Squatting becomes a criminal offence in UK

Police are being urged to take advantage of new laws that will allow them to move in and arrest squatters.

I could see both sides to this, genuine homeless people move into a derelict or abandoned building owned by greedy banks such as unfinished / liquidated ghost complexes VS people scrounging around looking for any opportunity to occupy vacant houses while their owners are off guard.

The latter no harm.

Unfortunately I feel like these laws will only be fully utilised by banks against "undesirables" such as homeless people.

Say im a bank and a house has been repod, i have to pay security to look after it so that pot toking hippies like izzywozzywizzy cant squat in it . With these new laws however all i have to do is call the police, very handy indeed. Lot more home owners are going to start getting kicked out id imagine.

Terrible stuff indeed. hope this shit doesnt happen to us.

Ireland has different laws relating to squatting. Although there are a few notable squats and many hundred / thousand definable squats, it is no where near as prevalent as it is in England or Europe.

I think the 'Occupy' protesters tried to squat a NAMA building in Cork City in order to turn it into a community space and were pulled up before the courts fairly quickly.

Irish squatters rights are a bit bizarre at times and focus on rights over time as opposed any immediate rights.

Which is fucked up given the number of 'gost estates' and empty commercial properties in Ireland relative to the number of homeless and unemployed!

it would be the folk essentially squatting in their own homes that laws like this would screw over.

From April there is a new law where if you live in rented or social housing your gonna be charged for extra spare bedrooms......it's expected that homelessness is gonna get worse.

Funny how they have just brought this new law in.

Corrupt bastards.

if your a landlord and you have had squaters you know its very hard to get rid of them and when you rely on the income its not exactly a robin hood situation.
