What kind of luck do you have with your F2 seeds?

Just wondering how everyone does with their F2 seeds they make themselves...how do they hold up compared to the "original" plants grown from the original pack of seeds you bought. Do you find it's worth it to make seeds or are the F2 plants "weaker" than the originals in potency and it's best to just buy another pack when ready to grow again. Just wondering what your personal experience is...

F2's are where the fun starts. Weather the originals are F1's from P1 stock or polyhybrid, the F2's always show more variation and that's where the really interesting plants are found IMO.
^my perspective as well. take my favorite strain golden tiger. the original ace seeds produced relatively uniform plants. my homemade f1's revealed a meao thai dom phen looking plant and a fast malawi pheno as well out of 4 females. the other two looked just like the regular ace seed originals. the fast malawi i cloned but haven't gotten it to root yet. the meao thai leaning pheno clone rooted but hasn't established a root ball yet. fast malawi and meao thai are not to my knowledge available any other way than this method. i am going to cross the normal gts for a normal golden tiger f2 crop for next years golden tiger runs.

another example is zamal. zamal is offered in hybrids only from seed sources and exhibits a strong auto flower characteristic so by running mandala's mango zamal or zamaldelica homemade f1's you can look for that particular characteristic (strong autoflower in early veg stage) and pheno hunt for the zamal doms and then selectively breed for that pheno.

It depends on the dominant and recessive traits of the male and female used. The only way to find out is to make some and grow them out.
For example I have a DSD male I used to make f2's with 4 female phenos of the f1 and dozens of hybrids with other strains. In the f2's and hybrids the female seems to be dominant in 80% of seeds grown. The f2's grow nearly uniform to the mothers traits. There for the male used has passed mostly recessive traits when breeding.
Another perspective I have an OG X SD male where the opposite is true. The progeny of f2's and hybrids lean almost entirely to the male breeding plant. They have almost identical leaf pattern, shape, and size,as well as the same smells and sturdy structure. The female traits seem to be lost or overwhelmed when breed with this male.
Then there is everything in between where there is tons of phenotype variation including things you would never expect. Breeding with a weak plant will result in less vigorous less healthy plants. Breed with strong exciting plants you will usually find the same in the next generation. The only way to find out what an individual plant will pass on is to make the seeds and test them out.

the only down side is they dont grow as fast as the f1s imo

F2s are only as good as their mating, and alot of that is random. Even if you use a mother, with say 25% THC (say LSD) and a male that you've reversed and checked for virility, etc.. there is no guarantee that the progeny with carry the same potency. The same rule of thumb applies to other traits such as taste, flowering time ranges, etc..

If you want the most variation possible, better to open pollinate with multiple males & females than by gambling on a single 1:1 mating.
