Does size matter?

Does water pump size matter?,for example, does the gph rating, have anything to do with the pressure of the water.will a pump thats too big, gush water through the dripper lines, how do you size the pump and your grow together?

or is the size of the pump only important when talking about how many vertical feet it can push water?

basically,i have this pump,

and im only watering 20-25 plants in coco coir, using 1/4in lines as the dripper.it is rated at:

WaterPOWER 85
grey_arrow.png
AC 120V, 85 Watts, 0.7 amps
grey_arrow.png
792 GPH, Max Head Height 10 ft

obviosly,its a pretty strong pump,atleast in hydroponic terms,10ft max head,and 85 watts,most pumps i saw were like 3-4ft head,and ~20 watts...

so being that my uses for it are limited, how would i go about using this, without flooding my closet lol.or does that not matter,

and my seconds question is,my pump came with 1inch fitting,do i need to use a 1in main line,or can i just buy an adapted,to use with a 1/2in line?

which is better,a 1/2 or 1in main line...then using 1/4 lines to water the actual plants?

:thank you:

In case the pump is too big.. run a tee after the pump outlet... put a valve on the part of the tee that recirculates in the res...adjust valve to dial in the pressure you want

If you use pressure compensating drippers you can run the lines at different lengths

ok,a new question guys...im having a hard time finding 1in vinyl tubing to use as my main line...

my pump has the outler of 1"..

so can i still use a 1/2" or 3/4" line..and just stretch it to fit on the 1" opening?

bascially, can anybody help me design my drip system,it would be easier if my pump came with 1/2 fitting,as is the most common that iv seen, but it came with a 1in fitting...so what should i do?

and can i use a standard green garden hose as my main feed line?a garden hose is 1" right?does it contain toxins in the rubber that can harm plants?,can i just poke holes in the garden hose, and attach the 1/4 fittings?

so pretty much, since my pump is 1"..do i HAVE to use a 1in" line and end-cap..or can i use 1/2 line and end-cap to create pressure?maybe by heating the tubing first, then stretching it?

please im soo lost...

Take the pump with you to homedepot or lowes & get a fitting for the outlet on the pump so you can run 1/2 " or 3/4 " tubing for your main line .I'm sure you'll find something there that will work . most pumps when new come with different fittings in the box for different size lines . i guess yours didn't ?

85gph seems kinda small for that many plants . i'm using a 264 gph pump in each rez ... feeding 6 to 12 plants per rez . 1/2" main line & 1/4" lines to drip stakes .

its 792 GPH...85 is the model number..its a pretty strong pump from what iv gathered,as most smaller pumps come standard with 1/2 fittings...and the big heavy duty ones come with 1" standard fittings..it has a max head of ~10ft.

id take it to homedepot, but i dont wanna stand out...so what you guys think?can i use the garden hose?what are my options..

i dont have a ton of cash to build a pvc type manifold, plus ill only be doing one or two runs,so im looking for a quick, cheap, temporary type setup, using flexible tubing, not pvc piping
