Building a box from scratch...help please

I have a goal of getting 1 oz per harvest of the very best buds you can grow. Since I have a friend who is a carpenter, I can build the box from scratch. But, I want to get it right the first time. I was thinking about building a 15x15" box that's 22" tall and doing 1 plant under a 50 watt hps.....I will either scrog it, or LST the hell out of it. Does this sound like it will work out, and will a single high airflow computer fan (110 cfm) be able to vent said box through a DIY carbon filter effectively?

i would not reccomend a pc fan for anything bigger than a sq ft box with cfls.
ive never used hps but i hear it is hotter than cfls

probably not man, you say its high airflow but those things really dont blow that much air. You're model could but my experience with the ones i had, two of them couldnt even do a good job with cfls. You can do what you please but i would reccomend going to home depot/lowes and buying a bathroom exhaust fan. they start out around $15 and go up from there. i will say though the cheap ones are a little noisy so you could buy a more expensive one or hope you filter muffles the sound.

just go to the bathroom section and walk up and down the aisles, you will find it. or you could always ask someone who works there. or look it up on there website before you go there...

back to the Pc fans for a second... so are you saying that a regular pc fan wouldn't work, but what about one of these ultra high airflow fans? would this really not be enough to vent a 50 watt hps?

or would it be too much airflow for a carbon filter to be effective?

I just looked on newegg and a 120 mm fan pumps around 70 cfm, but of course the more they push, the louder they are, about 30 db's I think it was in that case. There's a range, so you can balance it out. Interesting idea, I am trying to figure out a similar situation for veg and clones, but had not considered PC case fans. I am ignorant about how you would go about powering that, so if you go that route please mention how that part is done.

I'd like to see the pc fan that could cool a small box with a 50 hps bulb in it. Seriously.

I'm pretty ignorant about wiring stuff too...I wish there was a more simple way to go about this....every discussion or guide that I have seen on such things seems to jump around too much or assume you already know certain things. Same goes for most other aspects of grow box construction. But with that said, I know it's in theory easy to wire a wall plug to a fan and a hps light, just have to figure out how to do it without killing myself.

Seems like we have to figure out the right balance between fan power, adequate exhaust, but not too much exhaust so as to reduce the effectiveness of a carbon filter. Somewhat frustrating because I would hate to build a box and then have to backtrack.

god i wish i could edit posts.. anyway i thought about using a PC case, but I don't like the dimensions...i'd rather have something square

I cant comment on the effectiveness of that fan, having never used it. But I can say this, from my assumption you're growing micro so you can be stealth (as most of us are) i dont think that Pc fan would be quiet enough for a stealth grow. that seemed to be louder than my bathroom fan i have in my cab. I can also say that the CFM given on PC fans are often bullshit while on a bathroom fan it is accurate. I can almost assure you that my 50cfm bathroom fan probably would do a better job exhausting then that pc fan. I'm not trying to put you down in any way simply trying to give you some insight from my experience. I once thought I could use PC fans too but i was wrong (atleast with the models i used)

This is not me telling you, you cant exhaust using a pc fan, you may just have a hard time.
I say either get a smaller box or a bathroom fan. From the looks of the PC fan you could get a silent bathrooom fan for cheaper.

But what do i know? LOL
Anymore questions and I'd be happy to help.

Theres a PC fan wiring guide somehwere around here. Lemme see if i can find it for you.

It's extremely simple.

Best way is to try, i consider doing rather then reading the best way to learn. Because if you give up at the first fail you probably wont come far. Time and effort will take you there, get started somehow and build from there. Nothing wrong in failing see it as one speedbump in a long journey to whatever your goal is. Hope this cheers you up because you wont stop learning new things, errors are there to solve. Best of luck in the future! :)

Yea a delta pc fan could definitely exhaust that cab properly. Most delta fans come with just bare wires.

I am looking at this Delta PFB1212UHE (youtube it). 252 cfm with a static pressure around 36!!!! I am thinking that this thing could easily vent a 70 watt hps box while at the same time PUSHING (not pulling) the exhaust through a 2 or 3 inch layer of carbon for extreme odor control? Of course the sacrifice you make for such a beast of a fan is the very high noise level, which is far less of a concern for me than the smell control...it's an easy choice as long as this works like I think it will?

If I am right on this, the next phase will be figuring out how to properly seal the fan on the wooden box, since I am making it from scratch with the help of a friend I can have it cut any way I want it but I need to figure out how, or if it would be better to attach the fan directly to the box or if there is some type of adapter piece that would secure it better?
