ya i dont know about this one. i mean shit ive seen some dogs get pretty stoned and walk around the house all funny and weird but harmful? my dog damn near runs up to me when i have a pipe in my hand. he sits right in front of me waiting for a hit. the point about edibles and chocolate makes sense though.

please don't anthropomormhise your pets.
marijuana is great for us but toxic to other animals.
horses for instance.
HIGHLY toxic to horses.
some things just don't work the same...

Seems that it is ingestion that is toxic not vapours , we all know that edibles have a very different effect to smoking .
I has a Jack Russell back in the 70`s that loved blowbacks , sat down as soon as you sparked up then lapped up the smoke . Most laid back dog i ever had & it could`nt have done him any harm as he lived to nr 17yr .

Please don't separate humans from the animal kingdom... It's a mistake. ;-)

The dogs probably died from the chocolate in the brownies

from: http://stash.norml.org/off-the-leash-marijuana-and-dogs
An LD50 (the amount for a dose that will kill half of those who take it) has not been established in dogs or cats. Research in dogs and monkeys showed that oral doses of delta 9-THC and delta 8-THC ranging from 3,000 to 9,000 mg/kg were not lethal, and all dogs recovered within 24 hours of ingestion.

When my dog had cancer, they gave her a slew of medicine with many nasty side effects up to and including death. I made her some edibles and they got her to eat and sleep, which brought her comfort. A friend had a dog with cancer, and we made a batch for him, and he also had good results from it, never got sick or anything, and had improved appetite and sleep patterns.

I wouldn't do it "to get the dog high" but I feel it could have medical benefits beyond human use.

Well said, :tiphat:.

Overdosing absolutely sounds related to chocolate, not cannabis.

If the animals were eating edibles that had other things in them that could have caused death, (like Chocolate with dogs) WELL FUCKIN DUH!!!!

But to say the Cannabis caused it is full on BULLSHIT! One of my former patients, and still close friend, has a dog that will sit in front of you when your smoking and howl at you until you blow her a couple hits!

As for felines,... I have 3, ALL of them will eat raw leaves when I was trimming, and the oldest who is starting to get arthritis in his hips will follow my wife downstairs to beg for a hit when he's sore.

oh i forget to mention that, all my cats munch on my leaves.

they usually pick the stronger plants.

gotten pretty fond of the pure sativa i have. (it has leaves that get me really high (they usually always pick the plants that have smokable leaves.))

Yep, got a Fell terrier that eats trim and will munch on leaves if he sneaks in the greenhouse. Doesn't bother with dry bud and just sneezes when he's in the smoke.

Bet wild dogs in places like India eat weed growing wild just like they eat grass.

I just had a thought (damn, gives me a headache every time).

Why is this suddenly an issue? You'd think that if it's so deadly to dogs it would have made it to the press long ago.

Might it have something to with anti-pot propaganda? Efforts to keep people scared? Kind of like "Oh, the Poor Children who would become victims of the devil weed" if it were legalized?

well, maybe it was a case of some people being overly fraid of the weed and "jumping to conclusions."

then again, it might be a monetary reason, some in the dark pull stringers.

and it might be simply someone insane.

or it might be just some fucking with people, cause they can.

theobromine poisoning is a serious issue. a few ounces of dark chocolate can kill a small dog. any vet will have seen this sort of fatality in their practice.

how can a vet, a "doctor", see a dog dead of a pot brownie....and say its the pot, and not the brownie? mebe the guy hasnt google the ld-50 of cannabis in dogs

from from the June 2002 issue of Veterinary Medicine (a peer reviewed journal btw)

I don't think we need to crawl up this articles ass too much..

Regardless of lethal statements and the bogus propaganda its still a good Public Service Announcement in a country of increasing availability to edibles and similar.

Ingestion while not fatal..can certainly lead to a bad experience for your pet. Keep your edibles out of their paws.

With an influx of medical cannabis around the country I dont doubt this statement.
But now, those numbers have more than quadrupled.
..more people with med cards..more people buying edibles from dispensaries = rise in those edibles being left in reach of pets = more scared pet owners as their animals get really fucked up from ingestion.

My dog got into a whole butter ball screening of waste material. It was not a pretty sight, and while I know cannabis is non fatal it was very scary seeing my best friend disoriented, drooling/foaming, but more importantly the sporadic breathing changes that took place. Its easy for a human to know that 'its just weed..I'll be OK'....who knows how the dog was feeling, but it wasnt good.

Our pets cannot tell us how they feel. Puppy 'panic attacks' are no fun. My dog was throwing up, panting/drooling and in a complete state of confusion/disorientation for several hours before finally sleeping it off.

This is an informative story for pet owners, but it goes a long way to prove that there is no place for government in this. Do you need to now keep your meds in a gun safe?

Our dogs and children can die EASILY from eating the crap under most kitchen sinks and NONE of them can die from cannabis, so before making rules or laws about cannabis storage need to take care of the house hold cleaning agents first.

this should be the topic of discussion...once again, inflammatory and dubious claims against cannabis are preventing dialogue about something that actually matters.

why dont medibles come packaged in the same type of container we put other medications in?
the vets could have issued a more responsible (and factual) cautionary notice about the non-lethal, yet terribly unpleasant effects of edible cannabis on pets/kids...instead of the typical reefer madness bullshit...

anybody remember the DARE program? "This is Marijuana, it will make your balls shrivel up and you might go crazy, or choke on your own vomit and die!"

that was really helpful in teaching a generation of kids...that babylon is a bunch of liars and couldnt be trusted. but drug education? not even close.

I was gifted a fat rice crispy treat once., like huge, maybe 1/3 of a tray basically. Set it on top of my computer desk. Go get milk come back like 1 minute later and the rice crispy was no where to be found ! I'm like Wtf.. I'm looking every where thinking I put it else where (I was already ston)ed.. then my sister comes in holding a empty bag. She's like "whatever this was foxy ( her tiny ass dog ) just ate it. Dont leave food out !!!". I told her I didn't and her dog musta done some ninja ass climbing cause the desk was high.

Foxy ends up chillin on my couch and like 30 mins later I look at her and she visually looked HELLA stoned. I'm like oh shit. My gf looks it up snd we find out its bad for dogs. But it was midnight and we didn't want a 500$ late night vet bill so we waited it out.

The poor dog was so stoned she literally did not move for 24 hours. I'd pick up her paw and it would fall right back down. She would only moved her eyes, wouldn't eat any of her favorite snacks or anything. My sister finally found out what happened the next morning and was freaking out.. but nothing we could do..

The dog ended up being okay, but I am MUCH more careful now...

Another time at a party we were passing out medicated pound cake. Some one threw it away and a dog got it outta the trash. Poor dog was puking all night long. It wasn't pleasant sight at all.

Both dogs lived.. so I'm wondering if the story the op posted was about chocolate edibles, and maybe it was the chocolate that caused the dog to.die...

saw this on the new the other night and had a good laugh;

my dog munches down all the leaf and trim that falls on the floor when i trim up my buds; he loves that shit! its like an awesome dog salad. i think it calms his stomach.

anyways there was a study not too long ago where they tried to kill mice (maybe rats?) by dosing them with something like 1000 times their own body-weight in cannabis.

as i recall the mice went into a coma for a few hours then woke back up healthy as ever.
but your going to have to look that one up cause i might be imagining that study!

Iv read that to uk i belive professor said u might as well beat the rat to death with the bag of weed insted using it isnt gona work lol...may have been the op sain that or the prof.. Not sure but have heard this as well
