There is some algae on the roots and in the water. Destructive?

I just covered the whole thing so no light will get to the roots. Will this kill the algae in the water and roots?

H202 from the hydro store is way too expensive. Bleach is your friend.

while the algae is dying from the lack of light I would recommend increasing aeration as the decomposing algae will be absorbing the oxygen in your res.
Usually the best way of dealing with algae is to prevent it. algae requires water light and nutrients remove one of these factors and you will have no algae while poisoning alage tends to create other problems.
algae itself isn't too destructive (other than eating some nuts)but it can harbor fungus gnats and other vermin that are destructive

Drugstore hydrogen peroxide Is cheap.
And there's many here that use it,some dose their plants daily. Search it and you'll find a scedual that's comfortable for you.

Baquacil Oxidizer from the pool and spa store @ 2ml/gal. 27% H2O2 for $20/gallon.
Bleach @ 0.5 ml/gal
Either way your roots will be squaeky clean.

H202 has many more benefits than just cleaning the root zone/rez imho. Well worth the extra buck....

bleach + water + scrub brush to remove algae in the res is what i do ever few weeks. gets it done right. does anyone add h202 to their res (with the nutes and water)? general hydro nutes and or i think super snow ultra recommends few ml's per gallon to the res...havent tried it though. its the powder mold that has me concerned lol

i never worry about algae, if you lightproof your res now you should be fine. i dont even light proof my water, just run it. ppl tend to worry about algae too much, its a low priority. just lightproof your shit and forget about it.

a biofilter with a good bacteria population helps to prevent other water quality problems, i prefer it over a dead res. my ph is rock solid and ive never seen root rot before....been runnin same system for last 5 years. also i run 120gallons and dont change my res during grows. waste of water/time/nutes

I never add h202 to my res, it's pointless when DM zone or bleach can be used. No benefit IMO.

Go to the Infirmary and look at the brown slime sticky thread. Myself and others worked to figure out the brown slime.

Here's how I don't get it anymore. All water goes thru 3 stage RO. Then into barrels and gets run thru a UV sterilizer from Petsmart (pet store...look in aquarium section) and then gets a Physan 20 dosage. Trust your water will be clean and clear as you'll ever want. Just gotta invest the money and time to clean tap water properly.

Green algae is a different problem btw. Ive never had a green algae problem and you wont either if you use this method. The brown slime algae is way worse and will also be cleaned from your water. That system cleans out EVERYTHING from tap water.
