taming a hermie trait, maybe

all right, here's the deal, i had this very nice brainwreck femme
except she wasn't perfectly female, which means hermie with good smoke
i have run a couple of the S1 seeds with mixed results
1 hermied, 1 didn't, and the hermie had some pretty nasty traits
the pure femme offspring was very nice, low yielder though

so i had dusted the original she-male with some cali-o pollen, 2 different males
best effort that the seed isn't just more S1's, no guarantee though
and so the 2 day old scrawny seedling

Imho it's a crap shoot igrowone. Logic would say that crossing an S1 to a stable strain would reduce the probability of the herm trait surfacing, BUT it will still be a recessive trait that could be expressed if the plants are stressed.

Cali-O might just straighten out the he/she, or at least make it workable. Good luck bro!

thanks for peeking in here festivus, and crap shoot is the right phrase
what it came down to, is these 2 strains have had my best medicine so far, may have been a little more sativa in the brainwreck
selecting by effect, other traits will just have to be dealt with as best they can

day 9

another week of seedling fun, it's getting interesting if nothing else
strange mix of lighter and darker green, and looks like a pattern
it's not burn, and the soil is well nutrient loaded, doesn't look like deficiency
more like the tiger(or zebra) of MJ
which makes me suspicious this may be a S1 seed, S1 would be more likely to show odd recessives?
but 2 cali-o males in the mix, can't be excluded just yet
does look somewhat more sativa than my usual, i'll hang with that thought for the moment

so now we have a little bit of a freak show, seems i have a plant with some variegation, different colors on the leaves
strange turn of events, gotta think this would be more likely from a S1 seed than a cross
but the 2 possible parents weren't that different in appearance, so time will tell, it does look healthy
kind of a silver reflection of the leaves in general

vegging at a good clip, and once i get to the 5/6 node point, into flower it goes
the variegation patterns have stopped for the most part, it has some patterns, but nothing extreme
which is probably good, some variegated plants become freaks(from the examples i've seen)
sativa look is showing up the new leaves, cautiously optimistic on that
which is the look the cali-o males had, maybe this isn't a S1 seed

flower - day 10

flower - day 10

well into flower now, and kind of an explosion of things happening
1st thing, sativa traits are zooming out, very sativa looking the further you go up the branch/plant
and stretching like you'd expect sativa to stretch, 1 inch a day, maybe a touch more
and no sex after 10 days, not exceptional, but in keeping with sativa traits
which brings me to the question of the grow, what do i have here? a S1 of brainwreck or a BW x cali-o?
pollen flew during the breeding, so certainty here is not an option
the cali-o males did have the smaller leaf deal up high, though that's not a particularly unusual trait
but they were quite skinny up high, but not with such a sativa look
maybe the smell will show up and give me some more insights, there's basically zero smell right now

2+ week of flower

2+ week of flower

17 days of flower, time to make some 'educated' guesses about who dad was
my 2 S1 grows of the hermie mom were both indica hybrid looking plants
both had the smell that mom had, a reeky stench in veg, wasn't all that nice
quite different from this plant who seems to have next to zero smell
and has much more of a sativa look, currently manageable in my small grow space, going to be tight though
on the other hand, there are variegated leaves, i'd think that would be more likely to show in a S1 with the recessives popping out
best guess is this is actually a BW x Cali-o cross, guesses are free

3+ weekf of flower

another week, another look into the mysteries of the genetics i'm wrestling with
first off, no sign of hermie roosters, not a trace, gotta be happy with that
but very mystified if S1 or not, the brainwreck mom(and maybe dad) supposedly have a good amount of sativa genetics
not so clear about the possible nirvana cali-o father, sure didn't look like it had much sativa
smell is no help, doesn't smell like either of the genetics lines
doesn't smell like anything actually, not unless rubbed hard
leaf burns are from cfl's, it's stretching hard and trying to keep it contained, scars of battle

been thinking back to grows gone by, some way back when mexican bagseed ruled in the USA
some similarities to those old mexican bagseed grows, or so i hope
because some of the old mexican was the best weed i ever had
of course, that wasn't the usual, just a few mexican bags were primo
the primo cost pretty much what the schwag cost, but those were different days

5 -12 weeks of flower

5 -12 weeks of flower

getting the feeling i'm close to or over the half way point of flower
surprised, was prepared for a longer slog, no complaints about a little bit of indica to help hurry things along
a good sized plant by my micro standards, crossed the 30 inch line, which is awfully close to a full house inside my chamber
picture outside the chamber, color leaving the big fan leaves
i am giving a good feed of nitrogen from an alfalfa tea(and other ingredients), but i don't feed heavy, like clean tasting buds

edit - was meant to be 5 1/2 weeks of flower, but the few who follow probably knew that

I have to ask..why so heavy on the nitrogen?
probably not that heavy, just heavier compared to my prior grows
a half and half mix of alfalfa tea and bone meal tea, so it should be adequate nitrogen, just trying to tune my game a little better

day 65

6 1/2 weeks of flower, quite a strong surge in bulking up
this could be a large yielder for a micro grow
and ripening much quicker than i had been thinking a few weeks ago
which takes me back to introspecting on the genetics
the strong yield points to a hybrid, i.e. my pollen brush beat the hermie roosters on this seed
i've changed my mind about a half dozen times, but guessing is free
the 2 S1's i ran from this female where not close to this vigor, so once again i think i have my 1st cross female

keep breeding it out.

I know there is documentation somewhere stating it taking 3 generations to breedout the hermie traits but be 100% that it isn't an environmental thing versus genetic.

7 1/2 weeks of flower

good advice medmaker
she looks seed worthy to me, but then, most females do, i just like plenty of genetics
but my freeze dried pollen has given up the ghost, lasted about 2 years, reg freezer isn't perfect for that

pistils are turning, and harvest is speeding closer
quite taken with this burst of ripening speed
now to another try at classifying this girl, the odor is zero if you don't touch the plant
damn good stealth candidate, but when rubbed she puts out
some weedy smell(roadside type weed) and some onion, neither of which are particularly good
however, i think i smell a hint of spice in there, mexican spice maybe?
pic from chamber, she's getting very heavy up there and moving is risky

8 1/2 weeks - flower

gliding in for what is i hope a smooth landing/harvest
1st the positive, no hermie showing, looks like the hermie was tamed for this 1 seed
at 8 1/2 weeks of flower and the ripening is fast and looking good
smell isn't stellar, but not going to sweat it, cure changes things a lot
i'm thinking close to 1 more week, but i will cut no plant before its time
obligatory bud light can in picture for size comparison, used it in every final grow pic

bud time

bud time

9 1/2 weeks and i made the cut, plant looked ripe to me though the trichs could have been more mature
but the genetics hadn't shown too much of a paranoid streak, calculated risk
a very small side bud sampled through a vaporizer gave a strong 'up', fine change from all the indica dominants i've had
now to the original goal, taming the hermie, and that has been accomplished, at least for this grow
i had dusted a side bud of a femme brainwreck with Cali-O pollen
but mom was a hermie, which means the seeds probably have some S1's mixed in
the final tally looks to be around 15g dry, which wasn't very large, i do get around 28g for a good hybrid grow
which flips my opinion to this being a S1 seed, so the hermie taming may have been just luck, 2 other S1 seeds had a 50-50 outcome on the hermie trait
a final pic of the girl and the harvest, mini smoke report after the cure

been in the curing jars for 2 weeks or so, time to sum up this grow
has a hermie been tamed? tamed for this grow, not a hint of a rooster
but i think luck intervened, i suspect this was a S1 seed, not the brainwreck x cali-o cross i hoped for
yield was OK, but not quite what i would expect for a hybrid, but that's pretty subjective
the smell/odor was funky though cure made the odor nicer, the flavor is nearly non existant, odd
my other S1's had odor traits in this vein, i think balance of evidence is for an S1
such is the ups and downs of hermie genetics,
the smoke is quite good, some sativa up but pretty good for my anxiety issues, a very calming S1 pheno
