And it's still cost-effective (and more importantly, necessary) to have humans work the plants.

You can't remove the human element from all levels of production of all things. You know what's next to the sprocket-making machine in your fantasy example? A human.

you know there are plenty of things the guys in the vert section don't really see eye to eye on. for example me and the gentleman who's thread we are posting in don't do everything exactly the same and although i have learned a lot form DHF and applied it to my set up i don't do things exactly like he would. somehow we still manage to exchange information without sounding like we think the other guy is stupid ....... because they are not.

if there were not dozens of good growers around here who love blumats you might be getting a little less flak, but there are, and they share information so the guys who want to push the lines a little further can do that.

I guess I'm the idiot for having high standards. It takes me no more than 10-20 minutes each day to water my plants. I guess I'm not really seeing the benefit of a "set it and forget it**" system that costs $500+ to properly install (pumps, lines, hoses, quick disconnect fittings, Blumats, etc), only to save me 10-20 minutes of work, while still requiring me to be in the grow daily inspecting everything in case of disaster. If anyone thinks this makes me a stupid or a noob then whatever, I don't care.

DHF is here b/c I asked his grumpy old ass to drop some knowledge on me and guide me on the path toward nirvana... He has a lot more leeway in my thread than you GYB.

The truth is, I could tell by your posts that you lack the experience to know why your idea won't work, but I was just being nice and letting it go... The ability to build a system that runs itself with fail-safes isn't anything new. My boy RespectGreen runs his entire room from a laptop computer. He manually waters b/c he wants to. He just hit 1gpw with 4k in hoods, in organic soil mix. You CAN NOT remove the human element from the grow for an extended period of time, and still expect everything to turn out 100%. You exponentially increase the risk of crop failure by leaving your plants unattended. I can barely leave my plants alone for 1 week. Now, eventually everything will be so automated that I only need to pop in every 2 weeks, but I'll still be there every week... Why? B/c computers can't read plants.
Do you have sensor that can tell you if you have a cal/mag deficiency? Or maybe a sensor for mites and aphids? You should probably put a robotic arm on the ceiling that can train the plants away from the light... I mean really... Then to get some ROI on said system, and make up for all the missed crops, you're going to have to bring said system to market... Which is a completely different challenge. That not even touching on all the different growing styles...

Cannabis has arrived where it is today in human hands.... That's not about to change. Like Silver said, commercial farmers in the US have some of the best equipment money can buy... tractors that can run themselves with GPS... but the human element is still very active in the grow.

I've found a lot of your comments humorous and that's why I've played along so far... but start attacking anyone like you did and HGO is gonna come out of hiding and handle this, k? I'm sure that you're still determined to build your system... So take it from someone your age and probably more educated, until you actually have something to show, sit down and enjoy the show. Learn what you can and apply it to your design. Then come back after you have it patented and everyone is using your design... and then brag. Your reply that 10-20 minutes a day does not add up to much is way off the mark.

When I step out the door to work I expect to make $50-0 dollars a hour. Lets just say that you are only paying an employee $10 dollars a hour. (to keep it simply we won't count the additional expenses for having a employee.)

So the average of 15 minute a hour watering works out to 91.25 hours a year. (365 X .25)
That means at the minimum that is $912.5 per year. That is a fair trade in my book for labor. If I figure my take home after expenses is $45 per hour to some one like me it is $4106.25 per year. Way with in my comfort zone to make the expenditure. The payback time frame is only 2 months for me.

By the way UPS makes it's money on keeping track of seconds to locate a package in the truck. With a average of 15 stops per hour 5 seconds per package makes a huge difference.

There is no "chance" of crop failure. It will either happen, or it won't, and if it does there is a cause which can be controlled and corrected. Plants don't die of heart attacks. If they are getting light, ventilation, nutes, and water, they just grow and grow.



Why would I need that? With proper use of fertilizer, good water, and good soil, cal/mag deficiencies simply don't happen. It's been years since I experienced any kind of nutrient deficiency.



Why would I need that? Wasps and other predators do the job without help, 24/7. A "predator nursery" attached and adjacent to the grow would give them a nest to keep the population going even if the pest population is not high enough to sustain them.

Otherwise, how difficult do you think it would be to set up an automated pesticide spraying system which unleashed the equivalent of a pyrethrum bomb every week or so? It could be tied in with the central controller which coordinates turning off the ventilation fans for the duration.

I look for solutions, not problems, because problems are everywhere you turn but I've never met one I couldn't solve.



I have a much better and dead nuts simple solution to this problem, which for good reason I'm not sharing.
