Concert organizers pull plug on Springsteen and McCartney in middle of encore

British bureaucrats sure screwed the pooch on this one; this thread doesn't concern the concert, just the bad decision to end it when THEY wanted to.

In what may be the dumbest enforcement of a curfew in rock and roll history, organizers of a Bruce Springsteen concert in London literally pulled the plug on the show during an encore featuring special guest Paul McCartney.

"I gotta tell you, I've been trying to do this for 50 years," Springsteen told the crowd of 76,000 while introducing McCartney. The pair--backed by the E Street Band and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello--launched into the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There."

But Springsteen had already exceeded the three-hour time limit set by London's Westminster Council for the Hyde Park concert, according to the BBC. The sound was cut off at approximately 10:40 p.m. local time as the Springsteen and McCartney performed "Twist and Shout."

"It made for a slightly bizarre, anti-climactic end to what had been a fantastic show," the BBC said. "The band obviously couldn't tell from on stage that the sound had been shut off."

During the band's second song with McCartney, "a drably dressed man with sensible hair could be seen waving frantically at the back of the stage, indicating the rock legends' time was drawing to a close," CNN reported. "The sound suddenly dampened, and went quiet. At first, the Boss didn't seem to notice. He attempted to address the crowd, apparently unaware that they couldn't hear him. But as it became clear that there was no amplification, he and lead guitarist Stevie Van Zandt played what looked to be a brief a cappella goodnight for the benefit of the front rows, shrugged, and left the stage."

After the show, Van Zandt slammed the decision.

"Seriously, when did England become a police state?" Van Zandt wrote on Twitter. "Is there just too much fun in the world? We would have been off by 11 if we'd done one more. On a Saturday night! Who were we disturbing?"

The guitarist and former "Sopranos" co-star added: "I'm sorry but I have to be honest: I'm pissed. Like I said, it didn't ruin the great night. But when I'm jamming with McCartney, don't bug me!"

Concertgoers agreed, to put it mildly.

"Springsteen and McCartney," Richard James, a reporter for London's Metro, tweeted. "Only in Britain could a local council pull the plug on the greatest artists of the last 50 years giving it all."

"Ashamed to be British right now," Stephen Merchant, an actor and comedian, wrote.

On Sunday, the city council and concert organizers released separate statements, scrambling to deflect criticism.

"Concert organizers, not the council, ended last night's concert in Hyde Park to comply with their license, which [allowed] them to run the concert until 10:30 p.m.," the city council said in a statement on Sunday. "Licenses are granted until certain times to protect residents in the area from noise late at night."

"It was unfortunate that the three hour plus performance by Bruce Springsteen was stopped right at the very end but the curfew is laid down by the authorities in the interest of the public's health and safety," the organizers said. "Road closures around Hard Park are put in place at specific times to make sure everyone can exit the area in a safety."

This is not the first time London's ridiculous curfews have hampered a major public event. Earlier this month at Wimbledon, an 11 p.m. curfew threatened to halt Andy Murray's quarterfinal match, but tournament officials allowed the match to spill a few minutes over.

After the match, Murray--who won--said: "I would have been happy to spot any fine the club may get as long as we could finish the match."

Springsteen, it seemed, was never given that option.

"It sounds to me like an excessively efficacious decision," London mayor Boris Johnson told a London radio station Sunday. "You won't get that during the Olympics. If they'd have called me, my answer would have been for them to jam in the name of the Lord!"

I can't believe what puckered up asses those particular brits have, and correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Paul McCartney knighted back in '97, doesn't that carry even the most modest amount of clout fer christ's sake?

That story is so outrageous that it seems like a fake Onion story, but I know that S4L doesn't pull those kind of shenanigans with his posting.

Another example of the limitless potential for humans to be stupid.

Springsteen and McCartney, 2 of the greatest rock-n-rollers ever. Given absolutely no fucking respect. Whoever turned the power off needs to have their asses kicked.

hiya, no unfortunatly this is fact, its been all over the news here in london, local councils do seem to act like fucking nazis, a couple of years back i saw radiohead at victoria park[open air gig] and although radiohead were note perfect [imo] and was a great concert [i went on last nite on the tues] but it just wasnt loud enough, those who complained were told because it was in or near residential areas, it could only be so loud, again fucking health and safety nazis but its beyond me why this happened in such a large venue like hyde park or perhaps the queen was in residence and didnt like springsteen:), i am sure if john lennon, jerry garcia, jimi hendrix, and elvis, came back from the dead for an encore,it still wouldnt make a blind bit of difference to these health and safety wankers, england especially london a police state? you fucking bet, have you seen how many cctv cameras we have in the capitol, fucking scary, rant over..... peace and safe growing s2

I think they've heard from enough folks and both responsible parties are each in denial (which means their eyes have been opened!) about being @ fault. I believe they learned a lesson and will lets future shows close out on their own.

or just have a few guys like this guarding the power grid.......

or limit your outdoor shows to rural areas, go before the town council & convince them of the reward of reaping tax dollars (pounds) and all the services revenue they'll make and then get your approval to rock.......

if there's couple of homes nearby that don't want to hear the music then offer to put them up in a swanky hotel all expenses (don't touch the mini-bar!) paid.

a well organized show brings in tens of thousands of £ to the community businesses. gas stations need to be full with gas & all of their convenience store stuff which they run out of anyway. restaurants, hotels; nearest grocery stores will run out of many items.

go rural or get Sir Richard to buy up any pesky towns.

as far as Having Bruce & Paul KO'd from their encores? I think it sucked. I never really liked Springsteens music & never called him the 'Boss', never once. I do however have great respect for him & what he gives back to the people time and again doing benefits and giving donations, Bruce & The E Street Band ??? A-1

Paul McCartney? I hardly listened to anything he did post breakup, couldn't help hearing it on the radio but I got into jazz/fusion by then. Pauls career has thrived & I'm sure he's donated his share of time and money for all his causes.

They both deserved a lot more consideration than that and then there's the fans feelings, in reality they were the victims, the show was taken from the masses, folks waiting in confusion/uncertainty for quite awhile wondering if the show will resume when the amps/mikes are finally fixed, yeah right!!!
