The government of Uruguay wants to remove the profits from the illegal drug trade, and is considering legalization of the distribution of cannabis by the government itself! Note that Uruguay has no law against personal use, so this addresses only the distribution of marijuana. Therefore the government will sell it not only to medical patients but to anyone who registers for it. The new law apparently doesn't address who would supply the government with marijuana or whether it would be legal to grow it at home.

Under the plan, only the government would be allowed to sell marijuana and only to adults who register on a government database, letting officials keep track of their purchases over time.

Minister of Defense Eleuterio Fernandez Huidobro told reporters in Montevideo that the measure aims to weaken crime in the country by removing profits from drug dealers and diverting users from harder drugs.

"We're shifting toward a stricter state control of the distribution and production of this drug," Fernandez said. "It's a fight on both fronts: against consumption and drug trafficking. We think the prohibition of some drugs is creating more problems to society than the drug itself."

What do you think of governments selling marijuana? (poll added)

Saw this last night.. Figured it would end up on IC forum. It sounds ok apart from the gov. registration data-base.

Don't particularly like that part. More government tracking. I really don't like the idea of the government being involved in this. Does the government sell alcohol, or other drugs?
I think not.
I want the government off my back, and we all probably know that if the government gets in the cannabis business, they will be controlling the potency, or the amounts, or the frequency of buys.
I don't like it. It's a naturally growing plant, and there should be no difference between laws governing it than corn or broccoli.

One topic I did not see covered was those that grow for personal use. Would they be allowed to or would they be forced to buy from the goverment...
I could go along with the goverment selling as long as growering for personal use is allowed. JMHO

Id rather see a free market approach to legalisation, something that allows the small mom & pop shop flourish. Not everything has to be big govt, or big corporations.

brudda here in the us the states that have mmj programs

{More government tracking} is what happens when we register with our state. cali i think is the only real wild card not requireing its mmj patients to register with the state. state i live in on the other hand requires it to be fully registered. i have a nice state issued id card looks like my DL lol

As some say about Uruguay, because it is a small Country in a corner of the Earth, they can make these changes..

I salute them. With or without the registration. Although in the case of a grower, this info could be used, I assume..?

The plan apparently initially calls for monitoring of "Use," where people who exceed a certain number of packs of joints will be sought out for drug addiction counseling, or some such.

Also, the initial plan calls for gov't growing exclusively.

its that potential of a state, or privately run, mandatory rehab system that makes me think that "legalization" could actually easily remove more rights than it frees up..

seems like so many want this to work so bad they wont even think about all the pitfalls that there may be embedded in such changes,,

it could work, but why do we need governments to tell us what plants we can grow?? appears a very slippery slope to me anyway..

governments just contract in the big corporations that are funded by the people that own and print money for that same government,, its just business..

Actually Uruguay encourages foreign nationals to move to Uruguay. You only need to prove income of $500 a month and you can live there indefinitely. It has one of the easiest immigration policies in the world. I've considered moving there.

Realize that Uruguay now has a Socialist leader and government. President José Mujica was once a leftist guerilla fighter and spent 14 years in a military prison. He's been implementing a lot of reforms, taking the country away from US and Corporate influence, as other Latin American countries are doing successfully.

So he is attempting to cut out the gangs and criminality with this law.

Neighbor Argentina has also decriminalized cannabis and given the IMF the Finger.
