leaves raised on seedlings

I germinated some seeds about 9 days ago. There are in small rockwool cubes in a propagator under a CFL. They have one set of new leaves and starting to grow the second set. The leaves have started to raise up. They look healthy but raised, about 45 degrees upwards from horizontal. Any idea what could be causing this e.g. too hot.cold, lack/excess of water...?

When you post in the infirmary the best thing to do is fill out the infirmary questionnaire which you paste into your post and fill in the answers. That way not only do you get more responses but they tend to be more accurate. Good luck to you!

*NOTE: Please Cut And Paste only the section that applies and add your response. The more information you can give the better and faster people can help you out.Pictures should be added to every thread to ensure a proper diagnosis, when using pictures please ensure your HPS if using one is not turned on while taking pictures, as the lighting hides the plants problems. If they are forming a v shape there is nothing wrong. That is normal for plants to do when there nice and healthy.. Not all plants will exhibit this behavior nothing to worry about. A pic would be nice to see.

Pics are a bare minimum for decent plant diagnosis.

Not that difficult. This is what an average seedling should look like after 5-6 days from seed in soil. Seedlings can bend and twist funny sometimes, no worries unless you see burn or disease.

I cant enlarge your pic to see it... Here is another one. See how the 2ND set of leaves are v shaped thats normal growth

Your pic is much better then mine! I don't know whether the seedling or the cup has the better shade of green. Mine was just a VLC snapshot of an old video I had, I'll have to find a different program to grab pics off my high quality vids.

I've 2 pics of one of the seedlings. This is the worst one. Leaves are raised and dried out at the tips.

I normally have them in a propagator under a CFL, the tips of seedlings anywhere between 2-3 inches from the bulbs. The bulbs don't emit much heat although my digital thermometer says it about 32C. Room temp is about 18C.

Early guess is too hot, wrong pH and low humidity.

On the bright side,, you know what unhappy plants look like.

You need to get closer to golden,,

yours look so healthy. have you doing anything to prevent algae growing on the tops of the cubes? mine get all green and smily very fast.

Grow lights make alge grow, so if you cover the top of the block, that will keep them alge free. (mostly alge free anyway.....)

Floroecent lights are great for seedlings,,, cooler too.

pH is important - more so if your out of the golden range around 6, but seed starts seem to like my 7.0-ish pH tap water. When pH is too high or too low, it interferes with the plants ability to take nute in. - I like to allow some swing between 5.7 to 6.2 or so.

The last time I bought fresh Rockwook cubes, I'm pretty sure I also got a case of root aphids. Hope you never see those bastards!

Sickly plants are no fun, I know.

1. Those cubes look soaked~~~Too wet

2. 2inches is too close, probably why those leaves are crispy~~~Too hot

Fix those things and you should be fine. Might want to chuck those if you have more seed stock and start fresh. I personally think the first month or so of a plants' life is very important in overall health, and can effect in positive or negative ways how that plant will do in the future. IE a plant grown not to it's potential may not be a easily cloned as one that was grown to perfection from the start. Kinda like dropping a baby on it's head, they still may learn their ABCs but it might be a little slower than the other kids. And if you drop them mulitple times, you better invest in helmets and bibs.

Oooooh...ya, scratch that. That plant is not happy. Do you have an fresh air circulation in there?

Ya plenty of fresh air.

I try to maintain the pH at 5.5 but it rises to about 6.0 and I need to bring it down again.

I've since transplanted them into the big cubes and they are under a 600W MH.

Too much light Amigo,,,,

newborns don't go to the beach or tanning center and stay healthy do they?

Naaaa we give em soft gentle light and baby food - and then, only when they get hungary.

And wet roots are not healthy roots - roots need air as much as they need water.

You can stack 2 blocks up to drain the top one.

Give em what they need, not what you think will make em grow.

What should I cover them with? Does covering them not restrict air getting to them? You do not have them covered yet you have no algae.

hey

hey

dj stevo , leafs up means overheated for sure

put fan-s more fans and more fresh air m8

a much as you can , as well if your lights are not fluorescent put them on bigger distance from the plants

only fluorescent lights can be placed on 5-10cm from the little plant

all other must be on bigger distance
