I see a nice comparison for air-cooled hoods, but is there a similar comparison for open air reflectors?

Thanks,

I don't know about a comparison, but I do love my vertizontal parabolics.

Frank,

I'm looking to grow more types for my use, rather than volume. So the plants won't become trees, as I just don't want all that. Smaller plants more frequently. I guess that helps me for light penetration.

Other than that, I guess a 4x4 area

rrog if you are using a 1000w hid my favorite would be a large adjust a wing or perhaps a supernova reflector they both have minimal hot spots and cover a 4'x4' area fairly evenly

Was looking at the blockbuster 6 and take the glass out. Had a pretty good test rating on greners. I will look at those two, Frank. Thanks!

They sell non air cooled blockbusters without the glass.
Why not just go bare bulb vertical?
Id do it but Im affraid of the bulbs exploding or burning my bald head on the bulb.
Im not sure if its any safer with the glass if a bulb explodes though

Call me a romantic, but I like the light on top and be able to walk around the plants. Vertical would not be as pleasant. I am not looking for volume.

The other problem with vertical is you can't see anything after spending any time in the room with the lights on.

I agree with Frank...I'm a HUGE Adjust-A-Wing fan!! I run the medium with a 600w HPS. You can adjust it tight for max penetration, or run it in the more flat position for larger footprint. I find I can cover a full 5'x4' area. Just point a fan toward the bulb it blows the heat straight away without any problem.

How big a difference do these values really mean? http://www.greners.com/reflector-test.html

The large adjust a wing wasn't as good as the medium, but the adjustability you find handy.

Do you guys use the super spreaders?

I definitely find the adjustability useful. I don't change it that often. When they're small I tighten it up. As they grow and go through stretch I spread it out and leave it there.

I DON'T use the super spreader!! As much as I love the reflector...I hate the ss! I have it but don't use it, I notice definite shadows under the bulb. Without it it is notably brighter directly under the bulb (duh).

I still find I can lower the light to 12-15" without a problem. Even that low there's not a problem with heat. I kinda treat it like the vertical concept and train a small honeywell fan directly at the tip of the bulb. It's about 3' away, but works just fine.

The super spreader is great if you have low ceilings. Or just want to drop the canopy top temp by about 6 degrees. I like the adjustawing, but am digging the gavita these days. Still using both.

I agree. I tried vert once, the yields were nice but the training was a pain and indeed, looking at your plants is more than half the fun of growing, and if you can't do that freely no more... It's not as fun :/

I also got an Adjust-a-wing after that and never looked back.
