Whats life in California like?

California's population is still growing, primarily because tons of babies are being born. The state is however bleeding middle class. Lots of middle class moving east for cheaper cost of living.

No fun being poor in a rich town; you will be on the outside looking in.
Just because there's Hollywood, lots of expensive cars driving past, glitzy shops, doesn't mean when you move there you are going to be part of it, unless you get a high paying job.
To live the lifestyle you have to be constantly peddling that treadmill like mad, and if you stop you will fall off and end up a homeless person living on the street.
The California lifestyle might appeal to you but if you don't have the money you will not be partaking of it, you will just be on the outside looking in.
If you think you can compete; that is get a well paid job over all the other applicants applying for the limited jobs available, then go for it; otherwise it will end up the Boulevarde of Broken Dreams for you.

I moved here, and the only reason i'm staying is cause I don't want to go home and have people think I failed at life...lol

Life is great here but is not nearly as simple. Gas is more expensive, so is car ownership (car prices/taxes/etc.), as well as rent, well with everything except weed...and weed isn't really that much cheaper! People aren't as friendly as where i'm from, there's a loooot of people out here already doing everything you wanna do better than you're gonna do it...basically, don't come out here unless you're a relatively humble person who's generally great at everything they ever do.

^^^He isn't lying. Good luck explaining how you have money for rent...why you moved...find a landlord that will let you do what you wanna do...gotta have references, gotta get your license/mmj card, gotta get a CA #, find somewhere to stay while you find a place, find the right area for you...many of these are easier said than done.

I came here in August to look at places, then back in October, then in November I came and got my place....I've spent like $30k so far, and I live IN BUMFUCK and I do not have a grow...if I were growing, it'd be double that at least.

You wanna live in the bay and be hella hyphy and chill? My homie spends $1200/month (plus utilities) and he has a studio apartment...it's a 5x10 bathroom, a 7x7 kitchen, and a 12x10 bedroom/living room/everything. Have fun getting yelled at by your neighbor every time you pack a bowl cause they're 4 feet away.

That's an average mortgage......mine is nearly the same...but $50 more per month.

PG&E 800 month +++ add 1200 if you grow small
DMV tags 500 a year per vehicle
Car insurance 800 per vehicle
Fuel....if drive at all 200 per month
Food.....400-600 month for small family

Just had to buy tires for the wife's rig....250 per tire.

If you own a boat....and even if its paid off...they have a frickin user fee....which could be 200-1000 per year....it's basically a tax for owning a boat.

I could go on and on.....but I need more coffee....only on my 1st cup right now....

Oh and there are very few good jobs....right now....private business has been hammered....entrepreneur's driven out of business....whole industries just frickin gone....and I am not sure we will ever get those business back.

Holy snicky's lol that mortgage is a killer.

What are you driving that it's $500/vehicle? Not even our farm truck is costing us that much to register. Curious about that.

Don't forget that, depending what county you're in, you're going to have to get your vehicle smogged every other year. We live in a county where you only need smogging at first registration, and then you're done for life with it. Never knew that existed here in Cali until I moved out of the LA area.

What I wanna know is how youre feeding a small family for less than 20 dollars a day, im single and spend that much on dinner every night.
Also, the cost of your tires, is not gonna be any different in any other state, if youre paying 250 per youre buying really nice tires for a nice car. I just got new bfgoodrich all terrain for my truck and they were 250 each, thats a really large sized and high quality tire. My DMV tag is only 350 on a 45k truck, still 7x as much as I paid back home. And 2200 on rent/mortgage is hella cheap, just one of my costal mountain rentals is 4400, hence the reason Im no longer growing indoors after this month.

Your probally right.....I just threw that out there most likely double that.....it was a "just saying" post.

We grow a lot of our own produce & purchase our meat from 4h members.....get a pig every year...and know what that baby was feed....best pork around.

The DMV tags were for new vehicles a few years ago...most likely 350 a year now.

The vehicle those tires are on has quite a few miles..but it's a solid SUV....and I figured WTF we are going to drive it a few more years...and I want to make sure it's safe.......chit who can afford a new vehicle.....all of our vehicles are paid off....its nice not to have a car/truck payment.

Heh, Dave and I were just talking about what I did with my 4H pigs. I didn't sell them, we slaughtered them ourselves. The whole point of raising the pigs IS for the meat. I can't imagine trying to milk a pig, that much is for certain.

A good set of snow & muds on a 4WD are always going to cost you more. But if you live in an area where there's snow annually, it beats the shit out of chains with a poopy stick.

Yet this Golden state has one of the top five LEAST populated counties in the US, including Alaska--Alpine County. San Diego County, IIRC, has the most Indian reservations of any county in the entire US as well. My county has a whopping 39,000 total population, and at least 5,000 of them are incarcerated at a state prison (that may be expanding, thanks to our priorities).

Buying food from the market and preparing it yourself...? Maybe they're growing some of their own food, but I know it can be done. Of course, you'd better like rice & beans.

In our area....the kids always look for someone who will purchase a back up pig for them...then they raise both...choose the one for the fair...and we get the other one...we pay up front for the pig and food from the start....works out for us and gives the kids a little extra money and their choice of pigs to take to the fair...then we have it butchered and cut and wrapped.

Never would have pegged you as a pig killer:)
Alpine County sounds interesting though.
What are the plant limits there?

Hey, now that's a pretty good idea. It's been a LONG time since I've raised a hog, a seriously long time. Can't have changed all that much from when I was kid, though, right?

Hell YEAH I'm a pig killer! I wasn't allowed to actually pull the trigger, though.

I have no idea what Alpine's plant limits, if any, might be. But, being an extremely rural county, I would expect an odd combination of 'mind your own damn business and keep off my claim!' with 'you cain't marry that sheep without the ram's permission!'

Let me see if I can figure out if they've enacted anything on limits. I can't find anything thus far that shows they've enacted their own controls or limits on cultivation.

250 bucks per tire is about right. The Michelin M&Ss we slapped on the Excursion last winter set us back ~$1300 dollars and that was the best price I could find (Sam's Club)

WOW an Excursion.....man

I've been in a black ice accident in the high country (coming up to Silver Lake). If the snow berms weren't as high as they were, I would have been hurt badly going over the edge towards the lake. Or, if someone had been coming the other way, I would have smeared them. These tires have a weird grabby feel to them, but when it's snowy/icy out, I like it. That black ice accident was just surreal, and pretty scary looking back on it. I'm surprised the vehicle stopped, tell you the truth.

We got the Excursion so we could fit everyone into the same vehicle and still have a 4WD. After spending several months trying to stuff our combined family into the Blazer I'd had enough. I wanted a minivan, though, because I have always also brought my dogs along. Dave was completely NOT about the minivan, and then he found the Excursion, used, for a pretty good price, so we got it. It's old now, gettin' beat up, had to just replace the motor (long, messed up story, torque down those plugs! Obsidian was right), but it's still a damn good vehicle and out-tows anything else I've put it up against.

So, while I would have done a minivan, I suppose the Excursion is pretty good, too. Both my sisters have brand new vehicles with all the bells and whistles, and I've got some envy. Til it's time to go somewhere with the Little Travel Trailer That Could, then I want 'scursion.
