STRAIN NAMES

I was just wondering what you guys thought of all the strains names that are out today ? Do you think that seed buyers are getting screwed over with names and brands or do you think such names are important ?

Shouldn't we just remember that it's either sativa or indica ?

i think alot of the names are completely stupid but then again it ads some interest at the same time.
lineage is important, and i think its important to be able to recognise some thing in case you want to buy it or grow it again. but then quite often clones are passed around with a name attatched which end up being something else.

the thing is, take dog breeds for example. you wouldnt just name a mongrel as a particular breed because it is just a cross. but in cannabis all you have to do is make a cross and hey presto you have a complely new strain. i reckon it should be like a pedigree where you will have to work a line to produce a stable strain.

this is why you can go on a seed site and theres a million different things with different names.

Landrace Revival !!!! Genetics are becoming to watered down, IMHO. Tell me region, type of cannabis, % if crossed, and no dumb names like green crack. Breeders stop ripping each other off and give props where due !! PEACE

yeah its a mess.. luckily breeders like ACE and cannabiogen have done some hard work on providing well selected landraces in seed form over the last decade and hopefully the hype name game will go by the way side.. its all got the same high thesedays.. i miss african highs and thai, nepali etc etc when grown long enough and cured nothing can beat them because they are so unique..

I totally agree with the OP. There must be hundreds, maybe thousands of names, more all time too. I also have heard of venders marketing elite names like sour diesel, for example, that are not from that strain at all.

Unfortunately, along with the mj acceptance by the general public, IMO we're going to see more and more "watered down" genetics...God willing. Making your own seeds seems to me to be the only real answer there, because even "landrace" ads will sometimes not really be that. So, even given "genetic drift" then, so what? The genetics will still be there. That's my just my $.02, but that wouldn't even buy you a stick of gum anymore. :tiphat:

Having pot go mainstream comes with negatives and this is one. Still much better scene for me personally than back in the 70's.

Names of strains are a must to identify a specific genotype.

If you want a Blueberry and order an unknown "sativa" than you wont get Blueberry ..will you now?
How would you know what flavors and effects or smells you will get from a "random" Indica or Sativa. What about hybrids that are 50/50 ~ ind/sat.
We need to know the parental lineage. I crossed a (Blueberry x SweetTooth)
to an ECSD. Hence the name "Sweet n 'Sour Blueberry".
Sweet = SweetTooth. Sour = ECSD. Blueberry = Blueberry. This is so people can know the parental lineage of the hybrid.

Names of marijuana strains are just as important as peoples names or the names of animals. You just cant say, "I caught a fish." What kind of fish? Get my point?
People who think names of strains are stupid dont know a thing about language or lineage.
Sn'SBB and Purps are two completly different genotypes. Like a shark is different than a largemouth bass. Both fish, but totally from a different genotype.

Clive, your right the names are pretty silly sometimes but you've got to call your new strain something. All of them now days are some kind of hybrid. Sativa come from all over the tropic's and indica's from further north (sorry Oz breeders). The landraces generally need some hybrid genes so they will do better indoors or in a different region.

I liked it when weed was named by where it was grown, this made me feel it I was catching the "vibe" of where it came from. The name made the herb more exotic.

Peace from Colombia!

I like growing mix seed packs and not knowing what I get. Hopefully it's dank and if so I can name it whatever I want

Used to hate it but now that we have isolated a few of the top clones it's nice to know exactly what you are getting every time.

"banana hammock"

its a cross of two terrible hermie bagseed parents with hallucinogenic pollen sacs..

a cross isnt a "strain" though... i think first should come quality and crucially reliability and then you can think about names for it..

in this world most things are sold of the back of a name, a brand,,, catchy words are the easiest way to make some one a "fan"(atic) and thus obsess over them.. so calling something "green crack" or "alien kush" or "chewbacca's bacci" (made that one up, i think) or whatever makes someone who doesnt even want anything like what it looks like suddenly want it.. most of them thesedays are just affie dominant crosses,, which is pretty boring... great for making hash though :rasta:

Would love to see a pic of someones "Wheelchair" cut if anybody has a pic. The cut we have is pretty identifiable with branching that is almost vertical along the main stalk, likes to grow caveman clubs for buds, very red haired, and short... Not a lot of smell in the bag or in flower, but a great taste and total knockout for pain. Do I have the real thing?

Thanks

Hindu Kush x Jock Horror :)
Thats funny shitt there. I saw the names begin popping like beans here when the holder memo hit the streets...the crack down has ended the name game. We had every kush known to man blue kush, green, purple red etc kush, stinky kush, Bill's,willies, etc kush. you freaking name it. There was a really great strain we were growing here in the 80's to 90's people called Gallatin Green I counted 9 different dispenseries claiming they had it. It lost vigor 10 years ago and ceased to exist. Every one was beaster shit except of course a few which were ok but probably just renamed commercial strains. Cheese x green crack. Green cheesy crack? sounds good eh? People are funny
