So I am preparing some coco coir, the only coco I have available locally is from the pet store, stuff I use for my tortoise, so I ordered Bonticare bales and a brick also, I prepared the brick last night with distilled water, my tap is 960ppm and bout 8 ph, I used distilled water ph at 5.8, once expanded I measured run off ppm of the coco and got a reading of over 7000ppm, thats crazy, but my meter is right I've checked it, so I have these net type bag, worked perfectly to fit some coxo in and I washed in under my warm tap till I got the ppm 1000 now will flush in distilled water, damn this is alot of work, I can not even prepare a whole small brick at once and I have bales to prepare. I have always read good things about Bonticare which is why I ordered it and paid shipping etc. if I knew I would be have to wash the complete shit out of it I would have went to the pet store for coco, guess what I want to know or ask is if this sounds right or am I missing something, is this bonticare really in the 7000ppm range? Wtf? Anyone ever experience this? Also I am finding white little crystal type things in the coco, I thought maybe salts but I actually ate some lol to see and dont seem to be, no taste at all, anyone know bout that?

Something is off.. nothing has ever been that high.. what ppm meter are you using because my Truncheon commercial series barely hits 4kppm. Grab a cotton pillow case and stuff it full of your coco, then grab your garden hose and run it a few minuets less than 5minuets and you should have some coco that reads what ever your tap water does. You can then flush that with your ph RO water as you need.

Coco would then be safe to use for your plants.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for quick reply, so seems the brick so far is much worse than the bails, my first bail is measuring @3000ppm not great but much better, my meter measures in ppm x10, so my tap is measuring @ 096 ppm x10 so 960ppm, right?

Ive been using the Botanicares coco bales (the ones in the white vac wrapped packages) for years now... I don't see myself going to Cannas version..at least not full time.. i may do a comparison grow though..

Alas, I've never had a prob with ppms of my coco... i think something is wrong with your meter..7000ppm is unheard of...that's toxic...

Maybe your meter is outta whack at higher readings.. i had a meter that acted up at lower panges... don't know how... but it did..

Any chance you're off by a decimal place or multiplying by 1000 instead of 100? I have never EVER heard of tap water at 960 ppm even in areas rich in clay soil composition. 96 ppm tap water and the bricks coming off at 700 ppm sounds much more plausible. I've also never heard of a meter reading that high...

Oh I see my new meter says it measures 1-999 then readings over 999 are multiplied by 10, so yeah my coco was @ 700ppm not 7000 & my tap @ 96, lol I knew them readings seemed crazy, what I get from burning one before I work, thanks for the replies so except for that one dirty brick should be able to expand my bales with my tap water and then flush with distilled, my run off is at 36ppm, thank god lol
