Horsetail as a areation component?

There are a group of unrelated plants that were discovered by different groups around the world as having medicinal properties and Yarrow is one of those plants. Aloe vera, Neem trees, Stinging Nettle, Comfrey, etc. are just a few in this group.

What's even more fascinating is that the timespan is fairly close, i.e. over a 500 year period more or less and for many groups they were isolated and had little contact with the other groups and plants.

Plants today are and have been the major source of pharmaceutical medicines. Remember the discovery of Taxus from the Yew tree a few years back? That one save a huge amount of ancient forests in Oregon.

Missing your presence on that other board. Had to come figure out who you were here...
I got an interesting mutant plant, I took pictures and posted it today, in case you ever go back to the O Journals, take a peek.

I hear that Skunk. LOL

I knowz me a little ol lady who takes fresh comfrey leaf baths after she works all day on her land out in the middle of know-where...she swears it's an anti-inflammatory....you've got to be a complete asshole devoid of respect or blind in the face of wisdom to argue with a little ol lady who's 70 something that works like she does....if she says it works then us childrenz do pay attention.

Good Stuff. Not that I am going to bath in comfrey myself, but we should not lose all of that home-remedy knowledge that was so common in the past.

A cute vagina??....
Seriously though..thanks for the info on that... I never knew.

The humor never ends I see !

Thanks to CC I just finished (but am making more right now) making a comfrey syrup. A 3 gallon pail stuffed to the gills with fresh leaf netted me a little over a cup, maybe a cup and a half of the syrup extract.

CC, what is a good dilution ratio?

Scrappy, good idea on the thread. Do you have enough horsetail growing where you live to make this feasible? I also like the idea of adding the fresh Comfrey to a soil mix - i think I'm going to give this a try. It's that time of year - I have a ton of it around right now.

I believe that once you hit 50 posts then this restriction is lifted.

RE: Comfrey Syrup

We harvested over 2.5 cubic yards of Comfrey over the weekend. The last thing that I need is more Comfrey tea - this is insane!

So I purchased two 50-gallon Rubbermaid trash cans, drilled drain holes in the top one, loaded it with macerated Comfrey (Weed Whacker) and snapped the lit tight - no water at all. My intention is to use the dilution rate from my new 'mates' in England who seem to pretty much know everything there is to know about growing, harvesting and using Comfrey.

"They say" that you want to add 1 cup of the syrup to 15 cups of clear water = 1 gallon. That's what they say.

I'd still go by color of the final tea though - a little darker than 'sun tea' or something close.

Here's another one for you to try - take a few leaves and chop them up and this time use 3 or 4 times the water (by volume) as the amount of Comfrey leaves. Regular deal.

Beginning on the 3rd morning, pull a cup of the fresh tea and mix as I noted above and apply to some tomato plants in your raised beds. Follow up next week where the Comfrey tea isn't 'finished' but it ain't exactly 'fresh' either. See what you think......

Heh......

Hi Jerry, thanks for stopping by, nice to hear from you. In some of the river bottoms around where I live there are largish areas of horsetail growing wild. I could fill up buckets in no time and still not bother the native ecology too much. After gascanstan posted I kind of gave up on using it as a areation conponent. I did not think it would decompose that fast. I learned something I guess.

I am making both comfrey tea and comfrey syrup myself. I stuffed a 2.5 gallon plastic empty kitty litter jug full of comfrey leaves, and I continue to add to it as it rots. So far there is only around a cup of syrup, but I have high hopes, lol. I have read the syrup works best at 1/15 ratio. I also have read 1 oz of syrup to one gallon of water works well, if that is easier to remember.

Still on comfrey. I have used it in tea form on my veggie garden this year along with other teas of alfalfa, horsetail, kelp and so on. Just like our indoor gardens the plants love those teas. Although my yard smells like sewer for a couple hours after using it, and my small dog rolls in it, lol.....scrappy

LOL - a young couple was out for a walk the other night with their young son soon after we dumped 30 gallons on the raised beds

"Mommy - it smells like poop!"

Yes indeed, Grasshopper!

Oh, I know all about the comfrey tea smell *lol*

So this is where all of you cats have gone off to - its fantastic to see you guys - Mrs. Skunk!

I just cleaned out my inbox too. Darn rules. Anyhow -

CC, I made my syrup the same exact way - Bucket with some holes filled with comfrey leaves, which drains into a lower bucket. If you have that much leaf why don't you make a mess of syrup? Easy to store and will get you through the winter. I am going to work on drying a bunch as well for later use. My wife has been giving it to our horse in small amounts for her hoof problems too.

Scrappy, I think I may have found a large area of the horsetail up by where I am working. I'm 99% positive but I just need to confirm that that's actually what it is.

Again, great to see you Old Guys...hehe

For those of you who don't know Jerry - he's a master organic gardener. Almost without peer other than a couple of old drunks sitting along an icy river perhaps!

LMAO

Now if the "Grand Master Gardener" status was coming from Advanced Nutrients I might take it seriously...;)
