What's new

What's the current state of older workhorses like NL & AK-47?

With all due respect, I beg to differ about NL in general doesn't smell much. While I do agree about Dr. Atomic's (major disappointment), Peak Seeds, Nirvana's and Homegrown Fantaseeds versions being 'lowish' odor, this baby reeks! I have grown a lot of NL over the years and each and every one pales in comparison to this one. The closest representation was Sensi Seeds version about 15 or so years ago.

However, I do agree 100% with you about 'real' NL genetics. It'll put 95% of the more 'modern strains' to shame.

I have a pack of PeakseedsBC NL5, and I got to tell you it reeks! I had to shut it down. I wasn't prepared for that type of odor control.. Currently running Bogs Bogglegum, 2 different phenos, and neither has the odor that the PS NL5 had.

I had some NL seeds and popped em a few years back. They were really dank. Like a skunky catpiss/pinesol smell to her and was a big yielder. I lost the cut because I had bought a bag of NL from a dude and it sucked, so I thought this plant would suck too.

Nope. This herb turned out to be fire and I was pissed at loosing it. I still kick myself in the cheeks for flowering out all the girls without keeping a clone. I remember when the first marijuana magazines came out and you could buy seeds of NL#1 -#5........
and Skunk#1. Early Pearl. Afghani#1. All the classics from the 70's.

Ive grown out the G-Force from Flying Dutchman. (Skunk x NL) x G13. Still not as good as the originals. Although I highly recomend it to anyone as a perfect SOG plant with rock hard skunky/nl taste and smell. All crystal covered. A hybrid cross of the classics from old and new.

id be careful about any statements about strains of old and now.

after smoking for 20 years i could smoke "real fire" and go, "thats nice, can i have some more?"

so, anything that kicked my ass in the past and was real memorable, today, it would probably not have close to that effect.

Yup, that's what it used be. This is more 'predominantly' what it looks like these days. Don't get me wrong, it's still a half decent smoke but it ain't no 'one hit quitter' in my books. Hoping my 'last one' will be something different, however, early indications are more of the same ol' same ol'.

ive had alot of variation from the seeds. and like some one said it may have kicked ass back in the day but tbh it was strong for its time, not really by todays standards. even the cherry ak is pretty shit.

Yeah the one from classic is skunky as fuck. Not really that common to find nowadays commercially.
Good to know as I've only heard about the strain's history up until now. Have you grown it? It's an IBL right? So not much variation?

As far as classic's I grew two packs of his NL crossed to four fathers he released a couple years back. I didn't know until recently he had a pure version available so I am going to grow those soon because I have a love affair with NL. The NL was easier to recognize in the f2 generation of those packs. I've probably grown a couple hundred now of those f2s. I am curious myself what his breeding history with it is because his offering is in regular seed form.

In general you are absolutely right, however I stand by my statement, (too old to be careful anymore!) lol.

After 42 years of chronic smoking, I'll still put 'this' NL alongside many of today's offerings...she'll more than hold her own, no matter what the 'flavor of the day' is. Every now and then a 'gem' turns up...this is one of them. If this is all I could smoke until I shift off this mortal coil, I'd be more than satisfied, she has yet to let me (or dozens of others) down. Just as good now as the first day I smoked it 8 years ago (and I smoke it a lot).

i think you would have to find a good cut of nl. tbh there is so many ripped off versions of the old school strains around. i remember nl was one of the first ones i ever smoked. it wasnt the strongest at the time. but i had only a lil bit. the strongest thing i ever smoked in my youth was the old white rhino cut. to this day still the strongest.

Bud Man10, I had a cut of Northern Lights about eight years back that was just fantastic. It was a small to medium sized plant that had dark leaves and when the buds were mature just reaked more than any other strain in my room at that time. It smelled of hot rubber when the tric's were rubbed between my fingers and the buzz was knock out with great yield potential. I was wondering if yours has this hot tire (rubber) smell when pressed between your fingers? Curious if it was the same plant as it looks identical to the pic you posted, I think, from what I remember. 8 years has blured my image of her slightly, but not her taste or smell - that was unforgetable. I unfortunately lost her and am sad to this day. Thanks for reminding me of her, good memories.

Hey buddy, as I mentioned earlier, one of the stinkiest I've ever seen. No burnt rubber smell, just pure skunky cat piss when it's vegging/flowering, but cures up to that unmistakable NL smell that carries right through to the taste. The hash I make from her is awesome too. If I 'coax' her along (which I generally do), she produces really well, one of the best yielders I've ever had...big, heavy, tight buds.

I think I know what you mean TGT by the burnt rubber smell now because I caught a whiff of it on a plant today that is 25% Classic's NL. To me it smells like a combination of baby poo and cut grass but that burnt rubber is also a good way to describe it.

critical33 smelled like that.. burning bike tires + mongolian beef, later a bit more like the brand new tennis shoe smell. course there's no apparent strain relation there.. got used to it real fast but the first whiff was kinda unpleasant.

Hi
Interesting question.
I've just harvested some SS AK. I couldn't find any similarity with the old pre-2000 I had. Some good tasting plants, but very little production. And for sure they aren't the killing herb it was. I wouldn't recommend it.
Peace
