Just ordered a S&P TD-100xs (silent series) is the Phresh 4"x12" an ideal match?

Okay ive got a 25CF grow space im working with and a lot of bends, think cool tube and NGB style cab so three separate areas. I want silence and the only thing more important than silence to me is odor control. The S&P silent series fan with the 5" flange seemed pretty sweet so i jumped on it. Its rated roughly 150 CFM on low and 200 CFM on high. Now i know its not a blower so it wont handle pressure as well but if i paired it with a 4"x12" phresh filter (rated 200 CFM) at the exhaust would i be good on both smell and sound you think? or should i have gone for a centrifugal fan? (loud as hell) any advice is appreciated! also the light is a 250 watt HPS! 6 inch cool tube

The 100xs should be ok on a 4x12. If you can fit a larger filter - like the 6x16 - you may get better flow and longer filter life. I always try to get a filter rated higher than my fan - 50% higher if I won't be dialing down the fan with speed control (but I usually get a bigger fan than I need and turn it down too). But the 4x12 on that fan will take care of the smell.

Be prepared for the fan to be louder than you expect, however. I haven't heard any of the xs's, but I had a TD-125 (5"), 150 (6"), and 200 (8") and honestly found they weren't much quieter than a decent centrifugal (and the centrifugals pulled WAY better, the S&P TD's were a little disappointing power-wise and moreso in a cab than a tent).

That said, you have a small space and the 100xs may be just fine.

Wouldn't a 6" fikter have thicker carbon though? further stressing the fan. Also if i upped it instead to the 6" version think it would make up for the lack of oulling power?

No because the outside of the filter has a much larger surface area, twice as much from the 4x12 to 6x16, and there will be more channels through the filter. Filters are usually engineered to have a certain resistance at maximum flow (and this is used to determine the CFM rating), and will always have less resistance at lower flow.

I don't think the either filter will make a difference to the pulling power, however. It's going to be labyrinth path from the intake to the exhaust that affects it most.

true thanks, i think i might up the size to the TD-150 now since the fan hasnt shipped yet. If i need roughly 150-200CFM of Centrifugal power than 333 of Mixed vent power should be equivalent if not better? and hopefully quieter, and more power efficient. i think?

TD-150 is loud... honestly same as a 6" ValuLine or WindTunnel

250w, I'd maybe try that 100xs, 6x16 filter if you can. Just think of ways to optimize the exhaust flow and maximize intake area. If this is sitting in a temp controlled room your ambient will be nice and low, which helps a lot.

this will be in my basement which is pretty damn cold all year round. Id be doing people a favor by adding a little heat. The only issue is ill be hiding in plain sight (fish tank stand) so noise and smell are pretty critical. Im thinking of trying to get the quietest large centrifugal fan i can find and speed controlling it down but... I have a hunch that still may not be enough. where's freezerboy when you need him! lol

He'll tell you that his centrifugal could be heard across the street by his neighbor and that the S&P's are louder than you might think. ;-)

Let the 100xs ship it has a shot at hiding in plain sight, whereas any centrifugal (or larger S&P) needs to be behind a wall to be drowned out.

well, i think im still gonna upsize i told them to cancel the order so i get some time to rethink the whole static pressure ordeal since i was only thinking about CFM's before. I have a decent amount of space to work with and the fan will be enclosed in the tank stank. so maybe i can silence it enough. Obviously to run a fish tank there is going to be some humming from pumps etc.

You also get rubber dampening mounting feet for that fan I think..with acoustic ducting that would help. The 125 is the one, on a slower speed even maybe..

Ended up getting the 6" I'm going to try to speed control it down with a non PWM controller. Is this a bad idea since it says not to use any speed controller on it? I feel like they only say that so no idiots use a PWM controller and fry it. Will a variac type controller damage it you think?
