no smell after dry..whats your method for getting the funk out?

i think the biggest reason for no smell after harvest is just picking too early, most of the terps get made in the last week or two, if you pick a week or two early, you then have only a small fraction of the terps in your buds that you should have when your buds are dry, and no amount of curing will change that.

another factor i think is the strains that are generally thought of as fast or high yielding already lack in the smell department. if you early pick a strain like northern lights or c99 you end up with a bag of grass no matter what...conversely i think most people know that og or chemdog take 11 to 12 weeks for ripeness, so people are picking them more on time than say northern lights wich most people pick way too early...not to mention chemdog and og kush have redonkulous stanks to them, and og kush especially, gets its smell early on, while chemdog seems to hit later before it's ripe.

i would advise to just go a week or two longer before harvest next time, you will end up with smellier, tastier buds guaranteed.

I am with the sloth on this one, wait a little longer till all the individual calaxs are swollen ( look at how big the preflowers get.)

Infinitesimal how do you know sunlight ruins bud? you ever tried it? or are you just regurgitating what you read on the internet? well good herb has been dried this way from the beginning. 2 days of sun after you pick (a plant that was in the sun from seed) surly wouldn't ruin it. In fact i think 2days or sun does less damage to your buds than than a week with a fan constantly blowing on it.

Get them in the jars a day or two before the stems start getting brittle, but leave the jars open for a day or two with humidity meter inside, burp until you start to see 50-60% humidity levels. Water a ton then let them dry for a few days before picking, stagger your light to several days of darkness if you want. I can't claim these are surefire ways, but I can say they work for quality genes.

You've got your pungent types like Sour Diesel or Headband that are going to be hard to mess up. Then you have things more subtle like bubblegum or grapefruit/C99's where you really want to bring out the distinct smell of each phenotype (assuming you aren't running off clones).

As others have said, the slower the better - no need to overshoot your air circulation either. Bring them to maturity and don't chop early. A lot of people chop when they start seeing the hairs turn orange - I don't agree with that. Best rule I think is to take it as far into maturity as you can, then when you can't wait any longer - give it another 4-7 more days.

tbh i dont think you should need to cure a bud for it to smell nice. but alot of true points brought up here over the thread.

what i do:

grow plants till the leaves are yellow and all the fanleaves have just about fallen off.

chop plant, remove all major fan leaves and trim down to sugar.

hang upside down in a cool dry place till dry enough to snap stems. usually a week or so.

cut buds off stems cut down larger buds.

place in jar.

open once a day for 10-15 minutes for a week.

once a few days another week.

once a week till they are fully dry in jar.

the end.

that's how i learned, hasn't failed me yet.

buds turning brown, getting funky, etc. they weren't fully dry before you left them in the jars to mold.

I've bought a load of strains online now & have had loads of faint smelling buds :O( im sure breeders are trying to eradicate smells for growroom stealth issues... but IMO I think they are breeding out the #1 trait of the bud.
I'm sure it's the strain you are growing... I have a cheese plant that stinks as a mother, if your plant is smelly you will not be able to stop her from stinking.

If you jar buds without giving them a long enough dry period the moisture inside the buds will rehydrate them so they feel fresh n damp again, burping will NOT sort them out, they will need to be re-dried properly... with drying & rehydrating & drying comes mould issues n bad flavours... I get loads of buds passed my way with a earthy mouldy kinda taste lingering in its flavours... Dry once properly & your bud will taste exactly how it should.

Only thing you grow is plants that yield an 8th and smell like hay.

Ya some good points here. I have run lots of strains and i think my problem lies with my choice to always harvest to early. No matter what I'm usually not taking any strain past 56 days. I had nirvana nl for a while and I would harvest always at 8 weeks. The flowers are always nice but lacked any individuality.

I m working with a ssh x SD cross that reaks of garlic and gym socks. Think ill take them 10 weeks for a change.

I stay in the low 80s. My budget won't allow a portable Ac right now but I have good ventilation and exhaust.

You must have control over temp and humidity in whatever room, tent, etc. in which you are drying your plants in.Throw a thermostat in the area and use ac humidifier etc for control. Low to mid 70's will allow a slow enough dry which should take no less than 4 days. Do not remove until you can snap a stem. After harvest, before you chop down the whole plant to hang dry, remove all large fan leaves leaving the smaller leaves on. This will end up creating a cocoon like effect around the buds when the leaves dry, good for protection and whatnot of the flowers. Take down the plants remove buds and place on nice crisp newspaper or paper bag.(This is a personal preference for me believe it adds a nice crispy texture which i like.) The jar up making sure to burp for as long as you like.

@hereigrow- Don't let a predetermined time length dictate when you should harvest. Go by what the plant tells you. Those Sour D's could take longer than 10 weeks like mine do, or not.

Air circulation is paramount in the first week after cut, it's like the buds are sweating out the mosture that contains the clorphile and other undisierables while the wind is blowing it away, if you hang your buds with no air circulation they lose smell for what ever reason maybe someone can explane it for me.

Get your temps down to like 75ish with the lights on and 65ish with the lights off and smell will improve over night.
