So sorry to see SM's news, not good.

I caught 3 robbers on 07 Sept, had a few close calls since here and my next door neighbour had his last couple of plants saved 3 days ago, all entirely thanks to dogs. Previously plants and entire crops have been stolen.

Props entirely to to a Rottie, a Red Nose, 3x 14 month old Red Nose x Rottie, and another sister of the Red Nose x Rotties who lives next door, last spotted on video chasing a rather frightened Moroccan chappie out of the [fenced] garden.

All this security talk and the most important thing has been left out, ARM YOURSELF!!!! That is the only way to guarantee safety. I know that is controversial but tell me a better way and I will listen.

Sad but true, something I learned from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, always have a tool, weapon, ready, in a known place, in every room you have, that way, when it does go off, you can get something useful, quickly. 2 years ago my friend P got jumped at 3am down in the garden in the middle of a thunderstorm, just as a gang were clearing out the whole crop. Attacked with an iron bar, the Orange loping saw we had put just inside the tent for just this reason proved to be a crucial point in the event...

Stay safe people.

I will have to change how I do things, which is why I'm leaning more towards growing and storing elsewhere (at least outbuildings). I'm just not the sort of person who answers the door carrying a weapon, and that may have been my only chance. I had my pepper spray maybe 10' from the front door. Too far to do me any good. I never once thought about having something in every room. I did happen to have scissors near where I was put during the robbery, but I didn't DARE try to get them, I'd been thumped hard enough.

Also, folks have to remember that not all cannabis growers are fully able-bodied people. I've got some serious hitches in my giddy-up. I can't run anymore, literally, and am far weaker than I was even 10 years ago thanks to the back injury. I don't want to fight anyone, if they want the weed that badly, THEY CAN HAVE IT.

Madjag, that's a gorgeous dog, just gorgeous.

It's a good thing I love the smell of puppies, yeah? Yeah. Just got to find that right dog, and move forward.

i have a red nose Pit! awesome linage. haven't fixed her, but have not breed her either. she is just now hitting her 3rd heat. shes ready to rip.

But honestly, she is the FASTEST, highest jumping, very easy to train to protect you... As they are naturally that way. all around i recommend some pit bulls. Great Companions, even greater fighters. no one could out run my dog.

Edit: also get a female ;). i just posted this, and some doors shut in a car. my dog sensed something and started growling. Never barks she is quite as hell, so when she growls, i know she senses something within a 50 feet radius.

also people are scared of them for some reason! :D good deterrent.

Do you know who it is? and u most likely will need to find another grow spot. If you are legal in California. you can actually make a police report, and any evidence. Although i rather deal with shit myself. but i dont want to end up in jail either for someone else's stupidity.
My dog is very likely a pit-Rhodesian ridgeback mix, incredibly strong and athletic, easily closing in on 100lbs, and incredibly useless. Yeah sure, she scares the hell out of people, but not the right people. And she will never lay a tooth upon human flesh, I've trained her on that stuff that well.

The dog was unstable when I got her. I had to work on building up her confidence, while ratcheting back her dominance. She is just *not* naturally protective of humans, at least not after having three different owners from so early on in her life. I mean, she's been ours since we got her back in '05, but she'd had two prior before that. She has no allegiance now. Except to cats. That dog protects our cats like nobody's business.

We think we know who it is, but we're not certain. I didn't know the man who assaulted me. The police were called, at least two agencies responded. The local undersheriff has actually sent his condolences and thoughts, which feels good and is encouraging. They miscounted my stumps, but they said I'm still well within numbers so no big deal there.

I'm still concerned that whoever it was will be targeting others, which really scares me. I don't want anyone killed. It's difficult enough being unpopular with your neighbors who don't like weed, ya know?

Like Tom Said. A dog with the Tail UP looking around. You gotta teach um that stuff. Do perimeter checks. waking up in the middle of the night going. WHATS THAT, and have your dog run outside. And u go out too. Always say good girl/boy . etc. Training a guard dog, without hurting anyone you dont want them to hurt is not that hard. Like Tom said again. I can call off my Dogs, but i can not call of my Bullet. That was a great way of putting it. Even if you have to keep the dog in a Kennel near the grow... At least he barks to warn you to get up! Also ask what your legal options are as for self defense in a situation like this. Record it if you can.... with or without him knowing..

Best of luck i am so sorry this happen. You are a good person and do not deserve it. I hope you find out who it is. And i also hope it has nothing to do with online. Peace!

The bean bag you see the cops throwing on the ground at the end of a job well done is like taking the lid off the steam pot, releasing pressure. Certain breeds (bully's for one) mostly work in defense drive, not prey, no release, almost impossible to train because of that, gang-bangers don't realize all of those dogs who were worth snot and bit a man (civil dogs, as the french might say) were culled from the litter like 200 years back, you got the idea EU, herding dogs not touched by the akc and whose character mattered on the way to market, like heir dobermans dogs and belgian malinois, the rottweiler, and the pohranicni straze gsd from czech border patrol lines. Then smoke them. A puppy who you roll over to their back and doesn't fight his/her ass off should be passed over right away, he/she will require balls to do what you're asking. Pinch in between their toes their webbing until they yelp and see how fast they forgive you with licks, all these things add up. Many tests, I am a big fan of genetics, we need to get that right before we can enter into this nurturing nonsense, I want a bad-ass dog, if I expect he/she to really protect me. An alarm dog is a whole different matter, a lil terrier should do, maybe even a bag/pile of nerves who'd turn on us in a second like a trader, the one who doesn't rush to greet us but us rather aloof in the back of the kennel upon approach. A real dog though, needs to have more.

A pitty is like a great white shark... Dress up like a seal in a wetsuit, dive for abalone, and they'll eat you. Little kid runs across the lawn, and finds himself dead, a disgraceful excuse for a dog. I swear, dumb as snot. The only thing dumber than a pit is their keeper, lol. Sorry, but it must be said.

Then you dont know pits. Sorry it must be said. :) one of the smartest breeds. And its comments like that, which continue the hate against the breed. Some people have had bad experiences. But i know many who have had bad experiences with other breeds too. Its all about the owner and if you know how to train a dog.

hi tom how are u bud.ive been reading ur posts and growing ur deep chunk and haze for years now thanks for offering these fine genetics.the reason im sending this message is because i need help understanding organics better and home brewed teas and how to use hortinet.ive only grown indoors but next year im taking the plunge into outdoors and im going to try my hardest to achieve 10pounders..lol im not sure i can do it but i will try i just need u to send me in the right direction.also i know u use smartpots but i wanted to put directly in the ground.how big should my holes be?and is it possible to use the soil from my land and add everything else u recommend in outdoors thread or should i just buy the bags of black and gold?please help me prepare and point me to any good books that will truthfully help me.after seeing u and others do so great in the outdoors im convinced thats where im going.thanks in advance...

Hi SP,

There are many thoughts on what is important with organics and our understanding of them. One thought, what I refer to as the bandaid fix, is to go straight to the end product, humus, via worm castings and etc, another thought (one I happen to concur with) is that we want fireworks going off, and not only the end product, but the rate of which we're producing it, all matters. I believe that when yin and yang collide be it salt n vinegar or sugar n lime, good things happen from the energy that is harnessed via chemical reaction. It really is a book and I can not answer that in one post. I do however advise you to view some of the folks' thoughts in the organic soil forum, to at least gain a handle on the former view.

My best advice is to have giant holes if you want giant plants. The ground is fine, breathing containers are a bit better because the sides are also like an extension of the top breathing 12inches of soil... A 6 ft wide breathing container is like an 8ft wide hole in the ground.

I have used hardwood compost in my neighborhood for many decades, but stay away from conifers. I like to go into the woods, rake off the top layer of manzanita, madrone, oak, etc, and get to that rotting black stuff underneath with white fungi everywhere as appose to importing problems from outa town, it is very good filler to be sure, it and chicken shit and native dirt has gotten me through many a year, it's fine and it works, but requires more work if less money.

There has never been a single book we can get all of this from unfortunately, nor is there one on the horizon that I know of. Want to grow pot? Go out there, and get your ass kicked until you get it right like everybody else, I am afraid. I still get my ass kicked, it's how we learn, it's kinda even why we do it. -T

As far as hortinet the best solution ime is some kind of hybrid one, a rigid cage inside of netting as shown in this thread. But if was a decision between affording bigger holes or ANY of this other, I'd go with bigger holes, every time, tea, what's that, haven't used it in years, it's for suckers with small holes :D

you're just now learning about dogs, what drives them, how to select them, and that pits who bit man (not counting children, disgusting) were culled from the litter 2 centuries ago. I am an equal opportunity individual, I am not some redneck. But no, if you think for a second that a pit is a decent PPD, you're lost little girl, plain and simple - snoopclowns.

Like uncle ben you've read some lame book, and now you're gunna tell me how it is. Well, sharpen that blade and tell me then, there'll be no religion here, and that's what it takes for a real dog man to even glance at a pitty.

you might know a thing or two about growing large plants, but you dont know shit about dogs/pits obviously.

that statement makes you look dumb as snot in my book.

We can turn it into a dog thread for a second if you guys want, I am just as comfortable in that realm, are you? Or will you just keep throwing ignorant jabs. Pits are all defense drive, and a protection dog must be balanced in prey and defense or they are a bitch to train. None of you guys have a clue as to what I am talking about do you?
