Protecting against backyard thieves?

What are the safest, legal property defense options for California backyard medical growers?

I'm in Northern California running a medical co-op grow with 4 others in my backyard. A lot of our plants are in full flower with some of them very close to harvest and I'm now extra worried about thieves after a recent event: the neighbor right next to our garden decided to replace their roof, which resulted in a lot of day-laborers standing high up with full sight of our 25 plants. I even spoke with one of them and he complimented me on the garden.

As nice as that guy may have seemed, how many guys will be eyeing my grow while this roof is replaced? And who else will they tell? I have to assume my address is on someone's map or soon will be.

So with that reality in mind, what can I reasonably do to protect my grow? So far we've:

-Padlocked the gates and put up "beware of dog" signs (but we're not actually allowed to have a dog because we're renting)
-Installed a wireless night-vision security camera w/ motion recording
-Stashed a 3-cell Maglite and a sword (roommate's lol) near the back door in case we actually have to scare someone off
-Ordered a wireless motion sensor+alarm combo to alert us at night

Any other ideas? Our fences around this neighborhood suck and can easily be jumped so the padlocks are mostly useless deterrents that will only stop the laziest of thieves. The security footage won't be of much use since the cops will likely laugh it off plus it doesn't do anything to PREVENT theft (unless one of us is constantly watching the live feed for intruders).

I'm thinking the motion alarm + Maglite is my best defense currently. Guns are out of the question as California laws suck in that regard, even pepper spray over 2.5oz is illegal here and could only be used for defense of life, not property, or you'd be tried for assault.

So once again, what are the safest, legal property defense options for California backyard medical growers?

sleeping outside with your dogs sounds like the best option

guns and shit could cost you more in lawyer fees than the crop is worth

GOOD LUCK! ......... and remember that anybody who would rip your crop will remember your address next year too

he dont have dogs . maybe just bark every once in a while while sleeping out there. paintball guns work well too and you can get pepperspray balls.if someone gets into my backyard they will soon wish they had been shot. my girl is pumped and ready. i time her laps around the yard and she is fucking quick. lol there aint much else you can do. maybe a few trip wires. and noisy wires. and electric fence around plants.??? altho there could be legal issues there if someone got hurt too.

she might hump it but only after she tears it off. she is the meanest dog ever i had. not nessesarrilly the toughest but she is one bad shepard bitch.when i had a farm i got an electric fence for certain areas. its a low voltage kit and wires insulators and such. i had to post signs every so many feet. i didnt just electrify a regular fence.

Rig your plants with some fishing line, fishhooks/razor blades and/or bells.

Ordered a wireless motion sensor+alarm combo to alert us at night

This saved my plants one year , they`d cut through the fence to enter & the alarm tripped indoors . Within 20secs i was there with the dog & a sharpened border fork but they were already leaving as i realised later they`d seen the LED light up , i should have taped it over .

Another option is a roll of razor wire inside the top of your fence . Tear them up getting in & tear them up getting out
I realise that may not be a viable option but it`s worth looking at .

Another one worth a look at is a 12g Blank alarm gun . It`s just a metal bracket screwed to post/fence/tree with a spring loaded firing pin , 12g blank cartridge & trip wire . ( i use the fine green garden tie wire) . No licence needed & it will scare the shit out of them . That fires off they will leg it & if it doe`s ever go off move it so it`s harder to find if there is a return trip . Found my 12g alarm & motion sensor on ebay .

It`s no good going out after them unless your prepared to use some form of violence to protect your crop . A baseball bat or pick-axe handle makes a truly satisfying sound when swung against a shithead .

Good luck .

dont get alarm gun if you got neighbors. great on farm ,bad with neighbors. sure the rippers run , but then you got a crapload of cops there. dont ask

Motion sensors attached to floodlights and alarms will discourage most rippers and provide you with early warning to monitor your crop.

I would avoid firearms except for legitimate risk of life issues, or anything that could be mistaken as a firearm (including sounds), as that could create legal issues that are best avoided, and not necessary to meet your goal.

Best of luck.

I can't buy "bear spray" in California since it's just pepper spray that shoots far. Wish I could; I was about to order some before I found out the legal max is a 2.5oz personal pepper sprayer. Useless.

Bells on the plants themselves would just be blowing in the wind non-stop.

Motion lights, alarms, and sleeping outside all sound good. How's this for a cheap motion light? Enough to scare anyone off? http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Beams-Wireless-Spotlight-Photocell/dp/B002P6EQPW
