question how wide are 125w cfl's

mine is about 12" long with about a 3" diameter

also, i think the added veg time, for your cab dimensions, would be minimal. maybe 7-15 days to fill the screen 2/3 full before flipping. if you're on point in veg, maybe even less

So, what's the ''sweet spot'' distance from a 125w cfl to have the buds growing? is it like 3-6" away?

I figured maybe putting a 120mm fan below the bulb and blow it vertically to cool the bulb from below

I also have a paranoid question...have any of you ever worried abotu some weird chemicals or whatever getting on your buds from the cfl's, I know they're coated with something. I guess i"ll look for any excuse to go back to the 70w hps idea huh?

There's nothing wrong with trying to build a better box. A lot of great ideas on this site are the result of someone being told that what they're trying to do will never work. If you want to build a mini greenhouse and then mount an HPS above it in a separate coolbox, I say go for it. Let us know how it turns out.

That said, I have no idea why it would be better than having a single box with the lamp in a cooltube, like a bunch of other grows here use(d).

the coating is on the inside of the "tube" ......... don't sweat it

i would be leaning toward the hps too. no excuses needed, just go with what you are comfortable with

For what it's worth, the 70w HPS is destined for the bake-a-round cooltube if you have the ventilation. Still on ebay for less than $15.

Tough to argue with vert, but if your on point a scrog doesn't take extra veg either, the screen will fill in the stretch. My scrog ideas are borrowed from someone who used to do a low and grow aero setup. The canopy was always longer than it was tall.

I still have an idea for a vert/mini-stadium grow in a box, but timid to go thru with it....or time. ;]

stillanoob--You nailed it! Ventilation made easy!!

One of the first grows I ever did was a dresser conversion where I simply cut a hole in the top of the dresser, covered it with glass and laid the light reflector on of that. The light and all it's heat was out in the room while the plants were cool in their relatively closed environment (you should still move some air through the box).

The dresser conversions are long gone and I now use an enclosed box but still separate the two areas. I'll try to snap some photos and show you how it's done but here's a link to a set of photos of the dresser grow I did with the light mounted outside the growing area. It worked great!!

Check out some of the older grows in this section. Some peeps were running 50w hps in a large pc tower. Well under 3'.

While one writes something off as impossible the other finds the way.

absolutely. hint: double cooltube

actually i remember a guy who did a cmh light in a computer. basically he had a cooltube with a huge PC fan sucking out the back. the thing probably sounded like a tornado.
