Decent Quality, Affordable Fencing

Hello,

I'm trying to source a fence for next year. This year, $25 deer netting supported by redwood branches (as the posts) were sufficient to surround the small garden. But for 2013 a better fence is needed, I'd like to hear what you guys/gals have found as good fencing for a decent price.

My main issue with the deer netting was that it was extremely thin plastic, got tangled (it came folded like a blanket) and breaks somewhat easily.

I'd like to find a 100' x 5-6' tall fence that comes in a roll. I've been to Home Depot and they didn't have anything plastic that wasn't orange. Dark green or black preferred. Where have you guys found fencing? (Online or....?) My budget for fencing is about $300 including posts and hopefully a gate of some sort. I've found kits online but can't speak of the quality.

Not looking to cement holes. Planning on pounding stakes into the ground. This is on a 20-40* slope, so metal chain link or anything that sturdy I don't think will work. Open to metal fencing, but thick plastic seems to be best.

Thank you for the help

we use 2x4x72 welded wire fencing, i just paid 90 for a hundred feet. If you dont want it shiny throw her in a fire for a minute or two.

4x4x8 redwood posts -5.50
42''x72'' chain link gate - 60
gate hardware - no more than 10.

im also on a decent slope, and plan to dig in and cement my gate posts.

You can look in my albums, we use two types of solutions. One is T-bars with pigwire, and that ends up costing close to what you're going to pay for a proper cyclone fence. Obviously the labor is different, but the cyclone fencing is much more 'varmint' proof (I'm not limiting my comment here to deer).

Pigwire is quick & dirty, but it will resist pushy deer a lot better than that plastic stuff. I've had deer yank around the plastic stuff and break it, don't know if it was a buck or a doe, but they yanked it and ate up all my lettuce, right to the ground.

As Seamaiden has mentioned, I installed chain link around the two major garden areas of ours. One of the gardens is on a seriously steep slope and the chain link worked great. You would of course need to use some fence post mix for the posts every ten feet or so. I personally would not use anything other than chain link...just my .02

Thank you for your input, I am going to come back and look when I have more time.

My only issue with chain link is that the grow is in a somewhat pristine, natural and beautiful environment. The goal with the fence would be to have something that is minimally destructive and I consider chain link with cement posts a few steps more than what is needed.

Totally understood. However, especially as it gets late in the season, the deer become more and more desperate for food and they can get incredibly pushy and destructive. It was a month ago that they went for my lettuces. You should see what they've done to my weeping cherry (several years old, unprotected). I think you should consider at least something as sturdy as pigwire.

I see advertising for 'invisible' deer fencing in Acres, USA magazine, but I've never really looked into it.
