Question to Hydro guys

How come I rarely( i know of a few on here) see Rockwool grows documented? I know several outside of the internets that use Hugo's to great success.

I know two folks that just use the Hugos and thats it. With great success.

Is it just an older style method that folks have just evolved out of due to methods they feel are better?

I enjoy reading and learning about all mediums, so this is just a straight up question. Wait did I ask it?

A few reasons I can think of is it's prone to algae growth, it's only good for one run which makes it expensive/wasteful. I am sure there are also some more practical reasons why most prefer to use hydroton or coco but I will wait for someone else to come along and enlighten me.

Harmless green algae, certainly not a legit reason 'Not' to use RW, if you use a cover(vented etc) it doesnt appear:

I see alot of people trying it out & alot that cant get to grips with it, prolly more of a reason from what ive seen. I still see plenty peeps using it though. its clean & i find it simple to use esp running NFT. its certainly 'Big' in indoor commercial ag/ops.

some usefull info here:http://www.grodan.com/

Some use rock and lava chips instead since they drain real well real fast so not to promote root rot and other assorted problems...

Personally, my favorite hydro is mediumless. Just hanging plants over a dwc tub... clean up is SOOOOO easy. Soon as you start having to think about having a res chiller, I start thinking about drip through hydroton. LOL

Rockwool makes me itch.

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

I focus on minimizing the grow expense. Grow mediums can be one of the biggest. You don't need any RW/S2G (neither of which is recyclable)... beyond a small starter cube for seeds, and I cut those in half.

Lava rock provides the ideal root environment. It drains fast, while capturing a small amount of nutes to feed between flood cycles. I don't even 'flood' in the conventional sense. I use low pressure mist heads from the top. Each 1G Air Pot uses less than 3 ounces er 'flood', so I save a ton on nutrients, too.

Come check out my thread to see it in action

I greww with hugo blocks for years in a flood table. Why did I get away from it? A few reasons:

1) at $3.50 they are expensive to have to buy every run
2) security risk having to go and buy lots of them

but the main reason I will never use them again

3) A pain in the muthafuggin ass to get rid of. Even after trying to dry them out and compact them down, its always a security risk trying to get rid of them.

I switched to coco in 1g pots. I can reuse 80% of the coco each run, its WAAAY cheaper, and now I can just shake out the roots, dry them out, and toss them in the bushes or trees to quickly decompose. No security risk at all.

This is my first grow with the Hugo 6x6x6 I love them, I have always grown in rockwool 4x4x4's. I never gave a damn about the algae if anything I’ve always noticed as soon as the cubes get a green tint to them early growth explodes in the plant and a good healthy plant canopy the grow table shouldn’t even be getting that much light. Got no problem with disposal properly bagged it raises no suspicion and if somebody is checking your trash you got bigger problems going on Ha-ha.
Sometimes when I hang out here in the forum during a grow I’m surprised at the photos and what people constitute as a healthy plant sometimes I think its a whole lot of science and shitty plants maybe I need to learn more, but I’m not motivated too as long as my closet keeps producing like it does. I'm very very lazy so almost anything other than an
ebb & flow hydro table with some rockwool blocks is just too much bullshit to deal with.

Just an opinion because I do also see some real miraculous grows here too using Bubbles or Coir,, but ME I just stick to my old reliable ways never lost or ruined a crop yet and grow after grow goes just as expected.

You ever do the, dump the hugos in a bucket full of water and let them break down? Ive been told that too, but I imagine that aftermath is PITA.

Hello All,
me I like DWC.No media to purchase or replace or dispose of,no extra cost.DWC is pretty easy for me,mix up some nutes in water, add plants and light and bada bing bada boom, growth lol.
I used to use hydroton to veg and flower in and rockwool to clone in.Not any more tho.I use neoprene collars I made,2 inch net pots, and dwc.The only things I have to purchase is general hydroponics flora 3 part nutes, and grow my cab.
I clone in water, with collars made to fit the holes in the cloner.
I used to try ebb and flow table, and I made a 2 ltr ebb and flow system from pvc pipe.I have grown in soil A LOT,but I am a firm believer in dwc, drain my leftovers to the plants outside no disposal worries.
So what ever works for you best, what are you willing to dedicate time wise to and others things to consider.
Best of luck to ya and Happy Growing.

Have you visited the Grodan Website ?

Go to - grodan101.com watch the videos and learn about the characteristics of the product direct from the source and by-pass all the B.S. ya read about it in forums regarding pH, retention and preparation, get the facts straight from the manufacturer and use as described then apply what we learn from others in their experiences and RW will never fail ya.

Course now that’s just an opinion other than my very first 3 grows with a potting soil mixture, I have used Rockwool so my opinion may be inaccurate or biased

Im with yea. What you got going is pretty much exactly like my boys. Are you him? lol But I will check the site. I was just curious to why I dont see many hugo cube grows nowadays. My buddies have been 12 plus years strong with em.

Makes me wonder, because these two guys dont do the online forum thing. I just wonder if consumerism and all the bullshit has online folks cornered, or rather by the nuts, as some folks literally live online it feels like. When talking to my two buddies, they are very " out of it" when it comes to the million gimmicks/brands of nutes. Those two guys have thrived very well with exactly what they do, very well lol. Just thinking outloud.

as far as hugo blocks go I dont use them as I dont veg that long & usually got to flower if not right away from clone than 2 weeks most. I do use 4" square rockwool cubes 100%. Although I got to say I don't see a whole lot of people growing with rockwool by itself on this forum too much. I think alot more people rather do DWC or aero since it mostly water they got to deal with where with rockwool you still have to dispose of it.

i grow useing rockwool , its proply the most easy dummy proof medium there is ! with dwc your a few degrees away from root rot , or you have to change the water , and plus the extra energy you need to run the bubbler !! i know its nothing really but if your growing 40 plants .................. it add's up

picture.php

i grow in buckets with no run off no nothing just granulated rockwool in a bucket , and a old bit of black/white plastic to stop algae ,
