Should I of removed the plastic wraps from the 3" cubes before putting them in the NFt's? Just been doing a search and some people are saying to leave them on completely, some are saying to pull them up about 10mm and some are saying to take them off?

Just leave them mate.

Just leave them mate.

just took them off...cant see how it can make any difference really though...apart from maybe you might get a bit more air in the cubes and the roots wont be restricted if they want to come out the very bottom at the sides maybe....I dont think they are likely to collapse as the plants arnt going to be very big

Day 27....

For the last 36 hours I have had the NFT pumps on 24/7. The amount of growth has been massive and it would seem this is the rate things should of been happening about a week or so ago......However I have a few problems (see following posts)

I had just sprayed them before I took the pictures

PH 5.8
EC 1.0
3ml per litre of Rhizotonic
0.5ml per litre of Oxygen h2o2
Room temp 26 degrees centigrade
Room humidity 40%

Some of these seem rather droopy?

Where the stems come out of the blocks they are very thin (like they are being strangled) on about 6 of the 17 for about a cm before they start to fatten up..they are so bad a couple of them have fallen over under there own weight. I have put green plant ties around them to try and support them and hold them up more (did this after I took the pictures)

There is one room fan at the end blowing a gentle breeze over them so its not to much air thats causing this....

This one was really bad to the point its going to snap

This is one thats at the very start of the row (right next to the NFT pumps delivery pipe) Its the same as the one on the other side and isnt really growing....also the bottom leaves are burnt on this one only (although the light is about 2 foot away)

think ya got a beaver in there, i cant see properly not stem rot.

They are all like it...but some are worse than others..Where the stems come out the top of the root riots by a cm or two until they are in free air they are a lot thinner (up to 50%)...the longer they are left like this and the more they grow up top and the weight increases then they will all fold over I reckon

The tops of the root riots are totally soaking...when i touch them they are very squishy

The rest of the stems all look healthy to me its just the very bottom

Maybe its the light against the top of the root riots doing something although the light isnt getting at the roots?

The roots themselves under the cover are nice and white

The lightproof plastic is covering the entire top of the NFT's and clipped down tight...perhaps there is a lack of air getting in there?

Im googling for similar problems but dont seem to find anything

And cant say ive noticed a beaver in there :)

 thats prob your problem from the get go. might be able to fool around with making wire or? to hold them up. what a pisser, starting to look the goods think there still getting to much water.

Is this stem rott?

Anyone else help me out here please?

Now thinking along the lines of 15mins water every 4 hours. Will also make some holes so the roots can breath....this has to have something to do with the cubes being totally soaked and lack of aeration underneath

Just had a proper look at them...

Theres 17 in total and can safely say at the moment 5 have no chance

The other 12 have the beaver ring round them just above the cube but below the ring the stem is the same size and a healthy green colour like above...However when I push the root riot apart a big the stem thats inside is a healthy green colour but with whiteish dimples on it?

Either way im fucked as I cant go throwing the other 27 in there and the same thing happens to them so it looks like a kill and properly clean job then replace the fucked 17 with new seedlings.

Need to establish what the cause of this was though. I put a proper thermometer in the water earlier and its 28 degrees!...the plastic on top is sort of acting like an oven so ive moved the lights up about another foot

The rockwool cubes are so wet they are almost falling apart...I think its a combination of heat, massive overwatering and lack of ventilation due to the plastic sheet being pulled over the whole system and clipped down with 20+ fold back stationary clips so theres no where the air can get into the roots...I have now folded the end back however so air can get in

Having the tray covered shouldn't cause problems, are you sure that is what is causing the excess heat? I remember you said you have an aquarium heater in the tank, the built in thermostats on tank heaters can be a bit crap for accuracy, turn your heater down.
If you do have to start new seeds, don't put them in the system until the bottom of the RW cube is completely covered in roots, I mean all you want to see is roots, barely any RW visible. Rockwool works great, but you have to follow its rules. Grodan have(or had) a lot of good information on their website.

Thanks all...

They are a pathetic state at the moment 2 or defintely dead I would say and the rest apart from one are following...The is one big one in there without any damage on its stem thats looking rather happy...they are no where near dry yet and its been 36 hours (the 3" cubes are still soaking)...not sure what would happen if i turned them back on maybe perk up?...fact of the matter theres something nasty on there so pointless as dont fancy being well into flower and it comes back again.......

By Thursday night im going to have them out and the system cleaned good and proper

I have 12 seedlings that are in 3" cubes all have roots out of the bottom but ive only used ph'd tap water on them so far and they are looking a bit of a light green colour now so im going to give them 0.8 Ionic grow and some h202 hopefully tomorrow...I really want them blasted full of roots this time

I have 15 in 1" cubes that are about 5 days old now with roots out of the bottom so im going to be putting these into 3" cubes tomorrow also

I am thinking of getting another 15 of the same seeds (big buddah original cheese) by the end of the week and get them on the go also

Because of the vert lights between the nft's and have strings across across the sides and yoyos I am trying to put them in about a week behind each other with the biggest ones at the back, next ones in middle and little ones at the front (hoping the ones at the front will only need 7-10 days veg) this should form a U shape configeration around the lights....with just over 20 in each nft

Do you think when i put the cover on again I should have one end open?...im concerned about algae etc but I could drill some holes in above the water line of the nft's so I know there is some air getting in and wont be in direct light

Ive got a fish tank heater in each NFT..these are rena smart fish tank heaters (expensive) but the stat only goes down to 20 degrees (I think this is normal) The heaters are on a timer so im going to set them to come on only at lights off

For veg im now going to go 18/6 so the water can cool off a bit

Because the chiller is so noisy I can only really have it on 6 hours a day so this will kick in 3pm - 9pm and is on a timer

The 6 hours lights off will be 9am-3pm

This means 9pm - 9am they are going to be left to there own devices. Ive maxed out the in fan so once the room hits 25 degrees it will push in nice cold air (it will hit 25 quickly)...hit the fan on the end wall and push it in

The out fan cant be adjusted due to noise and its at its max level (getting quite a bit of suction when i hold the door against the frame when I go to lock it)

The tubular heaters have there own stat of which is set to 20 degrees and once the in fans stat goes below 20 degrees it turns off and become passive

The chiller and pump is now on a phone controlled socket so i can manually turn it on or off or set the automatic on and off times

Fuck my head hurts lol

Phoned local hydro shop today and told him had damping off problem and before I could get a word in edgeways he said "overwatering"

I think the main problem is the water temp...that combined with me having the pumps going on for 30mins twice a day at the start and having the cover fixed down air tight has caused the roots to sit in hot putrid water and caused disease

I dont believe its purely overwatering as we all know people run them 24/7 from the off...the 3" cubes were well established also so the main problem points to water temps

Hi all...Someone on another forum had his first 4 grows wiped out with this same stem rott he was using NFT and seedlings also.

He experimented with various watering techniques etc of which made no difference until he lowered his EC right down then built it up slowly with the water on 24/7 and the blocks straight on the spreader matt then he had success...he did this because he noticed it didnt happen if he put the established blocks straight on in ph'd water. So in my case my EC was 1.2 so they had gone from EC 0.4 (EC of plain tap water) to 1.2. Do you think its possible this is the reason? Perhaps its strain dependant? I allways thought if you over nute them the first thing that happens is you get tip burn etc?

I also had Oxygen h202 at 60ml per 100 litres in the mix........

Tonight I am going to try hitting the blocks with a grow EC of 0.8 (they have only had ph'd water so far and the roots are well out of the blocks now) and leave them in the propogation tent?.......
