Need someone who's more ventilation savvy than I! Annoying duct problem

Hi guys. So, this is the exhaust from my tent. It ends in an 8" ghetto-rigged duct muffler.

There's a convenient hole right above the tent that is approximately 12x12" ID that had a grill on both sides, I removed the inside:

Here's the other side with the same grill, which is 13.5"x13.5" OD:

If it's not obvious by now, I would like to vent through here! But how in the world do I get that round 8" peg into that 12" square hole? :shucks:

surely 8'' will go into 12'' lol. another false plate bigger than square hole with 8'' hole in that .

^ 8" fits in 12", get more ducting, and run it off the end of your ghetto silencer to the square hole. get a board, put a 8" flange on it, trace around, cut out the circle, mount the flange, connect your ducting, done.

I literally did that this evening.
I had a 6" pipe though and rather than buy a flange... because I am super cheap I used a 6" coffee can cut up to make a flange. Which I stuck in a board that covered the hole. Thought that this would be fairly obvious.
I believe they probably sell some sort of round to square duct at HD or Lowes. If you don't want to tackle cutting wood, drilling screws, or attaching flanges.

You could get a 12" side take-off and then reduce it down to 8". Hd or lowes probably wouldn't have anything that big though. You'd probably have to go to an hvac wholesaler. It would be pretty easy to make something yourself though.
A side take-off looks like this:

That looks perfect! I'll have to go looking for one of these.

The plywood is a good option too, but I don't really have a hole-saw and stuff, so I'm hoping to go with the pre-fab option before I have to go buy more tools...

Yep, my main problem is lack of a hole-saw and plywood, and I am willing to bet the prefabbed ducting piece is cheaper on its own!

cannabunker's pic should solve all your troubles !!!!!

AND

look real hard at the elbow he used ............ flex duct sucks ass when you start putting 90 degree bends in it. don't make your fan work harder than it has to

When you screw the flange or reducer to the drywall, you may have to put in some plastic anchors for screws, is there playwood at the window edge.

I think you will find the prefab solution to be incredibly more expensive... doesn't need to be plywood to mount flange to... sheetrock would work, might be able to get a scrap piece somewhere for nothing can be cut with a razor knife. GreenMatter is 100% right about the elbow... smoke a bowl get creative and get it done.

ya id say if u cant cut it with any tools. get a razor.. and use some thick cardboard to use were the wood is used in the picture.. as long as theres no weight being put on the cardboard is should be fine.. thats a cheap easy way to do it.. i made a window box at my first ever grow out of a AC box.. and it housed 4 6 inch ducting running to 4 rooms all going out 1 window with a window fan helping it get out and each rooms own fan.. was prety GHetto.

I really like this idea... flange + random piece of sheetrock would definitely be the cheapest option. I already have a bunch of drywall screws and the plastic backing for them. Would be stronger than cardboard and easier to cut than plywood... :woohoo: I'll give this a shot today.

Dude a piece of particle board is like $10. For a giant 4x8 sheet. You don't need a hole saw. If you have a sawzall you can rough a circle out and then just put tape around your duct. I find it hard to believe you can't get a free piece of wood that would cover that vent.

I also don't have a Sawzall, or even a hand saw at this point. Used to live with roommates that had tools and I'd mooch on theirs, recently living alone and haven't built up a tool collection past what I use for electronics engineering. I have tons of screwdrivers, a dewalt drill, wrenches, soldering irons, etc... Wood tools not so much. I'm investing in things as I need them, but money's tight and I don't want to pick up any more power tools at this point.

I do have a hammer, though. :shucks: :bashhead:

I like the drywall idea though... Find a random piece for free, cut it and stick a flange on it. Drywall screws into the wall. I even have drywall screws! Heh.
