Self defense

Like my friend says: Self defense is everyone's PERSONAL responsibility.

Which basically means do not rely on anybody else other than yourself to protect you, your home and your loved ones. You might have a son in the army who did 3 tours and came back to stay with his folks, you might have strong well armed neighbors or good police service in your town, it is still your responsibility when it comes to self defense.

So, what say you? Do you believe that your home is your fortress? You have reinforced doors with many exotic locks, your windows bullet proof and a multi level basement hide out?

Or you leave your doors and windows open, have no access to any weapons in your home and dong give a shit who lives and visits your neighborhood?

A good example i have is Stalin. Back when he was in power. I saw once a documentary film showing what he did to his people. There was one big happy family living in some village somewhere in mid west Russia. Stalins worker, just one, came to their home first as a fellow and then turned onto them and drove the whole family into the ground, father of the family suffered the most and lost his life. It was terrible.

Now some spiritualists i know tell me not to obsess about WW2 and Stalin and 100s of cases acts of atrocities through out the history but i say you must not ignore it either.

My message is simple - be prepared, there never was and never will be time or place for weakness and ignorance.

weakness and ignorance isnt traits that breed easily, so they disspaear. that beeing said i live in a quiet village in switzerland, where the most comon crime in 2011 was urinating in public, and i am zero prepared, i leave the doors open to air out when i walk my dog, and the keys in the outside keyhole when i come home from a longer excursion. yet i feel totaly safe and nothing has ever happend here.
but i think i am mentaly prepared to go to any lengt to protect me, and my gf, and a few vital items.

And in all probability nothing will happen in your village.

But it is a gamble, there's a chance some thing might happen, do you want to be unprepared?

The first thing is your castle "must" be your fortress. It has to be physically impossible or very hard at the least for people to break in.
Burglar alarms are not much good because if the alarm goes off do you expect someone to come running and protect your home? Not likely, they will probable just say "I wish that damn alarm would stop ringing" so I can hear what they are saying on the television.
Cameras are good for an early warning system and for intelligence gathering; that is you know if someone has been checking out your house while you have been away, or if you are in bed you can see is someone is creeping around outside. In fact I would say they are a necessity. Just remember cameras outside a home are one of the things leo looks for in deciding whether a house is a grow house.
Then you need a weapon to defend yourself if someone does a home invasion, a shotgun has good stopping power, just remember especially at close quarters you have to aim it like a rifle, the shot doesn't spread as much as a lot of people beleive.
And an automatic is preferable because it there are multiple home invaders, which I think is usually the case, you may not have time to reload before they are on you.
And like with any weapon you need to train with it; no just practicing at the rifle range but practicing scenarios over and over again.
For example scenario 1. You hear someone trying to break down your front door. How quick can you grab your weapon and run to the area? And where exactly are you going to stand in the house to shoot from if needed? Be mindful that they might have guns too so you don't want to stand their in front of the door. Is their a corner you can use as cover as you cover the front door? Would it be better to crouch down behind the sofa and aim the gun at the door? Should you turn the lights off in the house? You want to have all this planned out and rehearsed beforehand, rather than running around in circles in indecision while they are breaking down the door, trying to decide what defensive position you are going to take.
And just make sure it's not leo breaking down the door; they might freak out if they break down the door and come charging in only to be confronted by you pointing a shotgun at them.

I have a number of alarm systems

Motion detection and video camera looking at the porch, in 3 and half years running i only had 2 episodes, one of them wasn't recorded and the other one - my camera was connected through a 8 meter USB cable and signal came out wacky and useless.

As for motion detector - inside my house in 3 years never yielded any fruit and was not needed, not that its a bad thing but still

avoiding trouble is fine. running can trigger the chase instinct. don't be Prey

What about the family?
My locks are just good enough by the time they break it they will have a gun in theyre face! Not a tough guy just willing to protect with deadly force if it is justified.

I've never really been put in the position that often. I do remember once incident very clearly, though, the one time I thought someone was going to really do me in.

El Cajon, some skeegy supermarket (best prices around, IIRC that's why I was there) in one of the seedier parts of EC. I'm walking back to my car with my groceries and this homeless man is staring at me. I don't think anything about it, maybe I have a booger hanging off my face or something.

Then he approaches, and he's clearly angry. Then he starts cursing me out loudly as he starts coming faster and faster at me. I began to back up and tried to put a car between us, next thing I know a group of teenagers comes flying out of a minivan and they're yelling at the homeless guy to get the fuck out of there. They just surrounded him and kind of herded him off, then one of them peeled off the group, comes over to me and asks if I'm alright, which I was, and then he helped me get the groceries in the car.

I guess this man was known to them, a regular, and he'd assaulted another woman who looked similar to me.

First and only time anything like that's ever happened to me. But! I have been bitten by more animals than I can count, so....?

How wary one is has a lot to do with one's surroundings. Where we live, house alarms and motion detectors would be complete overkill for the average criminal (but may be appropriate for police monitoring).

Either way, I am no runner, so I'm forced to hide or stand my ground. I can't fold up very well anymore, so I guess I've gotta stand my ground. Let's hope my flappin' gums save me!

I don't discuss my security measures in great detail anywhere but trust me they are there. I try to not make a habit of posting specific details where people with bad intentions might stumble across them and use the information to thier advantage. The best security measure I can think of though is to avoid advertising there is anything worth coming after. By that I mean try to avoid putting things a thief would be interested in, in a place where things can be easily seen from the outside.

In my opinion the best security is to appear to the thieves either as a total mystery or even better as someone who has nothing worth taking. In that situation your greatest threat is some random thief (usually a crackhead or the like) who just hits homes at random hoping to get lucky. This threat however can be reduced by location. If for example you live on a street full of homes relatively close together then the better locations are somewhere well into the street where a thief has to pass by many other homes and risk being spotted and have police alerted for suspicious behavior, before they ever get near your home. A random thief looking to get lucky is more apt to hit the extreme end of such a street for easier get away and to have at least one direction where he/she might go unnoticed. The more serious thieves that scout things out are handled by not putting your possessions on display as many do to impress their neighbors.

as to those 2 fags who rated my thread 1 star i hope someone comes crashing into your door in the middle of the night, then you will know what its like

Maybe it was the Stalin reference...doesn't really seem too relevant to anything...

Ah now I see why so many act negatively towards you, with an attitude like that it's no small wonder. Who the fuck cares how a thread is rated? Beides you? It means nothing, it's like reputation points. IT looks good and gives some recipients a warm fuzzy feeling but that and a dollar still won't buy you a decent cup of coffee.

Hey Hubble, since this thread doesn't seem to be going anywhere can I ask why your avatar is a 12 year old with a pot leaf?
