old school open bulb

what kinda results can one expect from a old school style open bulb grow?

what im talking about, is a room with 4 or 5 lights hung vertically right above the canopy. not donuts/circles, but basically a horizontal grow setup with bulbs hung vertically. i believe the idea is to gain horizontal spread, but obviously you lose vertical penetration.

possibly rows would be best to allow the lights to drop down between?

seen KB do it once a couple years ago. seems ok for a quick set up and go

You'll get reduced yields for sure... but you'll still get a harvest.

Take a 4' piece of 8" ducting... the kind that you're supposed to fit together yourself. Open it up wide like a reflector, drill 4 holes in the ends and use them to screw in 2 pieces of wood to hold it open.

Cut a 4" wide section of the crimped-up end (where it's supposed to fit into another section of pipe) in the middle and bend it down. Drill 2 holes and bolt your socket to it.

CHEAP ass hood that works better than vertical. Nowhere near optimal, but at least 40% better than just a lamp hanging down. :D

Total cost is usually less than $15. Hope that helps.

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

Before I started dropping lamps down into the canopy I did a grow with 9 600w lamps just hung vertically above an even "horizontal type" canopy...12x12 room all flat white. A few colas would reach up into the sweet spot, but most of the grow was below the vertical lamps.

5400w = 7-8lbs

Wasn't the most efficient use of light, but definitely got job done.

I think where a lotta folks get confused about runnin bare bulbs above a "horizontal" type canopy is they think all the lights are above the plants blastin sideways and not gettin down to the inner canopy...and it is.......

Unless yas make the lumens bounce up down and all around by making smaller rooms their own "air-cooled reflectors".....

Hydro-Soil....excellent cheap idea Bro....but....there`s a simple way ta use bare bulbs for more intense exposure to the plants underneath......

After krusty buckets for almost a decade with big plants , Heath taught me about increased plant numbers and smaller flip rooms ftw , and believe me.....they work....

I ran 5 gal ebb and flow buckets in side by side flip rooms at 5 locations with 35 plants in each room with what many would call a controller bucket , but was in essence a failsafe device to prevent flooding as rootmasses grew and swelled till end of stretch with an industrial float switch wired back to the feed pumps to kill juice if the timers didn`t do it first.....so....

I had each room with angled ceilings and everything that wasn`t green covered in reflectix and a small muffin fan under each bare bulb to keep heat gently convected and sucked outta the rooms twice per minute while all the light was being diffused and blasted at the plants down to the depth of canopy penetration I created so ......

Everything on the vine got optimum lumens ftw and I pulled 5 lb rooms consistently EVERY run in 10 rooms for 5 yrs plus with little to no variation in monocropped dialed bitches......

6 x 6 rooms with 3-600`s inline and bottoms of the bulbs were down amongst the plants once stretch was over , but for the most part right even with the tops as they stretched till swellage ensued.....

Many ways to skin a mule guys...Just gotta wrap yer head around it and make it happen.....35- 2 1/2 oz plants finished every run for consistent product and babyshit simple once dialed and all 10 rooms were identical.....

Environment and watts per sq ft is everything in a dialed setup with monocropped plants.....believe that....

Peace....DHF.....:ying:.....
