winterizing BHO

Ok, ended up deciding against the ISO/brine wash, I didn't even get much wax to precipitate in the iso, even in a dry-ice/iso bath.

I ended up using 151proof everclear, strongest available in mi.

I'm glad to report it works supremely well, 95% might evaporate slightly faster, but the lower proof worked very well.

A benefit of the lower proof(at least it seems a benefit) is that near the end of evaporation, you end up with more of the milky white water, which serves as a fairly good "water wash".

I pour out the white liquid as soon as its clear little to no alcohol remains, leaving a very clean shatter.

I'd like to try centrifugation in ethanol at low temps, but getting temperature down while simultaneously processing in a centrifuge posess a challenge.

Also, has anyone experimented with activated charcoal?

You want ,.... I got

You want ,.... I got

So I got me some 190 proof EVERCLEAR !!!!!! :woohoo:

going to do some winterizing tonight,.... so as far as I remember all I have to do is blast tane, then evape off a bit , but no vac purge necessary.... then freeze for 24 hrs, filter fats out through coffee filter and vac purge off your stuff without heat , anyone got anyhting to add?

What ham said, the waxes you'll get to coagulate have a tendency to melt back into the alcohol when warmed so pour some in a filter and stick it in the freezer, the filters clog pretty quick too, so going a little at a time allows easy swap outs.

I'm jealous, I guess I need to order some, but I wanted to make clear 151 works fine for those unwilling to order or who are in a rush.

Well said Arch. It's the one aspect that myself and Jump didn't fully explain when we first advocated the winterization method, so alot of people don't know that they should ideally filter either while the solution is still refrigerated, or use chilled instruments and filter paper with a Büchner flask. I think that we assumed that people would know to chill their instruments and filter quickly but it later became evident that some weren't doing this. It's not of critical importance but it's the typical procedure followed in the fragrance industry, for good reason and it makes sense to do it properly if you're already going to the effort of winterization. All the best.

Really, it should go without saying, as you have to chill the solution to get the waxes to precipitate, and when warm they aren't precipitated, therefore logically you have to filter cold.

I keep half of my freezer empty, my little cold lab. Everything goes in a day before and stays until all the wax is filtered and the filter is mostly dry.

190 proof etoh or ethanol or neutral grain spirits works best for me.

so chill 190 proof ethanol jars filters, while process is going on, how much alcohol would use per G of bho, just enough to dilsolve

That's a good rough guide by Jump. THC has a solubility in ethanol of 50 mM, which equates to 1 g per 64 ml. Obviously BHO isn't pure THC so less ethanol is needed. The terpenes present also reduce the amount of ethanol needed.

I bet you were all dabbed and were like fuck guys we need to take them chicken nuggets and pizzas out the ice box, we makin room for absolutes! And all of sudden a great realization came upon everyone in the room. Holy fuck boys were in canada, outside is our icebox!

Nothing wrong with a little assistance from mother nature!

0F is what I usually try an winterize at or close to it.

If I was you id leave the mix outside overnight covered to not get any dust out particles and filter first thing in the morning. Or later if it stays colder all day. The colder you get it the more shit will precipitate/drop out

I love in Colorado by the way 8k in the sky lol which allows for some good cold nights at or near 0f. It allows natural winterization and doesn't give a fuck about batch size ha ha

You know, a still can be imported from the states and you could make 100% clean 190-200 proof ethanol. I cant wait to get some cash together for a hillbilly still.
