tap water issue

S

SeaMaiden

We have both a whole house and RO/DI (I only fire that up for specific needs/reasons). I also save rainwater.

If you can afford to get a higher end RO system with a pressurizing pump before the filter assembly and get a filter system that has a backwash capability.

The RO membrane becomes much more efficient and will eventually pay for itself in the long run by reducing the amount of waste water that the system drains off as waste ( and you are paying for)

My budget for this is one or the other not both it also has to be 150$ or less. I wont have any issues finding either system at that price. The systems that cost 350$ are not a option for me. 99% sure it wont be a RO system. House filters dont have a waste line. They filter it all...Thats what I want..

Manual flush kits for RO systems are only 10$.. I have 2 other RO systems for my saltwater tanks. These are not at he grow site. I dont want leo fuking with my fish if they ever visit me. My tanks are over 15k to get to where they are now..My pride and joy:) I love my tanks....

I think it will help. this is well water. Its mostly sediment. Even if it doesn't I can add the DI resin later if needed. I dont want those ro units that waste all that water. I can use one of the housing for Resin instead of a sediment. and I wont have any waste water to worry about with this setup. I would have Sediment,Carbon,RO,DI...If I have to use a waste line with the RO I wont use it. I will test it with just DI. If its 200 or less im good..

Hmmm thats interesting....DI resin? Never heard of it. How much water volume can you process with that? I think red reign is right that the whole house filter will not lower your TDS much . It will make any other system you use last longer though. I have hard well water as well and I do not have water to waste in an RO system. Also I really do not have room for one especially since RO units work best with a water softner. I use rainwater and melted snow instead.

This may be a case of high concentration of carbonates or bicarbonates in the form of sodium, calcium, or magnesium. This would be accompanied by and increase in pH. Typically water with pH<8.0 will have a predominance of bicarbonates, however this will change to favor carbonates if pH becomes >8.0. Have you seen an increase in the pH of you tap water? Depending on the source water the concentration of bicarbonates can range from 50mg/L - 400mg/L in extreme cases. Bicarbonates register on a portable field EC/pH meter since they form bonds with cations Ca2+, Mg2+, and Na2+. :2cents:

I have had very high EC from well and spring water. In one case the raw spring water needed to be cut 3:1 with Reverse osmosis water for it to be suitable for irrigation purposes.
The water had 240mg/L of bicarbonates, 194mg/L (Ca), 46mg/L (Mg), 63mg/L (Na), as well as 650Mg/L (S), and a 7.5-8.0 pH. Total TDS 1200.

The PW dude took samples so I woulld assume if there is something really wrong they will let the manager know. Ph is fine 7.3

Would 7.3 be an increase from the previous value?

Just a suggestion but, you can request a report from your municipality if you are so inclined. Wouldn't hurt.

Best of luck.

You won't regret having RO water for you or the ladies. A great investment for yourself or the garden. I have a 6 stage RO unit that has double de-ionizing filters, the units spits out 4ppm or less. The house I rent also has a RO unit built in to the kitchen sink, I take that water and run it through my Brita filter next. Anyways consider it strike of luck you are being forced to purcahse a RO system.

Hammer, I've done the deionization resins, and I found that I had to go with RO/DI (6 stage, with a permeate pump). I use the 'waste' water for my landscape plants.

In any event, the DI resin will bind to some minerals that are driving up EC, but not all.

I'm going to suggest a fish tank filtration trick that I used to use extensively for my most sensitive South American fishes--filtration with peat moss. You won't get the EC down to zero, in fact I can see the EC readings getting absolutely whonky. But, assuming that the water you're receiving now is high in carbonates or bicarbonates (haven't seen that water report, they have to know what's in it, they can't just tell you that 1,000ppm is acceptable, that has to be qualified) then filtration through peat would result in a zero-waste option with naturally softened and acidified water.

Get a trashcan or few, however many you think you need. Set it up with a simple box filter, either something like a hang-on-tank power filter, a canister filter or even one of those super cheap, old style air-driven box filters, packed with peat moss. Depending on the turnover rate you can have water with acceptable parameters in a few hours or overnight.

im just going with the larger whole house units with 3 1 sediment and 2 DI resin.. Im not looking for 0ppm if I can get down to 200 its good. from what im reading the Resin will take out all or most of the TDS the higher the starting TDS is will shorten the life of the resin. People use RO to remove most of the TDS before it hits the resin so the resin will last a long time...I can always add a RO filter if the Resin does not last very long. I dont use much water. My 40g res will last me more then a week. Im not running hydro. I hand water. I use the res to mix my Organics keep the organics in suspension until I use it.

Here is the filter there 20$ ea so 60$ and the filter housing are 8.50$. I should be a able to put this together for 100-125$ depending on parts used..

so it looks like the water is settling out. Last night the water was 480 today its 220. I will check it in the morning.. I dont know if they changed anything they did not say anything to me. I did get a water test kit for the city those things are garbage. They use ph strips for PPM,PH,Chlorine. I tried it it was not even close to waht my meter read. This is good news the lower the starting PPM the longer the DI resin will last..

They're using strips? Are you kidding?

How are you liking the weather today? We woke up and looked out the bedroom sliding doors to see pines swaying several feet. Surprisingly, we still have power.

Update: I got my Blue lab back. They replaced it with a new one. I got the v2 model. It has a diferant firmware it can do both 500/700 scale V1 did not have that it only did 500 scale. The front face has a diferant feel to it. V1 all the buttons where cracked this must have been a design flaw it should have a waterproof face.

After getting it all cleaned and cal the city water is at 100ppm:).. Now I know when they switch I need to let it settle a few weeks before I use it. Im sure when they switch it back to the treatment water it will spike again. I appeiate all the help with this.

Peace
