Hygrozyme and peroxide may just piss them off. By that I mean the moment they feel 'attacked' the female flyers go into reproduction mode, like fucking crazy. Then things get really fun.

Well iv tried everything i can think of. Ill see what happens, if they end up dyeing on me.. Oh well you cant win them all i suppose. Ive never lost a batch before so had a good run up untill now.

Thanks again and still open to suggestions =)

You said it started at the top... I see some leaves that look like light bleaching with mixture of nute burn, bugs are definatly going to be a problem like sea madian said.... they will cause all kinds of problems.. but bugs are not your only problem.... can you fill out info below would help out much more,

HYDROPONICS/Aero Ponics/Coco/Soiless/

How long has this problem been going on?
Are you growing in a PVC grow tent? (example: Hydrohut or any other non brand tents)
What system are you running? (DWC? Ebb flow? Aero? Water Farm? Flood Tables? and so on...)
What STRAIN are you growing?
What was the establishing technique? (Were the seed or clone?)
What is the age of your plants?
How long have they been in there mixture they are in now?(coco, soiless etc..)
How tall are the plants?
What PHASE are the plants in? (seedling, vegetative or flower) are the plants in?
What Technique are you using?
What substrate/medium are you using?(Hydroton, RockWool etc.)
What is the Water temperature?
What color are your roots? White? Brown? Are your roots slimy?
What Nutrient's are you using?(If growing soiless)
How much of each nutrient are you using with how much water? *Knowing the brand is very helpful*
How often are you feeding? (If using soiless)
How often are you giving nutrients? (If using soiless)
If flowering, when did you switch over to using Bloom nutrients?
What order are you mixing your nutrients? (example: veg nutes 1st, bloom 2nd ect)
What is the TDS/EC/PPM you are using
What is the pH of the "Tank"?
How often are you testing your pH/PPM/EC/TDS?
Are you sure your calibration is correct on your equipment?
When was your last watering?
What is your water temps?
When was your last feeding change? (ie. grow-bloom-micro-additional)
How often do you clean your system: example: Flush out water replace with clean water and nutrients?
What size bulb are you using?
How old is the bulbs you are using?
What is the distance to the canopy?
What is your RH Factor(Relative Humidity)?
What is the canopy temperature?
What is the Day/Night Temp? (Include flucutaion range)
What is the current Air Flow? (cfm etc.)
Tell us about your ventilation, intake exhaust and when its running and not running ?
Is the fan blowing directly at plants?
Is your water HARD or SOFT?
What water are you using? Reverse Osmosis (RO)? Tap? Bottled? Well water? Distilled? Mineral Water?
If using tap water, what is the ppm/EC/TDS of the water right out of the tap?
If using RO,Distilled, mineral water, what is the ppm/EC/TDS without any additives?
Are you using water from a water softener?
Has plant been recently pruned, cloned off of or pinched
Have any pest chemicals been used? If so, What and When?
Are plant's infected with pest's

i concur with all above, use little stakes and cut those yellow aphid sticky pads into little 3" x 5" or so strips, attach to stake and put right above soil 2 in each pot. Works great but only if you aren't INFESTED. i used to use organic soils and had fungus gnats all the time...I would use the Predatory Nematode sponges. I was in soil/coco though so I'm not sure how well it would work in a hydro system since the water recirculates and wouldn't stay in the medium.

If anyone else has experience with the Predatory Nematode sponges have they worked in hydro? Also, can you release predatory nematodes in flower? I would assume it's fine since it's natural right?

could possibly be nute issue as well though, hard to tell from a few pics. What nute line? With some nute lines (especially Advanced) they change formulas often and usually fucks things up when cracking new bottles mid-grow. Just FYI if a possibility, happened to me :(

The only problem is, when you got bugs your going to have nute issues, because the bugs depending on what they so feed off roots and nutes making the plant look like it's low on something when it's not and some people tend to raise nutrient content without getting rid of the bugs first then a new problem starts......

Thanks for all the input guys. looks like it may be sorted. before the yellowing and dying of the leaves was spreading. seems to of stopped getting any worse, but we'll see over the next week i suppose..

as for what i did.

moved the lights further away from the plants.
moved fans to a better positions.
treated roots with 'scarid 10'
also give them a peroxide wash (thought what the hell looks like they may die anyway)
obviously new nutes with a slightly lower ec. there usually around 1.2 but did get a little high i suppose this time...
also added 'hygrozyme' for the roots. big fan of this stuff but not used it for a while.
sprayed with an all purpose bug/aphid spray thing called 'confidore'..
Hung up some yellow stickey things but only had a few little black things stuck to them.

growing in rockwool.
using canna vega and flores.
drip system.
from clones.
strain is female seeds grapefruit.
been growing the same clones for about 8 years or something.
has been really hot recently. up to about 40 Celsius outside so thinking it could be heat stress to. though ive had heat issues plenty of times before and just didnt seem to be the same this time.

thanks again ill keep anyone interested informed.

Oh btw.
its funny the actual buds look very healthy. nice big long thick white pistils. the leaves on the other hand really dont.
Though im sure the buds are not growing as big and fast as they should they look fine.

everyone always thinks that when a problem arises, its root aphids. yes root aphids are deadly and tend to kill plants off but you need to look at other things also. your plants do look like nute burn to me and i would try flushing and start looking for signs of the aphids. do you see bugs on your reflectors. aphids in the adult stage will fly up and most usually die on the reflector. if you see bugs on your reflector or roaming around your medium you can assume the aphids, gnats or flies. what is your ec? what is your ph? all those things are the first thing you check before throwing chemical warfare on your plants.

That's what the sticky yellow traps are for--monitoring. I've got a little experience with RAs, and when a certain tone of bell chimes, I'll offer it up. Chasing your tail after mystery deficiencies, those deficiencies getting worse about a month into flowering, and also rock solid genetics showing hermaphroditism are all 'tells' for root aphids. If you examine the OP's plants closely, it's not one deficiency, it's a cascade of problems, none of which are easily sorted. Until you consider root aphids.

Since the OP reports what s/he thinks are fungus gnats, I personally feel that makes a Dx of root aphids that much more likely. I'm not insisting that's what it is, but that's the direction I personally would take, were it my grow. And I would take it quickly, given my experience with RAs.
