Holy crap that is really really awesome. The next person who says things were so cool in the 70s or 80s should get thrown out the modern airlock. Science is fricking awesome...

So how high is the ridge its sitting on? its pretty hard to judge distances in places you'll never go or never have been.

Skullznroses.... Let me take you back a ways. Mekong River, 1969, nite patrol, quiet peaceful cruise..shit goes dreadfully wrong. Incoming automatic fire and a B-50 rocket, five die, two don't. I wake up in a hospital room, tv on in the corner, two guys walkin' around and grab-assin' in front of an American flag on tv. Great special effects. In Nam there was no news or current events. A gorgeous oriental nurse walks into my room and I ask her what the movie is...it's not a movie, it's the real deal!?!? I been watchin the moon all my life, my Dad all his and grandpa and.......for millenia all us old farts lookin' at the moon at nite never figurin' some day a couple goons would be up there goofin' of on tv! I knew we had science to make a warship look like a rowboat or a flotilla to soviet radar or sonar. We had burst communication and encription, science was flyin' and we were along for the ride. We had bombs that would take triple-canopy and turn it into an lz for rotary wing with one big bang. We HAD fast-moving science, marvelous, stupifying science. We are each living thru our time and science is, and has been, the DRIVING force of our evolution thru All of these times. The catalyst and the harbinger of even bigger and better. In your time it IS the bigger and better, but in great-grandpa's.....you REALLY think that damn thing could fly? Pretty big then, too. The 60's, 70's, and 80's WERE great times for scientific advancement, and so is the present. Not tryin' to "put you down", or "in your place", friend...just tryin' to explain that science has been with us and has been utterly AMAZING since the old-timers figured out how to build fire and chip flint. It IS what drives me, and I've run nuclear power plants and programmed CNC metalworking machinery. I, like you, appreciate science and stand IN AWE of what it has just done on Mars.

Is there plans/time frame for sending people, or has all that funding quarreling stopped that?

edit: I looked it up it says it would take 180 days to get to mars.

you would need an oxygen generator or something on Mars, right? there's not much of an atmosphere there from what I read.

just looks inhospitable at best...like Tattooine from Star Wars

It would be awesome if someone had a few small plants going on the ISS...maybe like 4 under a 250 or something. Not sure what country...is there a Dutch astronaut? I'm sure it's happened they just don't leak it. Has to have happened by now.

Freakin spectacular! We're living in amazing times, friends. :)

As far as a manned mission to Mars any time soon... I doubt it. At least not the USA. The cost would be way big to get a man or woman there, and for what? There's not much a human could do that a remote controlled robot can't at this point, except the robot can do it for way longer with less complications and for a fraction of the cost or risk. Although if another country announces plans to do so, then things could easily change. Whoever gets a person there first is gonna get huge bragging rights.
