hey all was wondering what you all use for some of the things when you collect/scrape oil

doing a larger batch and i already have to much oil. I put it in a jar for now but am wondering how to handle it.

I was thinking about a Teflon bag or silicone. I have some small square silicone molds i was thinking about heating the oil up so its runny then pour into the molds and harden and then push out of the molds.

someone please tell me if this is a bad idea before i do it.

edit to say its already been double extracted/filtered and a pretty solid amber substance with just a slight tackyness

to me that seems like it would be one hell of a mess trying to get amber from a dish into small molds fast enough so it doesnt harden before in the molds. If its a ounce+ of amber then id just keep it in some small tapered mason jars like the 4 oz ones. when you want smaller pieces just break some off throw it on a piece of parchment paper or lil dabber dish.

Would be awsome if you could heat the material, and mold it into any shape you desire. The reasons why you want to do this, is obvious. Then the possibilities are endless!

i keep it as medical as possible....glass and stainless only. i don't use teflon for anything.

you might consider parchment paper rather then teflon. much healthier.

the teflon has been worked out and its legit
https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=50302&page=4

foaf sums it up
Besides being nonstick, as mentioned, the Teflon® is chemically resistant to butane and alcohol, so the mystery chemicals that might leech from otherwise resistant plastics aren't a problem. And as mentioned, the poisons from burnt Teflon® aren't a known problem if you don't burn it. I cook eggs on Teflon® for my kids. If you didn't feel safe cooking on Teflon, then you should probably avoid it just on your religous principle.

so other wise everyone's vote is to keep it in a jar?

I keep mine in blue glass, because its condition changes significantly with temperature and UV degrades it.

Transport could be an issue with molded forms, whether there is universal agreement on Teflon's salubriousness, or not.

Is there a difference between blue glass and amber glass in terms of UV protection?

your statement seems to indicate blue glass has special heat deflecting properties.

Actually blue glass reflects ultraviolet rays, which is why it looks blue to us.

Amber is probably cooler, as it reflects the near infra red, there by appearing amber.

i thought your statement covered two bases in the way it was put up, talking about temperature, and ray protection, it looked like blue glass was a refrigerator.

I was totally thinking of doing the silicone mold thing. Make little amber bears or cars, basically any candy mold.

I keep ~ a gram in each of my dishes, and the bulk of the oil gets folded in parchment paper, and put into my little oil album. It's just a miniature photo album, but with no photos...just oil... muahahaha.

I know you run with the SkunkPharm crew, so I am curious as to if there is any teflon involved in the pump driven butane recovery system y'all rock.

I don't use teflon for cooking either (SS and Cast Iron for stovetop, Glassware for baking), however, butane vapor/liquid traveling through teflon at a low temperature does not scare me one bit. I have used a Tami quite a bit, and for those of you who don't know, the recovery line is in fact made of teflon. It's technical title is

Teflon Core Caustic Chemical Rated High Pressure Braided Stainless Steel Reinforced Recovery Line

So, with that being said, I still don't plan on storing my oil in teflon dishes any time soon, but from a chemical engineering standpoint, I do not see a problem with it.

I make molds with this seaweed base material that dentists use. Its deemed safe for people. The reason I use it is because it dries quick, gets alot of detail, and shoots out of a cool little gun.

To dig up an old thread.. Use 2 artists palette knifes for scraping your oil from the pyrex..Get a whole bunch to try from an artists shop, they are used for mixing oil paints. Get the Chinese cheapies and get different sizes and shapes to try. Its easy to handle the oil when its warm from a double boiler this way. Just use the flat edge to get a big dollup and scrape onto the other knife and drip into jar to store. The small, 30 ml (i'm guessing), jamjars about an inch high are perfect. You can store 25 ml in one with no problems and they are easy to use out of..

For dispensing and wiping on the inside of a rizla or dropping drops onto bongs/screens etc. get a brass welding rod and make an oil tool, snip a piece a piece a few, 3 or 4, inches long. Beat a small knob (like twice as wide as the rod) on the one end for stomping your joints down and beat the other end flat like a paddle for half an inch or so. Make the paddle abou 3 to 4 mm wide and bend a nice curve into it so the tip faces almost 60 degrees or more away. This is for scooping oil and wiping onto papers or dropping. Now polish the paddle and curve to a very high degree with finest wet sandpaper and buffing compound or similar method, it must have no blemish.
To use the tool, scoop a blob of oil on the tip and hold the tool horizontally with the curve (and small blob on the end) curving upwards now hold your lighter about a cm away from the start of the curve just over an inch from the blob, away from it so the heat will not affect it. Light a flame and hold it so the top of the flame is about a cm below the rod, this will ensure deposits are not left on the rod and also use clean lighter gas in your clipper or similar quality cheapo refillable lighter. Now, have your bowl packed already, your paper ready, or toasted tobacco for a chillum waiting so that you can do this and not be rushed or in a squeeze looking for something when the oil is hot..anyway..
You've held a flame for a second or 2, the heat travels upwards up the curve of the brass quickly, you are watching and waiting and ready for the oil to turn to liquid and start to slide down. As this starts to happen, rotate the rod 180 degrees so the curve faces downwards. The oil will drop in a neat drop on top your bowl or screen or mix or whatever and if you polished properly it will hardly leave a trace on the rod's curving paddle. If you want a rizla dosed, then just repeat as above and when oil goes liquid then take the rod and wipe a rizla layed flat on a clean surface. The oil will bead in the hook of the warm curve leaving a smooth clean line. It is best to apply the line for only the first half or 2/3 of the paper to prevent the second half of the joint clogging as the oil runs down anyway..
Also for long term storage of your oils, keep it in the deepfreeze. It will be good for years.
Hope that'l still help if a bit late..

I keep my big batches of oil in airtight glass jars, easy to poke out with a dabber or knife, and I also have a parchment paper erl o dex I keep in the freezer, as I have dogs and don't want hair in my stuff, I keep all my "meds" in a large cool dark cabinet, so the light and heat doesn't degrade my meds. I have all kinds of different dabbers, from ss ones that DM cuts for me in the garage, to nice glass and pyrex ones, and little ss thin rods with decorative tops. I think I'm wandering off subject....
