My thought was that your final product was a result of the expression of the plant, i.e. more or less plant oils, terpenes, and other substances. I say this based on the fact that a good friend who makes concentrates allllll the time will sometimes get different end results like a butter vs. shatter with the same methods but with different batches of plant material. Is this more to do with inconsistencies in his purging techniques or batch size? Has anyone else experienced different end results with the same technique?

When you say "same technique" or method, is your friend monitoring his temperature humidity etc?? These can have a factor on budder vs shatter, but the starting material is probably the largest factor.
ie, some strains might not have what it takes to go fully stable shatter because certain things are just not present on the plant material.
If you want to avoid budder and your doing large batches do your best to spread out the purge, make sure its very very thin and even that way tane has no way to get stuck, peace!
He does his purge in large (10"X8" or so) pyrex in a hot water bath. He does not use a thermometer to monitor temperature although always uses the same setting, what would your recommended temp be? Also I'm going to guess that because these are larger batches, the depth of the butane in the dish is more then what you would recommend. And when you say humidity, do you mean the humidity in the area where the purge is done? What would your recommended ambient humidity be? Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the tip on the temp. I might just have to buy him a dial stem thermometer and see what kind of temps he is hitting on the purge and see if we cant get a better final product with some fine tuning. Funny thing regarding the shatter vs. wax. I think due to some misinformation out there more people (at the dispensary) actually request the wax for some reason thinking that the shatter is less pure...time for some schooling I suppose.

What is the best size extraction tube? How much material at a time?

My personal preference is a tube that holds 10-15g at a time when they are almost full nug form crammed in.
But as it has been said in this thread by others, the size of the tube makes NO difference to them. I find this false.

I make it this way because that's what the people want. If they wanted shatter, I'd make that. Nothing I make has any spark and tastes/smells amazing. I'm happy and the customers are happy, that's all I could ever ask for. Also sc labs tested the wax in the pics and it came out at 86% active cannabinoids. What is most shatter tested at? Just curious....

SC Labs got some new testing device and now the results are insane. I just had my last run test back at 85.3 THC and 2.6 CBD.... I made that and I am calling bullshit on the results there is no way the starting material produced those results. lately I have been seeing a ridiculous number of 90%+ concentrates and I am having a difficult time believing the accuracy of the new equipment.

I have seen shatter hit 80+ percent many times. Honestly wax is nasty, if people want it, its because they are misinformed on what it is.
I have never seen any good wax.

^^ I am not sure if you have ever made wax yourself but I assure you it can be just as clean as any concrete or oleoresin out there but I have never seen an absolute budder up so you may be speaking about those.

This is actually a very good point, everytime I have ever done extraction it has come out shatter / sap / taffy texture, and always see through, I assume because I don't spray hard enough to be extracting waxes / plant matter.
To each their own in the end, I would pass ANY BHO for a quality fullmelt.
