Kelp Meal & Neem Cake? What ratio

At what ratio to I mix in the Kelp Meal with the Dolemite Lime, Blood and Bone Meal? Neem Cake too?

I put it in this mix but I used extra worm castings and I need a little more perlite. Where can I get the best kind of KELP MEAL and NEEM CAKE?

RECIPE #1

If you want to use organic nutrients like Blood meal, Bone meal and Kelp meal...

1 tablespoon Blood meal per gallon or 1/2 cup per cubic foot of soil mix
2 tablespoons Bone meal per gallon or 1 cup per cubic foot of soil mix
1-tablespoon kelp meal per gallon or 1/2 cup per cubic foot of soil mix
or Maxicrop 1-0-4 powdered kelp extract as directed
(OPTIONAL) 1 tablespoon per gallon or 1/2 cup per cubic foot of Jersey Greensand to supplement the K (potasium) in the Kelp Meal and seaweed extract.

Not really a fan of that recipe. But here's my feedback:

1. There is a HUGE difference between kelp extract and kelp meal. You want kelp meal for mixing your soil. I like to use it at a rate of 1 cup per cubic ft. Acadian seaplants is a good brand. It's N. Atlantic Sea Kelp (ascophyllum nodosum) You can get it locally at any feed store in 50 lb bags. Don't bother with the Dr. Earth brand of any of the others that your hydro store might carry. Total ripoff on price.

2. For neem cake, you want the brand Jerry listed (Ahimsa Neem). I recommend a rate of 1/2 cup - 1 cup per cubic ft of soil.

3. You can get both in smaller quantities from www.kisorganics.com if you can't find it locally.

4. Kelp extract can be used for watering, though Maxicrop is an inferior brand in my opinion, due to the manner in which they extract the kelp. I prefer Acadian or Nature's Essence, as they are both cold water processed. You want the same species of kelp as I listed above.

Hope that helps,
CT

You can. The kelp extract is highly soluble and allows for immediate application. It is very inexpensive, though the kelp meal has some additional benefits over the extract. Either option is going to be cheaper/better than anything you get from a bottle. The kelp extract is what you find mixed with water and molasses in many popular organic bottled nutrients.

or get the ahimsa neem and kelp from KIS in the same order (they repackage the neemresource.com neem). It's the same product. If you need large quantities, like a 44# bag, and can source the kelp meal locally, I'd go with neemresource.com

Hope that helps!

CT, I'm sitting here on the KIS site looking at their oyster shell flour, and it looks markedly different from the oyster shell flour I purchased from Peaceful Valley. Any idea why that is? Also, do you know anything else about their soluble seaweed powder? What it's made from, how it's made, yadda yadda yadda? It's the oyster shell flour that's really got my attention, mine's pretty much a white/grayish-white color.

This is the KIS stuff, it's from Pacific Pearl. Can't believe it's $5/lb on Amazon!

This link explains it better:

I'm quite happy with the consistency and quality.

What did you want to know about the seaweed powder? It's from Nova Scotia and is cold water processed ascophyllum nodosum. Very Soluble! Just the moisture on your skin will cause it to solubilize. Dug this up on my computer:

CT, you've provided the info I was curious about regarding the soluble kelp powder. The oyster shell powder I'm still curious about, considering how it's harvested and the fact that it appears to be a fossil product (no mention of living carpenter oysters in the bay) and not a byproduct of, say, oyster mariculture, and that's with specific regard to what I'm accustomed to (the white powdery stuff), and whether this product performs better than any other OSP. I mean, is there a reason why this might be better than another OSP? Appearance is about all I have to go on, given the information provided in the link. Thanks!

Coot knows the difference. He's the one that got me using this brand. You'd have to ask him though.

I think that you have a bad link in your Image Directory - the one at the KIS Organic web site doesn't appear to be OSP but does kinda look like fish meal.

Peaceful Valley sells Pacific Pearl's OSP
