Small scale vert questions (400w)

Hello vert growers. I've been poking around the vert section here and have seen sense that horizontal growing just isn't cutting it. With electricity not being the cheapest it just makes more sense to get the most out of every watt of electricity used.

I want to find out if it is feasible to do a 400w bare-bulb vert setup in a DR80 grow tent? The measurements are 31.5"x31.5"x47". My main fear is that only having 15" from the walls to the bulb won't be enough space to grow without the risk of burning the plants.

I can run a vert cool-tube if it might be better? I currently run cool-tube as with a classic style reflector my temps get into the mid-high 90's very quickly.

Also plant arrangement; I'm thinking either 8 plants arranged around the bulb in a square like so:

Or having 4 plants arranged in each corner for maximum space for budding like so:

The strain I'll be running is Pineapple Express. Very branchy/stretches well and has a phenomenal yield. They will be in soil fed the Lucas Formula as I haven't had managed to pull off 5 gal DWC without issues yet. I do have 4x5gal buckets to have another go at DWC if it would be a better idea?

Any thoughts or pointers? Any and all help is appreciated. I'm about ~4 weeks away from my current harvest so I'm finding out the key info ahead of time so I can amend anything before I'm already under way!

I prefer layout one, with 8 plants, check out Arminus's thread, he has done both DWC and doughnuts with success .....good luck!

I ran a 400 bare bulb vert in a dr-80 with ppk's. Worked great. My current homebuilt tents are 32x32x72 still running 400's vertical with 4" axial fan blowing up. You definitely need screens or something to pull plants back but you wont get burn if you do.

I have found that fewer plants are better in such a small area. I use 4 plants and struggle to control the growth in ppk's.

I currently run two generic 30x30x64 inch tents. 400 watt hps in both, flip box, carbon filter in the tent, 6" extraction fan sitting on top.

Pots are small 1-2 gallon containers.

Yields great, just gotta keep up on training/pulling buds up. Drain to waste with coco and blumats = stupid simple win.

I have used a 400 vert in a DR80.
Works like a peach!
I had a desk fan blowing straight up, with square holed plastic screen wrapped around the frame (inside tent).
I used blumats, airpots, and coco in that tent with 4 AK99 around the bulb, in the corners.
I never dialed in that set-up, but I was easily getting 12 dry with room for improvement.
My reservoir, fan and filter were resting on a square of sheetrock above the tent.
Very simple set-up.

I would stay away from a cool tube, as the bare bulb will give you enough distance.

I would say go for it with DWC if you can keep the water temps down.
Perhaps having a square of styrafoam slightly smaller than the LxW of the tent to put ontop of buckets so to keep cooler air at reservoir level.
Put air pumps in the path of intake air too...

-If you decide to go DWC, my easy recipe that I learned from an old member named Neptune is PBP grow/soil bloom @ 10ml/gallon and cal/mg @ 3ml/gallon tap water.
All thru-out the grow.

Thanks for the promising words guys! I'll be running 4 plants hand watered me thinks.

I have 2 Chemmy Jones to chop a few weeks ahead of my main harvest in my tent at the moment, so once they have made room I think I'll drop the bare bulb in there to just see how things finish up with some vert!

I'm really eager to get things rolling

I cut my 2 CJ plants as they were showing all cloudy. Just finished removing my cool tube and replacing i with just the bare bulb. Still gotta tidy up though haha.

Really got the itch for this vert thing since hitting this sub forum!
