Airline Executive: 'Seat Belts Don't Matter'

Seatbelts on planes are pointless, and passengers should be able to buy
standing-room-only tickets, according to Michael O'Leary Chief Exec of
Irish airlines Ryanair

"If there ever was a crash on an aircraft, God forbid, a seatbelt won't
save you." O'Leary told The Telegraph. "Seatbelts don't matter."

O'Leary, of course, has suggested charging to use airplane lavatories.
His seatbelt comments tie into his stated desire to remove the last 10
rows of seats in airplanes to create a standing section.

While seatbelts probably won't help in a major crash, they can make a difference in turbulence, rough landings and minor mishaps.

O'Leary addressed this argument, saying: "We're not talking about areas of huge turbulence around Europe" and "We don't have heavy landings anymore."
Uh huh.

Whats next disclosure that passenger oxygen masks are meant to muffle screams

I wish I was in an industry with such organised collusion with the ability to fleece its customers regardless of what they think of the service.

No choice but to fly the cream of the crap, if you are not willing to pay for first class.

Yup.

I fly chartered/private. Costs more, but totally worth it.

Flying commercial is like getting a rough handjob from a nasty girl with no lube. You get there, but you don't want to admit you actually did it.

I'd pay more for a flight that had no children and no sick people... With or without seat belts... And a medicating area, even if only flying over the green states... ;-)

What an incredulous statment: "If there ever was a crash on an aircraft, God forbid, a seatbelt won't save you."

I beg to differ!

It appears he wants to make more money at the expense of traveler safety.

Boooo O'Leary! Stop with the avarice!

his idea is not without merit. reduce fares accordingly.

especially around europe where flights would be much shorter. some kind of tether to retain your feet during turbulence could manifest.

not much help on OS flights or long jaunts, and then there're already trains...

right...

fucking twat.

Yall do know that Ryanair is a company that specializes in this sort of thing? That is, finding little ways to cut costs and their service to the most basic level, so that people will have the option to fly extremely cheaply? You do know this company has legions of loyal followers who love this company for this exact reason?

Try doing some fucking research and at least know what the hell's going on before you start calling people names. If you dont like the service don't use it, it's that simple. I happen to agree that being strapped in a seat doesn't make fuck all of a difference in a real plane crash, so whats the harm in letting some people stand in the back of the plane, at their own risk?

Thank you!

And if the rest of you clowns bothered to even read you'd notice that he makes this suggestion with the standing room seats starting at $1. Seats start at $25. Pretty great option if you can't afford anything else....

about 20 years ago, this guy that owned a baseball team was flying in american airlines, he was a big dude back then, and requested a seatbelt extention; they told him to wait after take off; minutes later after take off, hardcore turbulence starts, strong enough to send a 200 kg plus guy flying through the plane and crashing his head against the ceiling of the plane several times... the man can't walk or use his arms anymore; he is a friend's father, american airline had to pay them a few millions...

so yeah, anyone who thinks seatbelts are useless is an idiot, period.

I would gladly pay regular price for a standing room only ticket. Regular airline seats seem like they're made for small children. I just don't fit into one, and I'm not fat at all. Right now I have two choices. I could buy a first class ticket at 5 times the price, or I could drive. I usually just drive.

I think the seat belts are for protection during turbulence, by the way. Of course they won't help you in most airline crashes. I'll take my changes with turbulence if I can buy a cheap standing room ticket.
