Percentage of Sativa vs. Indica

I've been wondering for a while about how do seed vendors and seed breeders know how much Sativa and Indica is in a specific hybrid. For example, Dutch Passion Shaman has 87,5% Sativa and 12,5% Indica in it. That sounds very precise to me. How the hell do they measure that?

would have to be first cross sativa with indica = 50/50

second cross: 50/50 plant with sativa = 75 sativa/25 indica

and so on ... you do the math!

cheers ...

Honestly, it's just a rough guesstimate. Very few breeders are crossing a 100% indica to a100% sativa to get a 50/50 mix and even fewer are backcrossing to a parent to get percentages like 75% or 87.5% or 93.75%. Furthermore, even the most stable crosses will have a little phenotype variation so while something maybe be '75% sativa', you may still get a 'couchlock pheno' in there.

While those percentages do help us pick out something we'll probably enjoy, they're by no means gospel.
