MYTHS

Let's put the plants in complete Darkness for 2-3 days before I put them in flower. Then they will flower much faster!

The academic community has made some forays into the world of compost tea (ugly expression for liquid microbial multiplications, that we are stuck with).

Unfortunately, many (most) of the studies have been incorrectly carried out. First they ran tests which counted only specific bacteria as a means of evalution, then they wisened up and included fungal counts. However both are done through plate cultures, applicable to soil/compost samples but not liquid cultures. They are making a culture from a culture. What they should be employing is direct microscopy and active counts.

The largest error, although, is that they have not even included the protozoan in the evaluations of the CT they have used for testing. As I've said more than thrice, this is the all important organism in CT, at least for nutrient cycling. It usually is in the form of a flagellate in CT.

There are several tests/studies run by the USDA and Ag Canada wherein it was 'discovered/concluded' that e-coli grows in ACT and that using molasses makes it multiply. Of course the knee jerk reaction was to stop using molasses in CT across agricultural circles.

If one examines these studies it becomes apparent that, not only did they not look for protozoa but the only way they could get e-coli to grow was by inoculating the CT with a non-pathogenic e-coli.

I had a student here a couple of weeks ago, just beginning to learn about microbiology and when I told her of the methods used she laughed and said 'so what they showed is that you can grow e-coli in a liquid if you feed it molasses' ...quick study. Why could these highly educated academics not see this?

1/ They have been taught to think in isolated patterns and have trouble looking at things as a whole.

2/ They started the test/study knowing what they wished to see.

There are actually a few good studies on CT done by academics. I've seen some good ones on using non-aerated CT for disease suppression and Harvard U is using ACT for their garden maintenance. The U of Arizona is in the middle of a similar trial using my 50 gallon brewer (bioreactor).

My favorite myths......

1. Cal-Mag Lockout

2. Water soluble Carbonates (see #1 as this is part of the same stupidity)

3. Flushing

4. Magic 'bulbs' promoted by Kid 'n Play at grow stores

Oh these are good ones  funny to.

Another good myth: organic produces smaller yields than chemicals.

Or how about this one, cannabis plants need daily attention to grow properly. :plant grow:

Here is a new one I've recently been unsuccessfully combating.

Too much Phosphorus without flushing (sigh) will cause your buds to spark and crackle and pop when smoked. Apparently It's science and if you think of the P in a book of matches you can then see exactly how it would happen in plants.

Why is this High P Snap Crackle Pop myth so prevalent among the cannabis forums?

Using google and searching variations like, "excess P makes my weed Snap Crackle Pop" etc. You can find multiple results.

I shouldn't have said a word.

I'm still such a rookie, but when I just think about these claims I want to pull my hair out!

Question everything about cannabis gardening history or you as a consumer of product and materials may never know if you're being plooked or not...but then again ignorance is truly bliss. What a gift that must be.

I pick-off the hydro store up the road on their prices on bulbs, SmartPots and especially a couple of the BioAg products - pure Humic acid and their pure Fulvic acid. BioAg must have really cut a deal with Sun Light Mfg. because a gallon of the Fulvic acid direct from BioAg is $65.00 per gallon and S&H is included, i.e. landed cost. Fair enough.

At The House of General Dysfunction, Disinformation & Delusion a 2.5 gallon is just under $90.00 - LMAO

Same thing on the SmartPots - specifically the big ones #50 - #100 which don't sell in any amount - fills out the shelf space to look robust. Retail Marketing 101

I buy these to use as worm bins but Junior Walker & the All Stars must think that I'm some big time grower because I went from 'good dude discount' to 'cash cow potential discount'

Cute little tykes - I've even given the usual staff pet names: Shrub, Can't Grow and OPH (Our Personal Hero)

Keep swingin' boys!

Hey Coot that's some funny shit. Dumb and dumber are usually behind the counter at my local grow store.

A good looking blonde came in the store the other day, between the drool and the incoherent speech, I don't think she was impressed. After having to wait 20 mins to check out I wasnt either.

not true, cranky old hippies only represent a tiny fraction of grow store customers...
LOL..

What I meant was if Cootz worked at a "Hydro Sto" he would be offering advice that would lead the customer to spend less, adopt sustainable practices and produce better products..... Damn cranky hippies.....

Side Rant

I expect other sections of ICMAG to be rifled with myths, but when your over here in the organic section (or the living soil section haha.) there is no excuse. The information is here. The folks with experience in "living soil" is here. Hell we even got the "lab rat" microbe guy here.
Just the other day below this thread some nutjob accused one of our own as spreading "myths" (verbatim!!!) for stating flushing living soil is a no no... Imagine that..
