You don't really need to dig deep, I found all my critters within the first 1/2" of the top of the soil.

The pic I posted was soil taken from flower, the plants were not showing any distress so I'm fairly certain that the bugs were not harming them.

Do you have any pics of your effected plants? Root aphids should be much easier to find than what your describing, so you may be chasing ghosts.

Ya know thats good advice and if i read you giving it to someone else, i'd tell them to consider carefully what you are saying. And there was a time i considered it carefully. I then spent hours viewing the Aphids under a 30x loupe. At that magnification they are fairly easy to tell the difference between Root Aphids and other soil creatures like soil mites.
So yeah i am certain that the aphids are around. I never had them in the numbers that some folks post, but have always been able to find them in a pot with not much effort. Why not now? Well i have treated pretty heavy in veg for them, have used triazicide, met52, and bayer complete, and i believe their numbers to possibly not be too high, and i also really found these other bugs within the first five minutes of using the scope. On both occasions. Tomorrow i will be catching a video of the Aphids. Promise ;)

Anyone that's had the bastards knows that a few in a 5 gallon pot can easily decimate said plant... I have actually seen the same exact ones as in this pic, from what i can tell:

I am sure all these new critters are a result of the long war i have been waging with the aphids. My best guess, the met52 is being used at possibly too high a dose, cause fungus to grow like crazy in the coco, the worms are feeding on the fungus, and maybe the soil mites are eating an occassional worm and/or root aphid. and i want to get some more predators and throw them into the bug soup!

As for the coco being wet in the vid, its true i filmed one of those right after a watering. I do let them dry out between waterings as its helpful to keep Aphid numbers lower, but i can and will keep them even drier. Time to thirst some of those nematodes(?) to death!

why are you trying to kill the nematodes?
they will keep your fungus gnats in check....

as for root aphids....dunno..but I do know that there are thosands of species of springtails that look all different and are extemely hard to eliminate but do no harm either. In fact they keep the root zone clean....

just saying

Well at this point i don't know if they are nematodes or not. Secondly there are way more than would be in a healthy medium. Not sure if they are helping or hurting, but i can tell that the excessive numbers of them are pointing to imbalance.

"These guys could be keeping your real problems in check."

My real problems are not in check or i would have never noticed them. My roots are not furry and dont grow into new coco after a fresh transplant. Been doing the coco thing for nearly five years and know what a healthy plant does, and these girls ain't healthy. The above ground discoloration and lack of vigor is an obvious sign of imbalance. I sent a pic to an etymologist and hope they can give me more info. I'll post it here

Maybe they could be something else, but nematodes are not segmented. The critter in your video was not segmented.

Not all nematodes are beneficial. I just googled ; plant, nematode problems, and came back with a lot of hits. Some feed on roots.

Love the pictures.

Good luck with this.

Ive seen the same thing in my soil a few times, but always thought it was a fungus gnat larvae. As it was pointed out, this isn't a fungus gnat larvae.

My plant seem to suffering from something as they look deficient but dont respond to any flushing or feeding. Ive had lots of troubles in the last year so it it hard to tell if these worms are to blame or not. My plants are yellowing, droopy, purple stems and slow to drink.

I don't get how they would have got into my room, I clean and sterilize all the time and don't bring in anything from outside. If it was a fly larvae i would say, maybe one fly flew in when the door was open for a minute, but i can't understand how a nematode could get in. Maybe through the water, but i use RO now.

Anyways, here is a video i shot of the ones i have, they are very small and couldn't be spotted without a scope.

Also, I am looking for a nematicide, There doesnt seem to be many commercially available.

From wikipedia , "A nematicide is a type of chemical pesticide used to kill parasitic nematodes. One common nematicide is obtained from neem cake, the residue obtained after cold-pressing the fruit and kernels of the neem tree. Known by several names in the world, the tree was first cultivated in India in ancient times and is now widely distributed throughout the world. The root exudate of marigold (Tagetes) is also found to have nematicidal action. Nematophagous fungi, a type of carnivorous fungi, can be useful in controlling nematodes, Paecilomyces being one example."

I think Azamax is listed as a nematicide and is derived from neem.

Could also be Enchytraeid (sp) or potworm, funny right? They are beneficial and live in acidic environments rich in organic matter. Just a thought but I think most nematodes are smaller than your new pet worm "Steve" NS
