Can you tell whether a strain is Indica or Sativa by its flowering time?

I know that indicas are shorter, denser, shorter flowering times, with with leaf and generally more resin than sativa. But can you tell whether a strain is sativa just by how long it flowers. For instance, if a plant takes 100 days to flower its probobly a sativa right? or could it still be an indica?

I meant indica has less leaf than sativa generally. I made a typo and it wont let me edit it sorry.

indica = shorter flower times....why because of there geographical place of origin...winter comes sooner....IE shorter flowering times....
sativa = longer flowering times.....why because most places are tropical and hardly see any winter, in there place or origin... IE... longer flowering time

MOST now a days are a hybrid of the 2......in variable ratio's....

yea i know about the geographic locations, sativa is closer to the equator which makes for longer flowering times naturally. So basically your saying "yes" to my question right? Your saying that you can tell indica or sativa simply by its flowering time right? I mean, has anyone seen an indica go more than 60-70 days?

I personally am more of an indica guy, but im having trouble finding a high yielding indica. I get like 2oz in a 2gal from sativas but they take like 80-100 days. My indicas go like 50-60 days but yield much less than my sativas, although the buds are rock hard they generally are smaller than the sativas and dont add up to as much in the end.

my sativas get like 6ft high in a 2gal with lots and lots of branches of huge buds but after being trimmed and dried the nuggets are fluffy not dense and generally has the "outdoor" look. The trich production on sativas ive see can be very nice but its usually not as frosty as my indicas.

Proper Don't let mother nature fool you....don't put limits on the varieties...Learn from them..
NoCal actually takes a lil longer and the plants get Taller compared simply to SoCal...
So technically that theory of closer equatorial is not correct...but its implication is useable and logical..
Not only should you consider Lat/Long but also Altitude and barometric differentials..Lots to consider but power to it...

there are exceptions to the indicas/earlier finishing and sativas/later finishing rule if you're growing outdoors. i've had sativas start flowering in late july and indicas start in early september due to the outdoor photoperiod..

but indoor plants composed of mostly indica genes finish flowering sooner than sativas do.

Proper yes but its not limited as Eastbeast has mentioned...You can have a slow starting late flowering Indica dom..Can be a fast starting fast finishing Indica..Can see a fast starting very slow finishing Sat dom..and or a Slow starting very slow finishing Sativa dom..
Where you grow these will be 50% of its expression to start no matter how well you know the genetic make up of the lines in question..
But basic thinking or theory is yea Highland or Midland will show more Indica traits as opposed to lowland valley type Sativas...
But the closer you get to the equator the more intense the Sun is for them so altitude plays more of a factor as you get further from the Equator also the strength of the sun gets less as you move away from equatorial locals...Just factors to consider..

Hybrids can be tricky. Have a SD cross that went 85 days with a nice 50/50 high. Another pheno went about 70 with a more buzzy head feeling and looked indica in stature.

Flowering time alone can't be used to figure out if your working with a sativa or indica, look at C'99 for example, she is a sativa but is finished in 8 weeks. I grew out the Critical Mass Bilbo cut last run, in every way she expresses herself as a sativa but she is finished in 7-8 weeks. IMO you have to look at all the traits to decide if the strain is sativa or indica but lets face it most strains today are hybrids.

Its a bit like asking "can I tell if they are a man or a woman by how much weight they can bench press?" The averages don't tell the whole story. It's not worth worrying about, all that really matters is when its finished, ask "do I like it?"

Are you asking about the subjective effects of the smoked flowers?
Whether they are:
1) clear, up, mentally stimulating but lacking the body effects - sativas
or
2) narcotic, powerful, puts you to sleep body stone - the indicas
and if you can predict which type of high it would produce just by the flowering time?

If this is the case then the short answer is no.

It's actually rather confusing because what I've observed is that there are 2 different kind of uses for the indica-sativa. Some people associate it with the type of high(eg. indica-'stoned' vs sativa-'high') while some with the type of plant (indica - short, quick flowering, broad leaves etc vs sativa - tall, branchy, long flowering, thin leaves etc).

The point is that these two are not necessarily the same. A long flowering thin leaved sativa can get you stoned to the bone while another long flowering thin leaved plant will charge you with the zing.

What it all boils down to is the specific cannabinoid and terpenoid cocktail of the specific plant. When mentioning terpenoids, which are the compounds responsible for the aroma, one could propose that it is somewhat possible to predict the type of effects by smell.

You can check the link in my signature for a great article about the cannabinoids and terpenoids and what effects are associated to them.

Hope this helps.
