HID vision concerns. how do you handle yours?

looking at these damn HID lights is hell on your eyesight. i don't use MH (which they tell me are the worst), but when i wind up looking directly at one of those HPS, even if it's only for a second, i can still see that glowing gas tube burned on my retina for a good little while, even after i've left the shop.

what are you fellas and ladies wearing to keep your eyes protected?

after i noticed my eyes getting worse, i started rocking dark raybans in my shop. problem is, i'm in and out of my various rooms pretty regularly. the flower room is the only one that's bright enough for shades indoors, so i'd wind up taking them off and wandering back into the room without having put them back on.

then i got a pair of transitions. problem is, the ones that they sell you everywhere if you just ask for transitions only react to UV light, and apparently HID lights don't throw much UV, since they wound up staying clear even directly lit by a 1000 watt HPS.

back to the drawing board. i sent out for transitions xtractive lenses. they stay light tinted all the time and darken to 90% in bright lights, and they react to visible light as well as UV.

whatever it is you use, do cover your eyes if you're growing indoors. we don't need a bunch of blind old growers running around out there.

A hat. Ya, doesnt do much good looking up.

My buddy has a pair of Lumii's that are pretty slick. Might look for a pair of those - can take pics through em too.

Always wear a hat and glasses.I have also made a curtain that shields my eyes and face .Since my carbon filter in on the ceiling ,I took panda film and wrapped it over a portion of the filter, draping down a couple of feet.
It's outside of my plants area but between my maintenance place and the stack of bulbs.
Its helps alot.
Maybe use a small miniblind?

I use raybans as well as I am only rocking a single 1k which is horizontal under glass. I am very anal about always having my glasses if I even step outside so I almost always have them on me when I get to my spot. You may want to get a pair of welding goggles off amazon and hang then just outside/inside the flower room. This way as soon as you walk in you can put them on and if you walk out to say, mix up some nutes. You can just hang them from your neck and they will be on you when you go back in. If I were doing barebulb vert I would do that. If the welding goggles are a bit too much (they are going to be darker then your raybans) then you could always get some sort of strap for your raybans (don't know what they are called) and that would allow you to hang them from your neck so you don't set them down somewhere inconvenient.

yeah these lights F' your eyes even when not looking directly at them... even when just in the room. I am thinking about getting some method 7 glasses... they're made with indoor growers in mind, they correct the color from the HPS and they are supposed to protect your eyes really well weather indoor or under the sun...

Anyone got Method 7 glasses, care to share an opinion?

I have some method 7's and they do work well. I especially like how easy it is to look at the plants for extended periods to study health, palish green leaf color etc. - true colors come thru well with these.

sucks that they are so costly. $150 for mine and they were $200 not long ago.

The other thing i dont like is the lack of side light protection - frog eye type goggles have this but the method 7's are not that type. I remedied this problem by wearing some ski goggles with an added duck tape visor over the method 7's. Now I feel better protected but its harder to get that true color.

IMO, method 7 is looking to cash in on growers in much the same way as AN nutrients.
More about the stylish good looks. The color rendition does feel a bit strange too in natural sunlight.

I heard about some german made UVEX lab grade glasses that are only 10 bucks and offer great protection but without the style. If I hadnt already bought the method7, I might have gotten those instead.

thanks man, I need something to protect my eyes better... thats for sure. With the ray bans I feel like I can't see as well, and like avant gardner I often forget to put them back on coming in and out of the room... but yeah, I don't care what I look like in the garden so If I could find some cheap pair that protects as good that would be cool.

There's a bunch here much cheaper too, but wonder if they work as good as the method 7. Some are better cause they have side protection. Doesn't make sense to wear a 7 method 150usd glasses if it doesn't protect U fully around the eyes. Any time U bend or turn around ur head, U eyes will be exposed to the light. I wear a cap to avoid this problem.

However I think I still might give the method 7 a go. Probably better than my regular sunglasses anyway.

* The lightweight unilens of these safety glasses offers panoramic vision so you can fully take in the splendor of your workplace.

*The nose fingers on these safety glasses conform to fit a wide variety of individuals, even circus performers.

* Need a little length in the temple of your safety glasses? Do it. These safety glasses are cheaper than the plastic surgery needed to move your ears closer to your cheekbones.

* Custom imprinting is available on these safety glasses. Say you want 10,000 safety glasses that say “John,” call us.

Was diagnosed with early cataracts last year. Pretty sure it's from the HID lighting in my grows. Everything is fucking hazy, especially at dusk. Really hard to drive safely. Now I wear a baseball cap and my Maui Jims. Lesson learned the hard way...

ugh. there's a healthy dose of reality. really sorry to hear that. now had it been glaucoma, i know something that helps with that.

...

anyway i sprung for $30 for a couple pairs of those lumii specs for my partner and myself. the website says they screen out UV and infrared. is there anything else in the HID spectrum that's harmful to one's eyesight? the only thing worse than knowing you're not protected is thinking that you are when you aren't.

blind yet, hope not.

:tiphat: if running vert this does work. but still need glasses on when pulling it down to cover globe, light and heat still goes out rear, used old alum hood covers half of cylinder which shields your eyes, works for me, could be pain in butt for others. also was that light weight ,added weight to bottoms.
