a sweet farewell my dearest

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Hostess Brands -- the maker of such iconic baked goods as Twinkies, Drake's Devil Dogs and Wonder Bread -- announced Friday that it is asking a federal bankruptcy court for permission to close its operations, blaming a strike by bakers protesting a new contract imposed on them.

Hostess' nearly 18,500 workers will lose their jobs as the company shuts 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers nationwide, as well as 570 outlet stores. The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union represents about 5,000 Hostess employees.

"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," said CEO Gregory Rayburn in a statement.

Hostess will move to sell its assets to the highest bidder. That could mean new life for some of its most popular products, which could be scooped up at auction and attached to products from other companies.

A letter that Hostess sent to its network of stores that carry its product said it expects "there will be great interest in our brands." But it said it could not give a time frame for when the sales would take place and when its products would be available again.

But even if those brands are bought and restarted, the Hostess workers will not get their jobs back.

a moment of silence please :badday:

I have a Twinkie that I found in a cupboard of a house I was renting. I found it 7 years ago it was already hard as a rock, but still looked like new. No mold or anything makes you wonder what the hell they were made from. I still have it.

The reason Twinkies last so long is they are not food. Insects and mold won't even touch them. Do you know what that white "creme" is in the middle? It's lard. What's lard? Pig fat!
So when you eat anything with white creme in it, you are eating pig fat with sugar.

Twinkie lovers have hope! Given the unlimited shelf life of the beloved Twinkie (not sure if Twinkie's brethren in the Hostess stable exhibit similar longevity), and the likely infrequent ingestion of these sweet spongy....things...maybe once a year or so...just get your ass out to the local supermarket and pick up a few dozen. You'll be set for decades.

RIP Twinkie and Wonder Bread.

I feel terrible for the 18,000 people that no longer have jobs right before the holiday season.Much light and love to those people.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of stoners suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

Same as McDonalds....

I saw a documentary where a guy left a cheeseburger in his jacket pocket one time.
He forgot about the burger and hung his jacket up in a closet, fast forward 9-10 months later he went to put on the jacket, and he found the cheeseburger in the pocket.
It looked good? With no mould? He smelt it, and it smelt good? :biglaugh:

the major brands will likely be sold off and live again soon enough, but i feel really bad for all the employees, who in trying to earn a fair wage, ended up losing their jobs.

i know the feeling of being underpaid, a lot of us do. this economy is fucked making the rich richer and poor poorer.

around my parts, they often dont sell my favorite things.

one example, my favorite liquorice, sold it for awhile, ate alot of it, got some worries by others for my health about it. then they stopped selling it (that and saltines sniff!)

bah.

years later, they started selling the liquorice again.

but now at vastly inflated prices, because now its considered a sort of health food liquorice. (funnily..)

(im usually 10-20 years ahead of my time, it can be a pain in the butt.)

Good riddance, those processed snacks should be considered poison not food.
