Any experience with these brands?

Roots Organics Soilless Coco Mix
Rasta Bob's Coco Fiber
Organic Coco Planting Chips

How do the chips compare to the brick? My local hydro store only has Botanicare bricks and bales, but a quick search turned up a hydro store across town that has Canna. Is it worth the drive across town ($5-6 in gas) to get Canna coco instead of Botanicare?

Planning to use 100% coco in 2 or 3 gal smartpots with blumats. Are chips better than brick in any way? I am also considering 80% coco 20% perlite if I go with 3 gal smartpots??? A lot of people say straight coco is the best but a lot of people cut it with perlite???

never tried the botanicare but i know loads of growers who have used canna with superb results  worth the drive imo

Canna bagged coco is good. Ready to use no need to rinse. Have tried the HD bricks but they seemed to lack behind the bagged stuff..

Green Lung, what do you put in the 5.5 gals of water? If Anythin.. And do you rinse the botanicare bricks?

Seems like finding a brick source that is ready to go is harder to find these days.

Yes I do add a full dose of veg nutes, cal mag or tap water tp pre -charge the coco. I personally use H&g cocos and have used maxibloom in the past with a heavy initial charge and didn't see any burning in my small clones.

No need to wash bonticare blocks just add the 5.5 plus nutes ect to your rubbermaid and come back later and you can break it apart by hand, it wiil have soaked up all the water. You're ready to plant now. and i also clone in this same stuff with great results(charged and all).

Thank's Jack. So the consensus is Gold Label and Canna kick coco ass. When you come to the end of your run do you use anything to break down the roots like enzymes? could you explain how you do it. Say for a 9,10 week strain when would you start preping the coco, week 7,8? 6 run's is really good. i'm building some beds either 3 x 6ft or 4 x ft? lined with root block fabric, simular to your smart pot beds. Keep it killer. mack.
What we do is last 2 weeks start running Cannazym then after we harvest pull all the roots we use a small 3 fork hand pick and get out as much roots as we can then water the beds with Veg base nutes at 500 to 700 ppm base nute only and full dose Cannazym when we plants the rooted cuttings in the bed hit them with the same watering base and cannazym. Then our normal routine of base nutes boosters and ones a week Capulator tea. We have had zero issues doind it this way. jack

i have used bcuzz, canna, black gold, and roots organic coco mix.

with canna coco nutes.

the roots organic mix sucked. no thanks.

the bcuzz and canna are pretty equal
i can get bcuzz for 35 a bag in maui... no can get canna coco.
ive seen the H&G stuff at the shop for same cost as bcuzz sure its the same stufff...

i get black gold straight coco bags 2cuft per bag at 18 per... its a nice fine coco with good moisture retention. and bang for the buck is great too.

if you can get black gold, try it.

and i always use my cocos striaght out of the bag. i know bricks are cheaper but theres more work in the prep... less work for me is better!!!!

good luck

I've used Canna for years without any probs. It always tested the best. Recently I had issues that ended up being due to B-cuzz coc, which tested like 2000ppm's out of the bag.

House and garden tested very good. Royal Gold tested only OK with like 550ppm's I think.

I had a thread a while back about testing your coco. Basically, coco is coco, the differences being the coarseness and whether it's clean or not.

Test whatever coco you get, flush it if needed.

Also, I have found that instead of pre-charging coco, that using extra Cal-Mag when potting into fresh coco works just as well.

I simply pot up like it's dirt, use 5-7ml of Botanicare Cal-Mag on the first watering, and it's off to the races!

I'm having a bunch of issues with botanicare bails. Not sure if its me or the bails but I'm gonna buy some canna coco and see how it works for me. Ph, and some kind of issue with the coco turning white-yellowish and smelling funny.

Anyone heard of Cocotek? My local shop only carries that brand....

Interesting info. I hadn't heard of the brand till I visited a local hydro shops website. I'm too scared to visit their store but thought if I could get them to ship it may be worth while. Then I realized that was their only brand of coco on the site. I don't know if they can get others or not buts that's all they list online.
