Why I grow Feminized Seeds

Six weeks down the damn drain :badday:

I wanted some Blue Satellite to smoke, oh well at least the 6 female seeds indoor mix I got to germinate are still there.

For me its gonna be nothing but fems from now on can't take these kinds of setbacks with my little setup, puts me off track too much.

I had a similar experience years ago. I put down 7 seeds, of 3 different varieties, expecting 2-4 females. Probability had the day and I ended up getting 7 males. I learned the hard way that one and only time.

Just gotta pop more beans.... I've always had decent ratios when the number selected from is large enough, damn near 50/50 this last seasons outdoor..

EDIT: Actually there was about 4 fucking sneaky ass shemales in this last seasons outdoor, so I guess that ratio might be a bit off...... Its always a crap shoot dude, make the best of it and flower them boys out for moar seed to select from!!

Wouldn't be a big issue if people making seeds weren't so damn greedy.

There is a difference in getting 10 seeds for 10-15 bucks compared to 50 bucks.

just my stupid opinion

luckily there are still seed banks that sell regular ones, not just femmed ones.

Then again, I do see the pov of someone wanting to just grow girls, and getting only few out of a seed package...

There are methods involving specific environmental conditions which help influence the sexing process towards females, and a few of those methods have worked for me, the most effective of which is keeping the temperature within the range of 68-74F, especially during the 3rd and 4th weeks of veg.

While i've never gotten super majorities of females, the thing i've managed to avoid in all the seedlings kept at ideal temperatures is gluts of males, i'd call it a consistent average of 6-7/10 sexing in my favor.

Sooper is right. I don't use a heat mat for seedlings. Someone on here popped a 10 pack of sour bubble, I can't remeber forsure, but i think he got 2 females. I did the same, and popped 6 females. Your method might have something to do with you ratios.

Upon re-reading it, I'm not sure about the week 3 and 4 part. As far as I know/have been told, it matters most when you pop them. I'm not saying I'm right, I just wanted to clear that up.

I use female seeds for "fillers" when Im short clones or when popping new unsexed seeds.. that way I can look at it and go ok, I got 6 unsexed seeds but I KNOW these other 3 are females. Or just depending on what im doing, lets say I have a bad cloning run ( I grow 10 plants at a time) no problem, pop some fems and fill the vacant spots. Once in a while I will clone a fem plant but usually not. I have my own reasons and thats not the issue here. \

Just my .o2.... keeps a grow from being a total failure:thinking:

Yeah, after trying fem seeds I think they'll always feature at least partially in any grows from now on.

The chromosomes are complete before the plant is a fully formed seed.

The sex is generally determined at conception... there are however varying influences to beat nature (light poisoning, ethylene inhibition, etc) and regress female flowers to male.

Hope this helps.

If seed prices are an issue grow and breed your own, then germinate more than you want and toss the males when they show.

I did the same with Flo I bought some years ago, pollinated two lowest branches. I wound up with 280 seeds and been growing it ever since. I germinate more than I want and typically wind up with 60% females.
Much cheaper than buying feminized or even regular seeds and you get the satisfaction of breeding your own AND you know what you'll have and really get to know your strain!

It's one thing to sling a bunch of seeds to germinate. It's another to find room enough for them to vegetate before you flip and find out what your ratio is. If you have 10 or fewer seeds, the law of averages says you could end up with very few (or no) females. The more you veg, the closer you'll be to 50-50, but it's tough for some of us to find that kind of room.

That said, I've never run fem seeds. I just take my lumps. At least in hydro, you get through veg faster. It'd be a real bummer to run through 2 months of a soil grow and strike out. Especially with pricey seeds.

I ain't no probabilities expert, but I think if you flip 6 coins, you don't have a 99% chance of one of them being heads. I think it's less. And if you do it enough, you'll end up with all tails for sure at some point.

Now if you flip 100 coins.... But not everyone has room to flip 100 coins.

Every time you flip a coin it's a 50/50 chance. No matter what happened on other flips.
