Indoor Stealth Sour Spyder Grow

Hi Everybody! This might be my first post here, but I can't remember where I posted before.

I have three regular Sour Spyders just popping out their first true leaves. I'm planning to try growing them inside a small grow box that I just made up in an unheated rafter crawl space above my business. Hoping for girls! I really like the idea of hybridizing and making my own seed, but first I want some really good bud.

First let me get something off my chest...I have some advice for newbies despite the fact that I've never successfully grown plants to full bud. My advice is this: the number one concern for a stealth grow is odor control. Until you've tried it, you just can't believe how much smell pot plants can put out.

To illustrate, let me tell you the story of one of my failed grows, from about ten years ago. I was living in a small house that I was renting for cheap on account of it being a somewhat informal situation where I had to take care of the house. The owner's family members still had some of their stuff upstairs. Unbeknownst to me...the college aged kids still had keys.

I decided to try a small closet grow under some flourescents. I ordered seeds from a well-known seed company and they arrived safely (I can't remember the variety). I only got maybe five seeds. I seeded them, and what do you know a frickin' mouse ate all but one. However, that one precious plant survived. When it was only two or three inches tall, I had to go away for the weekend. I put a sofa against the wall over the closet door, and in a fit of paranoia suspended a piece of paper between the back of the sofa and the wall.

When I came home two days later, the first thing I noticed when I opened the front door was the rich smell of cannabis. That little two-inch plant had filled the whole house with it's smell! Then I saw that the piece of paper was on the floor...someone had been in the house and seen my little plant. Needless to say, I liquidated the operation that very evening. I didn't hear anything for six months, when my landlord stopped by (after I had just smoked a bowl of stinky resin, lol) and politely asked me not to grow on their property.

Anyways, that's my advice. You have to consider odor control. I've tried a stealth Rubbermaid grow about two years ago, and went to work and ordered a carbon filter on eBay, but at the time I aborted that grow my closet was still starting to smell.

This time I'm banking on ozone. Some people say it's toxic, which it is, and others say it is very effective, which I am hoping. I ordered an OZN-1. I plan to run it in the attic space on a timer as little (or much) as possible to control the smell.

I'm hoping to create a grow environment that takes care of itself for the most part, as the access to this space is in a public place...although I can access it at night when noone should be around, it will always be a little nervewracking to go up there. I need to use an auto-flowering variety, because I am relying on the lights to provide the heat for the box and keep the plant from freezing, since I live in a very cold climate. I'm using two or three 65W CFL's in a 23" x 18" x 39" box.

Anyways, thanks for listening! I hope to post updates, and I hope I can finally grow plants to harvest. If any smell drifts into a public area, however, I'm afraid I'll have to abort. I just don't have the money/time/energy to order and rig up a carbon filter this time around.

Tonight I finished my wiring and moved my box into position. The ambient temp in the crawl space is below freezing, so the question is if the lights alone will keep it at a suitable growing temperature. I have a wireless thermometer in there, and the temp had climbed to about 60 F last I looked. The leaf temp is bound to be warmer because of the radiant heat of the lights.

Best of luck with the grow, and I wish you well on the stealth aspect. BTW I sacrificed a bud of spyder today to appease the gods.

please keep us updated!

Thanks for your interest. So far it's going good. I just went up there for the first time in about a week and they were fine. It's pretty slick; I have a wireless thermometer and remote switches controlling an extra light bulb for heat and the vent fan. Now if I could rig up a wireless webcam and maybe an remote watering system I'd be set. No need for the ozone yet.

Sorry no pics yet...privacy and timing issues.

I'm sorry you had to make that sacrifice, but hopefully the gods' anger will be blunted somewhat by your offering. I'll try to remember to make a similar offering.
