Soil vs. Hydro

Hello all

I know that the topic has been up and go many times here. But I want to hear about your experience of going from soil to hydro.

I ran my first grow in a mixture of dwc and aero. I find that the yield is explosive. But some of the varieties I have, is very airy. And not as compact as in the ground.

What do you say?

:thank you:

I don't think I've ever done real "soil", but I currently have a custom RDWC, Sunshine #4, Coco, and Coco-hydroton going. I think I like the coco-hydroton best. All the fast growth from hydro and a little more forgiveness you get with a soill or soilless mix.

HYDRO is faster, higher yielding and easier to master. Soil works well but I have yet to see real 3lb plus plants in reasonable time frames in soil. In hydro I've done it and so have lot of other folks. Your airy buds were not the fault of hydroponics but that of system design problems and user error. Lean to run a hydro system and you will kill it.

Got a floor that stays cold year round? Preferably concrete?

DWC is absolutely amazing, without having to bother with chillers.

Cheapest hydro setup there is... make sure you use something effective like oxystones instead of cheapie air-stones. Huge difference. :D

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

After growing in soil for 15 years I am now on my first flood and drain hydro setup. I grew a lot of great herb in soil over the years and even thought there was no real difference between hydro and soil. I found that once I got serious about monitoring salt buildup and pH in my pots I could not stop salt buildup, pH change and nutrient lockout from occurring. I used good water, measured my nutrient strength, adjusted pH but the soil just kept holding onto excess nutrients. I realized the only way to get rid of salts for good was to use the right media and when I changed my nutrient solution the changes would be immediate. By the time I would realize there was a problem in soil it took forever to adjust it.
So flood and drain is great, my first run is going very well, better than most of my soil runs. Very happy I made the switch.

Hydro definitely! I was always a fan of the Walk before you Run theory, so I stuck to soil for years (peat based mix), always fighting pests, deficiencies, and other problems, then I tried hydro. Explosive growth, substantial yields, and huge ease of use! Now I run coco, but thats because Im perpetual and I didn't want to run 4 reservoirs, pumps, etc when I set up, but now I regret that! Hydro is by and large, IMO, far better than soil or coco.
