How to Choose a Mother plant

Hey Guys,

Looking at picking up some Critical Mass from Mr. Nice and wanted to see what type of characteristics you look for in choosing a mother plant. I assume speed of growth, final weight, potency. Any suggestions for hunting for mum?

I am interested in hearing from some of the breeders and old school growers on this one. I just selected a plant based on phenotype and smell which is probably not scientific enough. I seeded all of the females I have going as they all have interesting characteristics, but there is the "ONE". I guess I am curious to see what other traits I could be using without having smoked any of the candidates.

In my opinion, you can't pick a "keeper" mother plant until you have finished the grow and smoked the fruit of your labor. Once you have sampled them, there is always one that sticks out above the rest as the one you want (of course hoping you didn't get a bunk round)

Whenever I get a new clone from a friend I always turn that one into a mother to cut clones off but there is no deciding if it's going to stick around until I have flowered her out. Sometimes it's a winner, other times I just end up cutting it down after the test nugs not being up to my standards. Yes, you will end up wasting some time and space but that's part of the game.

Ive never kept a mother. Theres really only one strain I wish I would have kept. Id assume thats how you pick out a mother. Once you got a girl like that you dont let her get away! I still think about her all the time damn it!

Speed of growth, amount of lateral branching, hollow stems, heavy smells on stem rub, root growth, speed at which water is used, ability to withstand drought and heat stress....how quickly it uses nutrients (ie heavy or light feeder)...heavy double serrations on the fan leaves, internode spacing.

All of these things can be indicators of a good plant - during flower there are more obvious indications, such as resin field density and the size of the glandular trichome, length of trichome stalk, leaf to calyx ratio, flower density (the densest is not always the best as some thicker flowers tend to suffer from bud rot). Variance between smell on the plant and smell of the actual resin glands themselves - indicating higher terepene levels...

This list can go on and on and on .... especially when you begin isolating particular traits within a given strain / seed line and are hunting for specific known indicators...

*edit* Notice I didn't even mention final yield....lol....quality over quantity - ALWAYS. :joint:

But I hope this is at least of some help...

Out of curiosity, what strain was it?

Thanks Frank. That gives me a good basis to start with. I have only grow sativa dominant plants up till now and wanted to switch to a heavy yeilding indica.

I like to keep a mother. just makes things easier. All your plants are identical. Even when I start from seed I never flip that plant. I will take a cutting and then flip the cutting.

I wish I knew. I bought 12 clones from a dispensary that were all supposed to be sour d. They turned out to be orignal sour d/cc but thats another story... 2 of the clones were actually some lemon fuel OG.
I asked the dispensary and even brought a sample the next time I went. They tried to tell me it was Madman OG, but Madman Og genetics sound nothing like it. Plus he told me Madman OG was short and this strain was taller than my Original Sour D.
They carry a bunch of Cali Connection gear there. It could have been Deadhead or Tahoe going by memory of the clones they carry that would lean towards lemon fuel. They also had Larry clones but this strain went 10 weeks, so Im kinda ruling Larry out.
Edit: I got my CC beans in the mail today and the description on the pack of Larry is the same as the Tahoe 60-68 days. The description on their site is 8 weeks.
Ive tried them all at dispensaries and nothing even comes anywhere near close though...lol
I have some cc gear on the way and hope to end up with that same pheno somehow. Im also going clone hunting at the same shop.
This weed was the most resinous, stinky, crystal coated, amazing tasting weed and it didnt even last long enough for me to fully dry or even cure it. I took the last hit and the jar was 69% humidity.

You see the powder in that jar? Just touching this herb would knock off bong loads full of trichs!
